A Month in the Life of Jaune
This is the worst.
[Jaune’s voice cracks as he complains to the empty room. Three days he had been laid up with the flu. Fever, aches, a runny nose, a cough like he’d never had. His optimism that it will end soon is wearing thin at this point – if anything, it’s getting worse, since that cough hadn’t been there yesterday. At least, he thinks it was yesterday. The days kind of blend together when you sleep all day. He coughs miserably then grabs a tissue and blows his nose before tossing it weakly in the general direction of the trash can with the rest, not caring if it goes in or not.
It’s the first time he’s been sick and his mom hasn’t been there to take care of him, too, which really isn’t helping. She always made sure he had plenty of soup and tea. And while he could go out into the kitchen and raid the place for some, he’s really comfy and it’s just so much work right now. His moogle was… trying, he supposed, but it was clear he had no idea how to care for a sick human. He had considered calling his housemates, but Chrom and Donny always seemed so busy and Pyrrha… well, things were still weird between the two of them. Besides it wasn’t like he is actually dying, despite how it feels. He’ll get through this. It’s already been three days. It’ll pass soon, right?
He coughs again and has to sit up and bend over due to the force of it before flopping back down with a moan and curling back up.He sees Pumpkin Pete fly off, muttering something about getting someone because moogle medicine didn't seem to be working.]

Back Amongst the Living
[It’s been a week (he thinks) since he’s been out and about – the flu really did a number on him. But now that he’s all better, he’s going to enjoy some fresh air, something he never knew he missed, and grab some groceries for the house while he’s out. He takes his time going there, though, enjoying the weather and the people around him. He’s not really looking at anything in particular, oblivious to his surroundings as he strolls down the street.]

Never a Dull Moment
[Jaune’s really didn't know how he got himself in these situations. He was minding his own business, taking a walk in the park, and the next he was being chased by a chocobo. He didn't even know what he did wrong. He had given it a pat on the beak as he passed by it, and it squawked and tried to bite him. So he booked it. And it gave chase.
To anyone else, it was probably a comedic sight, the teen running frantically and crying apologies for the unknown grievance. Jaune, though, was in trouble. The chocobo was much faster than him, and any second it would catch up to him. He looked around frantically for some sort of haven. A box, a pipe, anything would do. He nearly cried in relief when he saw an easily climbable tree. He scrambled up to safety, just barely avoiding getting his ankles nibbled and continued to cry at the beast.]
I'm sorry, okay! Now go away! Please?
Re: Never a dull moment, indeed
"Well, I've been here a while," Kaji tries to explain. "Most of us have a bird of our own as a partner. They're really effective transportation..."
"...but, yeah, they can be a little temperamental."
Pen-Pen trots back over to Kaji's side, looks up at Jaune and quacks once.
Kaji stubs out his cigarette and offers his hand to Jaune. "Ryoji Kaji. But, everybody just uses my last name. And this is Pen-Pen."
Re: Never a dull moment, indeed
Keep telling yourself that, Jaune."Jaune Arc," he replies, shaking Kaji's hand. He looks over at Pen-Pen, frowning as he tries to work something out.
"Do I shake its hand too?"
Re: Never a dull moment, indeed
Kaji laughs. "Well, since he helped save your butt, I'd say at least a thank you is in order." Qwak? Kaji slightly tilts his head towards the penguin. "No, I dont think he's old enough to buy you a beer." Qwaaak.
"How long have you been here?" Kaji's voice turns to gentle concern. "We used to have a way to predict when new Heroes would arrive, but the clock ran out on it." He shrugs and holds his hands out to the sides. "We're flying blind at the moment."

Focus, Jaune.
"Right. Um. Thanks, Pen-Pen." Thanking a penguin. Things he never thought he would do.
He crossed his arms, trying to think of when he woke up in the hospital. "Hmmm... Maybe two months ago? It was right before the holidays."

"Ah." Kaji grins. "Well, congratulations for getting here just in time for everything to be going to hell. Um, we're working on it." He laughs and shakes his head, trying to show the kid that he's joking.
"In seriousness, though. Do you think you need any help, getting caught up with the rest of us? It's rather not fair that the Rift or whatever is actually doing this is still bringing people here." All of the Heroes want to fight, but some, for example, haven't gotten their powers back from home, or cant get the approximation of them that comes from the Custom Jobs.

"Thanks, I think?" Really, it was just his luck that he'd show up right before all hell was about to break loose.
"Yeah, actually. Everyone keeps saying 'we need to make a plan' and 'what are we going to do?' but no one's told me what's actually going on here." Getting sick for that past few weeks didn't really help much, either.
Despite popular belief, Jaune was good with strategy - there was a reason he was made team leader, after all. "I'd like to help but I can't if no one fills me in."

It's a little slow-going because they have to let the penguin keep up, but they are headed towards the Heroes' Observatory. "I sort of took over as record-keeper, the Lady Ashelia had been handling it so well for so long, and then Zelda took over. Someone has to keep the flow of information going. No matter how mundane that information is."
Kaji holds up two fingers. "There are two primary things that we have to deal with. One is technical, the upgrading of the Soul Divider, a piece of technology that, it turns out, sorts the spiritual energy of those who die on this planet. It got changed to sort the spiritual energy of other worlds, too, and that's how this whole mess got started. Killing our worlds and then using the spiritual energy through the Soul Divider to revitalize this world."
"The other is to go curbstomp the one person who would do anything to stop us, to make sure that the world cycles through again: Garland. He hasn't been accessible for a while. The crystalization started out right on his back door, and he didn't leave his city. But, right when we defeated the creature guarding the Soul Divider? Hey-hey, guess what, the crystal receeded and we can get to him again."
Maybe the most blase and casual of situation reports, but it's what Kaji is here for. He tilts his head at Jaune, and there is even a little smirk on his face while looking for the kid's reaction. "Questions? Comments?"
no subject
"Uhhhh." Definitely not the most intelligible sound, but he has to think all of it over for a moment.
"Okay," he starts slowly, gaining momentum as he goes. "So, I'm not an engineer or really even that tech savvy" - he fights with a sword in a world filled with guns and airships, after all - "so I really can't do much about that part. But the other part. This Garland guy. If we can get to him now, why haven't we? What's stopping us?"
Because it seems to him that the heroes vastly outnumbered him.
