Preparing for things to come.
Where: Aqures Ixen
When: June 29th – July 5th
Summary: Zelda isn’t one for war but she’s going to start practicing and thinking of strategies. She knows that there will be a meeting but she doesn’t want to attend empty handed. She is also on a look out for new heroes. It’s a bad time for them to show up which makes her think that they will.
Warning: None.
Zelda was always busy and with the threat of war she was even busier. She was coming up with plans using the city map as a guide. It would be better to use the cities natural strengths during the fight, such as preexisting walls, but it’s clear that this city wasn’t made to withstand a war. The best they could do was guess where the Empire might focus their attention and so Zelda made a list.
1.) Jessie’s Lab
2.) The Hospital
3.) The Fire Crystal
4.) The Castle
5.) The Old Observatory
6.)The old Magitek Research Facility
7.) Mognet Office
8.) Airship Port
There were other possible areas too but she didn’t think they’d attack schools or homes. They couldn’t chance leaving areas unprotected but she supposed they could put a concentration of people around specific points. There were a few locations that worried her more than others. She didn’t know if they should move the heroes in stasis or if they should focus around the crystal of fire. It would really help if they knew what the Empire was after.
She worked late into the evening, pouring over notes and making scribbles and plans on small pieces of paper.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
She was planning to fight and while her skills lay primarily in wit she wasn’t a stranger to brute strength. She thought of changing her jobs back to the skills she had mastered but she knew that Link wouldn’t want her on the front lines. Instead she practiced with the bow that he had made for her: aiming, firing, and then fetching the five arrows she was using for practice.
Zelda could be found practicing in a few places. Right outside the town was the most common. She could aim at trees or things around her without the possibly of hitting a foolish passerby. She could also be found right outside the Observatory, pass the garden that she had create and along the back of the building. She set up a small firing range with a few straw looking dummies at the opposite end. They weren’t perfect but they let her practice without destroying any arrows.
She could also be found using her illusionist skills such as duplicating herself. This would be the easiest way for her to help from afar and she hoped that she could think of ways to use these skills in a larger scale battle. She couldn’t help but wonder how well the Heroes of Light would ban together. She remembered the first time they all fought. It was in the Chocobo Ranch and it hadn’t gone very well at all but since then people have grown and changed. New heroes have arrived and they found a purpose.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Along with everything else Zelda was on the look out to see if new heroes would arrive. This was a constant duty that she gave herself but with war looming she decided to keep her eyes and ears out more so. It would be a perfectly awful time for the heroes to awake which made her think that they would. She also had no idea where they would show up which weighed heavily on her thoughts.

Observatory 30th June
"Hard at work, as ever. Always seems to be the way."
Sephiroth straightened himself up, getting used to the weight of his pack again. The handle of Masamune which stuck out almost a whole foot over his head to one side bobbed with the motion but then settled. The Observatory was the last place he wanted to check in before departing again for the airport. He was trying not to think of 'this might be the last time for a while' but it was difficult to chase the pessimism from his thoughts. There seemed to be a great deal of the others intent on staying behind when they would be safer leaving; it was lost on Sephiroth how any of them could be so foolish.
He knew first hand of the might the Empire had; they should be leaving the fighting to the soldiers who knew what they were doing.
Observatory 30th June
"There's always a lot to do." Her eyes glanced over his pack and her smile softened. "I suppose your heading back to Esdham." Knowing he would soon be gone worried her some but she was happy that he stopped by. It's been awhile since she's been able to see him face to face and talk.
Zelda slowly lowered her bow and walked over to a small wooden bench that held a glass of water and spar arrows. Her hair was tied back in a tight ponytail that still trailed well pass her waist. There was a white towel on her shoulder and a wrist guard on her left arm. She wore a light blue summer dress which would do nothing in a fight but it helped keep her from over heating while she practiced. The days were only getting hotter as the peek of summer approached.
"It's good to know you will be leading some of the soldiers."
Observatory 30th June
Yet here he was, about to go away again for an indeterminate amount of time.
