[With the way Cloud had braced his magitek armor he has no way to evade the oncoming Chocobo Knight. He braces himself as the assault hits his mech, gouging talonmarks and beak blows into the plating. At least being inside the thing protects him from the worst of it but he's definitely going to need a mechanic later. Gareth's followup sends the suit reeling back a step but it keeps standing.
Cloud's eyes go wide with shock as Jack falls in front of him. His own mech is damaged from the ensuing attacks but the Curaga cast on him at least has the effect of stabilizing it even if repairs will need to be performed later. At least he's ready if he has to leap out and rejoin the fight.
But for now his focus narrows. They knew this fight would be tough, but they also felt it necessary. But the idea that they may perhaps have a victory with fewer than when they started...He's not ready to accept that. He understands the stakes they face with this world and they may not all survive, but he can still want for everyone to live.
If this battle ends now, maybe we can save him. That's the thought racing through his mind. The others have the spells, the phoenix downs that might be able to help him. All Cloud can do is focus and try to end the fight as quickly as possible. This is the path he's chosen. The way he's decided to be of best use to the Heroes and to Crystallis.
