His hand felt warm… and it resembled the same tepid sensation resonating inside his chest. Was it nothing more than physical temperature, or…? He couldn’t be certain. He hadn’t experienced this emotion often enough to truly decipher it. Even then, the previous instance he could recall was… His facial features hardened, briefly, as he was helpfully reminded of the loose ends that he left untied. Like the red string Sai had been so insistent on keeping, even after they finally released each other, on the island of dinosaurs.
Popular? Gaara wanted to scoff in disbelief, but settled for a simple headshake. Others may come to need him for his healing abilities, but that was all. Of course, he would be willing to assist anyone that received injuries. It didn’t mean their bond would extend beyond the duration of battle.
“You possess a healing spell as well,” he reminded Luke, “in addition to your other abilities. Even if your extent is mid-tier at best, the elemental advantage should not be discounted. You are a much more useful ally, simply due to versatility.”
It didn’t matter that Luke might not be as powerful as a warrior that specialized in a specific area. Cooperation was a key factor in their new circumstances. Wherever they lacked in strength, they could form an alliance with someone to fill that void. When Luke mentioned having faith in his abilities, however… Gaara carefully avoided his gaze. He was formidable with his sand, but in this new world, having been stripped of that capability… He didn’t want to tell Luke how much weaker he had become. Particularly with regards to his aptitude in physical combat.
“Yes… we should,” he agreed with ease, “I intend to begin immediately… after conducting a thorough search of this city. Perhaps we could mutually benefit from training together.”
At the sudden reminder of the reason behind his search, a shadow passed over his expression. “I will keep your friends in mind as well, Luke.” He remembered, quite vividly, the physical appearances of Tear, Jade, and Guy. It was Anise and Natalia that he had never become acquainted with.
Meanwhile, his Moogle companion was looking at both of them from where she sat, with Ion. She was curious about why they were still holding hands, and made a mental note to ask Gaara, once they met up again. If that was something friends did, could she and Ion hold each other’s paws while they were walking along? Maybe even flying, if they were close enough? Something interesting to ponder over…
“Thank you! Kupo!” She tipped her head down toward his paw and lapped up the small bunch of cotton candy he had just pulled off. At least this time, she didn’t get it on her face. After the sugary substance had melted in her mouth, she brushed the cotton candy over Ion’s nose with a playful giggle.