"I know the feeling." He commented as she lowered her weapon and also approached the table nearby. With a quick nod he acknowledged her question but really, Zelda knew well already that it was probably a given at this point. Sephiroth still wasn't sure how he felt about it, but at least on the surface -and perhaps a little deeper than he liked to admit- he had made his choice.
"I might well be, should my promotion go through. It might have been premature, but when we got word of what was coming-"
Zelda's decidedly summery attire drew attention to how warm it really was; even though he wore a grey vest to keep his upper body cool, all of his hair was brought forward across a shoulder so it wouldn't get caught between his back and the pack he wore. Though immaculate and shiny-clean always, plus longer again as it had been when he'd first arrived, it quickly got very warm against whatever skin it rested against. In hindsight, by the end of the day Sephiroth would probably scold himself for not putting it up. Coupled with his leather habit it was a wonder he hadn't melted.
"-I had to make the choice."
He didn't sound completely convinced, all said, almost as if his hand had been forced a little.
Observatory 30th June
She placed the container down before turning to face Sephiroth. She slowly slipped the arm guard off her forearm and onto the bench before wiping off her hands and arms with a small towel.
"You don't sound to sure."
She wasn't going to tell him what to think or what decisions to make. She thought his actions were admirable and his efforts have shown that they could make a difference. He was doing it in his own way, a way he knew best but she also knew that he had been in crystal stasis for a week and things were bound to change since then.
Zelda's head tiled to the side curiously asking the obvious question with body language instead of words.
Observatory 30th June
"When I came back-" He started but then trailed off, not feeling like he needed to inform Zelda of all the details behind what he now remembered which he simply hadn't before.
"-I felt unsure of returning to serve. I found myself feeling weary of being used as a weapon in someone else's war." A careful breath was taken and Sephiroth carefully lowered himself onto the end of the bench. The pack rested behind him on the seat, taking the weight from his back and shoulders for the time being.
"I went back, just to get the lay of the land and make a decision but now it seems I've been swept along anyway. I hoped at least to be able to come and catch up with you, before something else happened but it seems we won't get that chance now."
Observatory 30th June
She picked up the container of water and offered it to Sephiroth. It would be sharing but she could tell that he might want a drink as well. Even in the shade of the observatory she could feel the intensity of the summer heat. "If you question the commands you are given, think and be sharp, then you will never be used by others." It wasn't a comforting statement but a fact that Zelda truly believed.
"There will be time to catch up and I will make sure to send you letters. Even if you can't reply. At least you will know what's going on here." She was proud of him for moving forward and that feeling grew knowing that he had chosen his path carefully.
Observatory 30th June
Sephiroth looked over Zelda curiously as she offered yet more advise. He nodded politely but deep inside he knew that he knew that already. He'd spent much of the last year of his life before Crystallis questioning, reading between the lines, outright refusing certain assignments. The crushing fact was though, that those same reactions of his had likely been taken into account in order to move the project in the direction desired. A sharp, uncomfortable stab of hatred hit the bottom of his gut; it was a relatively new sensation for him, where before he wouldn't have let it bother him. The great machinations of the Science Department. Well, before he'd learned of the events his future would hold.
"I suppose that it's too much to think that you'll be getting yourself safely evacuated."
Observatory 30th June
Zelda's expression shifted at his comment. Her lips curled into something that approached a frown. "I'm sorry but I will be staying." She couldn't leave now. She had promised to keep an eye on the observatory and she wasn't one to break a promise.
She had already begun arranging for things to be taken from the city, such as papers, notes and the job crystals that they had collected but there were still things here she wanted to protect. "I will be safe." There was so much to go into planning and preparations and she knew her skills would be useful here.
Observatory 30th June
As it was, he felt more satisfied with his eventual choice to come and see Zelda, the longer that he remained in her company. She always did have a natural effect like that.
