Sephiroth took that role more seriously than most; if he'd died in the process of defending the city then so much the better for having completed his job to the best of his ability before he had fallen. Never mind that he would be back to fight another day. To have chased after the enemy, only to have had to quickly find an escape had for a few days made him question how far that blind loyalty should go. He had plenty of time to think about it, alone in the desert for so long.
Despite the slight waver over the topic of captured Heroes, as Sephiroth listened to Ramza for the most part he felt a great warmth stirring in his core again. His battered pride swelled significantly to hear someone else speak so well of him, and his gaze eventually came to rest on the small medal that he'd been awarded - sat as it was on the bedside. Ramza was right of course. He needed to stop making himself feel so sorry for himself - yet he knew he was capable of far better.
"I'm no stronger than the next hero who has been here since the beginning." He commented, carefully not trying to sound as if he wasn't appreciative of Ramza's boost to his ego. The brief smile dropped and he leveled his gaze then directly at his broken leg which was elevated. "And just as fragile."
It was a very bitter pill to swallow, the fact that he wasn't half as resistant to damage, nor half as quick to heal the same as Sephiroth felt still that he should be even though he'd many months to adjust to not being. Then again, there had never been a battle for him to have really pushed his limitations with until now. The Night of the 13 Moogles didn't count.
