He was the wall that others had to break down to get at the crystals, so he really didn't have much to do outside of watching the rest of them fight.

They were the ones that created them through the agency of their scientists. They were the ones to blame when they could not - or would not - find ways to heal them.
"I would suggest that the Moogle in question used the Crystal to awaken the potential inside all of us, for was it also the others who found themselves struggling against something they had feared? We were chosen Heroes because each of us could potential become Villains if we become twisted in our purposes. Isn't that what Angeal would say? That we are Heroes only to fight monsters worse than us?"