The way that her expression changed in reaction to his comment told it all before she even opened her mouth to answer it. Sephiroth had suspected as much, no matter how he did feel that the safest option for all of the others would be to get away as far as possible before the hammer came down. There would always be those who could contribute, but he felt that to lose an individual like Zelda to such circumstances would hinder in the long run rather than help. Naturally, forever the pessimist.
Not only that, he wouldn't be able to ensure her safety while following whatever orders might be issued. A conflict of interest, indeed. Still, she'd been here as long as he had, logic told him she might well therefore be strong enough to hold the fort. Not by herself, he figured, but there were a lot of Heroes now.
"I have no doubt that you won't do your utmost to ensure the safety of what you've all built here. My concern lies in what I know of the Imperial war machine. Please, try to urge those you know who refuse to leave, not to do anything foolish."
Observatory 30th June
There were those she would insist leave the city but no matter what happened it wouldn’t be a perfect solution. Those who stayed would distract each other if their friends were hurt or in danger. There was the real possibility that they would truly die in this fight and yet that didn’t matter because Zelda had made up her mind.
“I will. I am hoping to think of plans that will not put the heroes in a situation where they might sustain that sort of harm.” It was war; she knew people would get hurt. “We will use what we have to fight and hopefully have the advantage since they are coming here. We know the city pretty well now and hopefully we’ve circumvented some of their plans with the advanced warning.”
She paused feeling a little uneasy. “I wish we knew what their target was.” If it was the heroes then none of them would be safe; no matter where they fled.
Zelda was also still collecting notes about the dreams, memories and the happenings around them though she had already spoke with another hero about taking them out of the city so that they’d be safe. She didn’t want anything to fall into the Empire’s hands that might hurt them in the future.
Observatory 30th June
He could guarantee his own safety, at least as far as was reasonably possible, but when other heroes did what other heroes would inevitably do in the name of friendship...it reminded him strongly of the reasons for his own solitary nature. Didn't need that clouding his judgment.
"As do we all. There might be something to be said for the fact that this is home territory, but when the time comes to be briefed we'll know a few more specific details I should think. It will be important to keep an eye on the larger picture as well, in order to get some idea what their overall goal or target is. If Biggs is to be believed, this attack doesn't make any sense."
If there were one thing Sephiroth could talk about at length, it would be military tactics and those things that were important to ensure a victory in battle. Never mind that this time, his role as part of a larger force would be crucial - he wouldn't be able to shoulder it all alone. Many differences between this world and his own.
"The last thing we need is to be wiped out here."
Observatory 30th June
“I fear that the heroes of light are the targets and if that is the case…” It would mean they would have to rethink their approach. They don’t want to give the Empire what they want. Zelda hoped to move those in crystal stasis as well as remove anything in the city that might tempt the Empire. That didn’t mean that what they were searching for or their goal wouldn’t still be available to them. “The Empire has reasons for everything that it does.”
She wondered if they blamed the heroes of light for the calamity. If the reason they haven’t evacuated was because they thought that the hero’s demise would stop the crystals growth and safe Crystallis. She knew that the Empire had been mounting for war prior to the hero’s arrival but she also knew that they would use them the heroes of light any way it could to further their goals.
“Is there any way to determine what they are after? It’s too dangerous to send someone in for intel now.” They were bound to be on alert with their upcoming plans.
Observatory 30th June
Technologically they were far ahead of the Aqurean Kingdom, and undoubtedly that extended into their arsenal as well. Had they not had a taste enough before, when Kalki had ordered them to sack Esdham last time? That had been only to attempt to capture a handful of them, and to do away with the President there...and now it seemed they might be coming to crush any and all Heroes of Light that they might come across. The scale of their goal was incomparably broader this time, and left a wide scope for the amount of damage they might cause to the City carrying it out.
"Part of me wonders if Garland knows that a few of us were taken away to that other place...before. That girl said..." Sephiroth leveled eyes at the container with the water, where it rested on the table rather than meeting Zelda's gaze with his own as he gathered his thoughts. They were back to reflecting his mako infusion, an afterglow that might last weeks to come yet.
"...that he couldn't see us there."
