Re: The Killer Of Worlds || ??????????????????

Jack’s eyes light up, and he looks at Parasraya, no, Kalki as if seeing her for the first time. She’s been here all along. A slow smile spreads across his face, greeting an old friend, and his voice can’t get above a whisper for a second. “I had hoped. That you were still alive.”

But this means he needs to act swiftly. He is quickly shaken from his stupor, remembering that they are not alone. If anything, he steps closer to Kalki, trusting in his Crystal Shield ability to absorb any attacks that he can intercept on her behalf. The look on his face turns pained, sympathetic, and his tone turns grave. He starts speaking very quickly. “They are going to kill you, and I know I can’t stop them all. Wade won’t hesitate to cut through me to get to you.”

But some things are more important. And if standing here and asking these questions means that he gets killed by his fellow Heroes for it, then so be it.

“Can you ever forgive me for what I did to you? It was my fault, my recklessness in trying to fix the Crystal of Fire all myself, that sent you into it. I know you think it was Fate, it would have always happened that way. But I can still be sorry that you went through what you did. What turned you from that woman into this one. What showed you that despair. It was because of me.” Jack’s free hand is shaking, as he is admitting all the regret and fear that he hasn’t been able to explain properly to the other Heroes. The truths he has to say cut far too deep to the bone, it shows a vulnerability that he has only rarely shown to his allies, but she is the only one who would understand it.

“But I would also beg you to reconsider your plan. I know what an existence beyond life and death is.” His hand goes to his chest. “I am that existence!” His head shakes slightly, “And I wouldn’t wish this on anyone.” He can hold steady to Kalki’s gaze, but to no one else’s. He has to ignore that the others are still here. “You know that same truth that I do, that there is nothing else out there. Beyond life, there is just the cold and the dark and nothing.” The last word is hissed out through gritted teeth. It’s Jack’s greatest fear, his greatest secret, the one he can’t let the Doctor know, how much he actually suffers every time he dies, knowing something that no one living is supposed to know. “But I use that knowledge to cling to this existence as hard as I can. To hold on to everyone’s lives as much as I can. Because it’s all we have. And I can only beg you to do the same.”

It’s all Jack has. It’s all he is. This is the best argument he can give. The confession, the knowledge that there is less separating him from Kalki than others might imagine. He still truly believes that this confrontation is going to end in her death, no matter what. He can’t save her life. The Heroes will kill her. Yuna should kill her. But can he save her from making the worst mistake she possibly could?
