Kenshin woke up looking at what he was relatively sure was Aang's butt.

Well, it sure looked like Aang's butt. Kenshin admitted he'd never had or sought a chance to study it in detail - goodness no! - but it definitely seemed to go along with his memory of the young Avatar desperately trying to use his airbending skills to break their fall as the airship went down. Which Kenshin would have immediately thanked him for with an appreciative smile as he regained consciousness, if his head hadn't been thundering in agony. "Mmf..." Kenshin rose slowly, pushing off his palms on what felt like - and what his bleary eyes confirmed to be - scorched and salted earth. It was terribly hot, and the sweat clinging to his body seemed to weigh on him like armor as he forced himself to sit. That must have been some fall.

His eyes focused slowly. When he saw the sky, Kenshin almost wished they hadn't.

They were four, himself, the young Avatar, and two others he knew from the ship but had not yet met, Aoi and Akane. And they...had come to a landscape ripped out of some awful nightmare. The sky above them was red, sullen, and angry like a wound stricken with infection. It was not an easy sky to look at. The earth below him occasionally grumbled with tremors, and Kenshin saw they were surrounded by what looked to be the slopes of a massive and furious volcanic mountain. The few clouds above them were bruised with smoke. Even the air seemed to smolder in his lungs when he tried to breathe it.

Kenshin narrowed his eyes and ran a hand through his hair, and was at once shocked to find it so thick. His own hair had grown out heavily, a long and wild scarlet carpet that reached nearly to his hamstrings. He blinked - this was not a few days' growth at all. And when he saw that the young Avatar was no longer clean-shaven, and in fact looked like his scalp and cheeks hadn't known the touch of a razor in weeks, months, years -

Oh.

Kenshin squeezed his sword hand into a fist at his side, and immediately felt the difference. Oh.

"This one is afraid," he said to the others slowly, sadly, "that we have...not been merely napping. Is everyone all right?"