Observatory 30th June
Her gaze studied Sephiroth's features though it wasn't intrusive. It was curious but expecting. She knew the name and the lore of the man that carried it but she hadn't heard of him in the context of the other heroes. She knew a little of the avatars, or Kalki and the young girl but it wasn't enough to form theories or thoughts.
"He might know more than we do." She paused gathering her thoughts. "It seems the Empire is always a step ahead of it in most regards. It would make sense if he could see us."
Zelda continued to watch him wondering what memories kept his eyes glued to the container that she had filled with water. She didn't want to break his gaze so she left the container in place as a distraction. "How do you think he's able to see us?"
Observatory 30th June
A few beats later Sephiroth thought he had enough of a handle on his thoughts so he wouldn't show them so much on his face. Though, perhaps it might have been a foolish attempt to hide them from Zelda who had known him for a a long time by now; it was a little obvious it were hurting more than he'd admit, just to cast his mind back to those details. The sting of relevance was never far behind them.
He hadn't understood, and then she had shown him.
"The guardian of 'Crystallis and Life'...I'm not sure I want to know exactly who...or what manner of creature that girl is."
Observatory 30th June
"I will look into it." Which she hoped would be comforting and lift a weight from the heroes shoulders. Zelda smiled up at Sephiroth taking a small sip of water before continuing.
That girl was created by the heroes of the past, according to her. Zelda wondered what it could all mean. "I've been collecting information about the memories from the other heroes as well. If I learn more I will make sure to inform you and the others." She assumed that he knew whom she was talking about. There were a lot of heroes but a few of them had been working together to try and find out more.
Observatory 30th June
Sephiroth watched her, idly, while Zelda took a sip of water but averted his gaze away before he might appear to be rudely staring. He felt more than a little detached again, just thinking about it too heavily. Enlisting in Esdham in the first place had been a way for him to escape those heavy concerns; surely he'd feel a lot better once he returned to his work.
"Please do. Even though I'm not here as often as I should be." He had a fairly good idea who she might mean by 'the others' but Sephiroth had lost track of the current roster of Heroes a few months ago and had never managed to get back on top. Last he'd known, had been when Zelda herself made it her business to come and look after him while he recovered from his accident.
Odd, the weakness that the brutal multiple fractures had delivered to his leg before simply wasn't there anymore. As if it had never happened. Something else to consider with regard to changes since stasis.
Observatory 30th June
Her tone was soft and while her focus was on him it was gentle and worried. She didn't want to pry but she could tell that something was bothering him. She didn't have any advice that she might be able to give him but she could always lend an ear. She let silence settle between them for a brief period of time studying his expression before speaking.
"I'm always here to listen."
Zelda didn't have experiences that related to anything that Sephiroth might tell her but she could empathize with the feeling of distress, with not knowing what to do and with doing what you felt you had to even if you didn't want too.
"But only if you want to talk."
Observatory 30th June
He must appear even more pathetic than he should even have a right to feel.
He couldn't comply. Wouldn't let himself give in. Since doing so would admit in more than one way that he couldn't handle it alone when he'd always been strongest on his own before. That notion of opening up scared him, and the very fact that he felt so sensitive over it was all wrong as well. What happened to his own personal standards of perfection? What happened to being stronger than this?
Sephiroth made a conscious effort to make himself appear less pathetic and unsure. Pulling his shoulders back and straightening his posture he forced himself to make eye contact with Zelda again. Carefully, he phrased the next question.
"What do you think, about being a part of the Calamity?"
Jenova...is a monster... It stung sharply, but he refused to let it drag at his iron-willed attempt to keep it together. As he looked at Zelda though, Sephiroth did wonder if she, like all the other Heroes, maybe had a right to know? If there were such parallels as Genesis had suggested...
Observatory 30th June
“It’s strange.” Her smile grew slightly. “I don’t think it’s a bad thing. In a way everything is connected and if the calamity can get between worlds to destroy them like the legend indicates then that means the power to bring us here was probably from the calamity.” Though this was just a guess but it explains when the heroes of light from the past had stayed here as well. They were connected to the calamity which was still going to rise and hence couldn’t return home.
