Chrom the Builder
WHO: Chrom, OPEN
WHAT: Preparing for the arrival of the refugees, Chrom lends a hand to the Santa Village in building and repairs. He is not shirtless because it's too cold, so everyone is really disappointed.
WHEN: March 12th - 19th
WHERE: Santa Village
NOTES: This is for anyone helping out in the village. Feel free to start up your own threads, you don't have to hang out with Chrom!
Chrom was dressed warmly, thanks to a few of hisfans supporters. He'd arrived in spring gear, and was swiftly reduced to chattering teeth and shivering when he realized it was still snowing heavily in this part of the world. But the Moogles were kind, swathing him in a thick woolly scarf, finding fleece-lined gloves for his hands, and using one of the old Santa coats from the holiday season to bundle onto his broad shoulders.
Now he could work without restraint. Sometimes a Moogle flew up to him with a cup of hot coffee or cocoa. (Sometimes they fought over whose turn it was to bring him a hot beverage.) With the bright crimson of his coat, it was easy to see Chrom wherever he was working, whether it be tamping down shingles on a rooftop, or carrying lumber from the woodpiles. The new houses weren't quite so spectacular, but they would provide shelter from the snow, and each one was outfitted with a fireplace, which was absolutely essential to keeping families warm.
Once they had enough basic homes for everyone, then Chrom could get to work with the others on making those humble places into real houses. Did he worry that all of his hard work would go to waste if the Calamity encroached upon this continent too? ...A little. What Garland said was right, they couldn't keep herding refugees from one place to another, stuffing them into increasingly limited living spaces. But it was better than being taken over by the crystal entity, of that much he knew for certain. If it came down to it, he'd give up his own housing and take to the road, much as he had when leading the Shepherds.
While he worked, the Moogles whispered amongst themselves. They'd heard he was a prince. No, a king! exclaimed another. A shame it was so cold, the tourism might have been boosted significantly if he would just labor without a shirt. What a pity.

Darres | Open March 12-19th
He was perfectly content with shoveling the snow to make way for the foundation of the homes. Darres was one the few people who could work diligently without so much as making a peep. There were very few things he complained about, and none of them were here. He would collaborate when necessary, but for the most part kept to himself as he set down the foundation and worked from the ground up. Having rather unusual stamina for someone of his stature, Darres took few breaks between his work.
It was easier to remain busy and make use of his time rather than spend it doing something else.
Most of his down time was spent recuperating. It wouldn't do anyone any good if he end up overworking himself into a constant state of exhaustion. He favored spending his down time around a camp fire he set up for himself. He only ate meat when necessary, and had packed more than enough food to sustain himself. It was easier to preserve in such cold weather. Most of the food was bread, some type of nut, and a variety of greens.

He assumed Darres had taken up a room at the inn at first. But after a few days passed and Chrom saw that there was no sign of his friend when it came time to take a meal, he grew concerned. He was at the inn...right?
Finally he asked the innkeeper, and was shocked when she told him that no one matching Darres's description had asked for a room. So where was he? Chrom set out to discover the answer to that question, and it wasn't long before the light of the campfire drew his attention. And there he was, settling in for a humble dinner in a very cold place.
"Good gods, Darres," Chrom stared as he approached. "Don't tell me you've been sleeping out here too. It's much too cold."
no subject
Darres glanced up at the other, none too bothered. Sure it was cold, and perhaps uncomfortable. He had withstood much worse. In reality, he was just grateful to even have his own body back. he finished the contents in his mouth before replying respectfully.
"It's bearable with fire." He could have easily stayed at the inn along with everyone else, but he wasn't very compelled to. He did a lot things that most people didn't. Of course, most of what he did, he didn't do for himself, but for someone else.

