Awakening

WHO: Asch the Bloody, Flynn Scifo, Natalia L.K. Lanvaldear, Yuri Lowell
WHAT: A bunch of Tales characters wake up in the Misery Mire. It's going to be awful. And wonderful. But mostly awful.
WHEN: Five Years Later...
WHERE: Misery Mire (Center), Ghost City of Aqures Ixen

"...eeeeeeeexxxxxxx!"

The voice was small. Distant. Natalia couldn't tell if the source was far away or if her ears were simply stuffed with cotton. She stirred, lashes trembling before they slowly parted. "...mmm...what...?"

"..teeeeeeeeexxxxxx!"
"...moooooooooooo..."

Again that terrified voice, aching with desperation. But there was something else out there too. A miserable lowing. What was that?

Her fingers twitched, strength slowly flowing back into her stiff body. The earth was a wet squelch under her palm, and she braced her shaking arms beneath her to push herself up. Sticky strings of mud and filth clung to the front of her white mage's robes, spattering wetly back into the swampy earth. She sat up and looked around her, blinking hard. Strange...her cheek had been lying on something warm, and wasn't dirty at all. Her bleary eyes swam to the colored form in front of her. A body? She'd been sleeping on a body?!

No...he was alive. The blond man's chest rose and fell, as if trapped in a very deep sleep. Natalia shook her head, trying to clear it. "Where...what happened...?" And was that her hair? It was so long and thick and wavy. ...And dirty...

"ARRRRRRRRRTEEEEEEEEEEEXXXXXXXXXX!"

There was no mistaking the urgency of that scream now. Natalia's head whipped around to see a gangly young teenager, hair plastered to his dirty face as he seized hold of a bridle, tugging with all his might. At the other end of the bridle was a mud-spattered and disconsolate cow, half-sunk into the mud, and sinking further.

"Moo-hoo!" it seemed to sob.

"No! Artex, don't be sad! If you do you'll sink and die! Don't give up hope! ARRRTEEEEEXXXXX!"

The boy, himself, was sunk up to his knees. And sinking fast.

This was no time to lie around disoriented. Natalia staggered to her feet, her quiver of arrows clattering noisily with the sudden motion. She didn't know where her bow was, but she didn't need it right now. She had to help that boy! The princess lurched toward him, and tripped over someone's legs. No, not just one person, two people, lying in a heap...

"Asch?! Yuri?!" They were okay...! No, now wasn't a good time to rejoice, someone was in trouble. And that meant she didn't have a minute to spare to wake them up gently. Pulling a muddy clump of moss from the front of her robes, she tore it in half and flung the sodden mass at each of their faces. "Wake up! Someone is in trouble!"

Whether they did or not, she wasn't going to wait. She was already tearing a slimy vine off of a tree that was half-uprooted, and dragging it over the ground as she ran toward the screaming boy and his depressed cow friend.