“We also don’t understand the calamity.” It was why she couldn’t say if it was good or bad, if she had the goddess’s gifts then she’d be able to tell but for now she didn’t want to assume. “It resets the world. Almost like it’s trying to fulfill a goal. Its intentions might not be destructive but with the heroes and the people here, well…” Zelda shrugged. “It doesn’t change the fact that it is and that it’s slowly covering the world but I suppose it’s just very complicated. I can’t say I feel comfortable but I feel like it’s important that we are connected to it.”
She had no idea if she was making any sense. She often thought herself in circles which didn’t do anything to help when she had a question.
Observatory 30th June
As the words slowly came out Sephiroth sat and politely listened to them. At first, he wasn't sure that he understood where Zelda might be coming from. Calamity, the word by it's very nature was a negative thing and not to mention what Genesis had told him about it had rooted it firmly in Sephiroth's mind as a destructive force which had to be stopped. The abomination that he was destined to become.
Yet, Zelda had a very good point with regards to how it connected them all. It begged the question, if it were a natural occurrence and if Crystallis refusing to succumb to it was really the heroic epic that the legend foretold it as. What if it were preventing some sort of larger cycle from being completed, or something?
"Legends are indeed only written by the victors." It would turn a lot of things on their head, to think about it from the opposite perspective and Sephiroth only rested on that thought for a moment before shaking his head a little. The notion that they might well be the Heroes, but that the legend was backwards like that unsettled something deep in his stomach.
A long breath was blown out before Sephiroth spoke again.
"There is a Calamity, in the world that I am from. Have you a similar phenomenon in yours? Something that may be similarly misunderstood?"
Observatory 30th June
"Those legends... they weren't written by the victor in this case. It's a case where everyone loses. We write what we want it to be." She looked at him then, meeting his intense gaze. "Whether it's romance or heroism. I've read many of the legends and they are always fantastic stories. Very little is fact."
She held up a finger as she spoke.
"There isn't a Calamity where I'm from. It's darkness. It isn't something like this and it isn't something as simple as making a bad decision or defining a bad person. It's pure and it can corrupt the soul if it's given an entrance. The purpose of darkness is to take over and destroy. Hoping that only darkness is left but the world here resets or something like it, if our memories are to be believed. I can't say if it's the Calamity or something else doing it but whatever it is that's resetting it... it's like it keeps trying to get a different outcome and each time the crystal surrounds the planet that outcome isn't achieved. So it tries again."
She lowered her finger and then let out a heavy sigh. "I'm sorry. I don't really understand. I've been thinking about this so much lately and I just run into circles. I don't want to assume anything."
Observatory 30th June
"Whatever that outcome might be, we've yet to ascertain." Sephiroth nodded with a small smile at Zelda, to reassure her to that him at least she was making at least some logical sense. As logical as it could be given that so many theories dipped heavily into still-widely speculative variables.
"And that's key to gaining any insight. Why the world keeps needing to be reset."
Observatory 30th June
“Yes, though I’m not sure how to answer that question.” She felt like it was a question similar to how do we get home? It will only be answered when someone sees fit to tell them and not a moment before. It would also most likely get answered when they were faced with a choice though Zelda couldn’t help but worry and think that the question might never get answered at all. She shook her head slowly, her gaze glancing down through the gesture before looking back up at Sephiroth.
“There are a lot of unanswered questions but I will keep trying.”
At least gathering, and summarizing information was something that Zelda can do. Even if at times it felt useless.
Observatory 30th June
Sephiroth would always reject any notion that the only path to an answer to that question -and others- was when it were deemed that they either needed to know, or were ready to know. It took the control, that precious free will that everyone had, out of their hands. Unacceptable.
"Please remember that these answers are not for you to find, alone, Zelda." He commented, knowing well how Zelda had over-worried herself once before and became sick - over circumstances she couldn't do anything about any more than any of them might be able to.