Except by a warm bed in a warm inn room, of course.
"If you need someone to spot the costs, I'd be more than happy to do so," Chrom offered. He was all for making his own bed in the great outdoors and rustling up his own food, as that's what the Shepherds did. But not when it was this cold.
and a threadjack hi
She also brought some warmed bread she made from flirting up the inn keeper to let her use their kitchen. Of course, that would have to be picked up after another trip since she didn't seem to have any free arms at all.
"Never mind that, Darres-- sweetie I brought an extra blanket and some wood for the fire. I'll give you hand with that after a few minutes. I need to go back to the inn to grab the bread I just baked," she replied with a smile glued to her face, "And pleasure to meet. It appear to be an acquaintance of Darres right?"
She chimed paying more attention to the stranger. So her son knew how to make friends huh? Excellent.
go away mom
"I don't need it." He knew what he was getting into before he agreed to help with it. "Thank you." Anyway. Even if he was denying it.
Really, he couldn't be happier where he was, right now, helping the way he did.

"That's right. We met a few weeks back." Hitting things with swords and bonding in the manliest of fashions. "My name is Chrom. It's a pleasure to meet you as well, Miss."
He would have assumed that the two were either sweethearts or siblings, but given how she fussed, he was leaning more toward the 'family' aspect of their relationship. There was nothing romantic between them as far as he could tell. (But then again, Chrom was notoriously dense about such things.) "I hope I haven't interrupted anything?" he hedged. Ordinarily he'd offer to fetch the bread himself, but he wasn't about to deny either of them a chance to step into a warm building, even if only for a short while.
never my lovely son :D
She was busy but not at the same time.
"Of course, I had to sweetheart," she replied with a chuckle, "I would never let my precious boy be on his own now would I?"
Yes, embarrassing at its finest, "and you're welcome Darres." She chimed with a bright smile. She was a trained solider, thus her movements were pretty light to begin with. Of course, Chrom didn't know that since she hardly exuded that sort of behavior.
"Pleasure is mine. Thank you for taking care of Darres, Chrom. He can be a bit antisocial sometimes. I'm glad to hear that he has friends. My name is Selen, Darres' foster mother, it's a pleasure," she chimed offering him a hand after she set everything down.
"Not at all~"

Not that he can. Both his birth parents are DEAD!Darres quietly started to eat his bread. He wasn't going to engage in their introduction if it was their first time meeting each other. He also made no comment on her description of him
We should get Wil to app Batman so we can have a Dead Parents Club.
He looked around at their little camp. It seemed they'd worked hard to situate themselves out here, and in such a cold environment at that. If that was what they wanted, he wasn't about to argue the situation. He'd done the same countless times while moving about the countryside with the Shepherds.
"Well then, if you're both comfortable here, perhaps I could fetch some firewood, or hunt? It's kind of you both to come all the way out here, I wish to return the favor."
hahaah oh god that's just awful
She was still reminded that he wasn't her child at times, though it felt like he was since he had taken well after her in many aspects, except he was easily pushed around. In which she wished he would stop letting himself be that door mat but it was Darres. Fighting him on that matter was pointless.
"It's quite alright. You don't have to do that. You've been more than helpful towards Darres. For that I'm grateful."
Let's not
"We met not that long ago outside of Aqures." He paused to think for moment. "He's a talented swordsman." And that's extent that he knew Chrom.
It dawned on him that back in his world he didn't know that much about Yuujin either. The circumstances slightly differ since Yuujin made it a point to keep his a secret, but maybe he should learn to know his acquaintances a little better. He never did get to meet Quark fully, either, and it was too late for that too.
"If you're willing to share...I'll listen."

He supposed the firewood and hunting could wait a few moments more.
"My sister and I are from the royal family in the halidom of Ylisse," he said, taking a knee before the fire so he could warm his hands. "We recently formed a pact of peace with the kingdom to the south, after a long and brutal war. You both may have met my tactician, Robin. She and I are part of a band that travels the countryside to drive off brigands and troublemakers -- we're called the Shepherds. We recently discovered that in the future of our world, I ask her to be my wife, and she accepts."
He smiled wryly. "Which came as a bit of a shock to the both of us, as you can imagine. But Darres is right," he said with a nod toward his fellow swordsman, "I've trained exclusively in the use of the sword. And I thank you for your kind remark."
no subject
"Oh-- is that so. That is quite interesting to know. I haven't met a noble with a demeanor like yours. Not that it's a bad thing. You seem very kind-- like someone I know~ Well I suppose I can add, Darres and I serve the royal family in our world. I used to be a former General of the Knights. I'm more less retired you see. Darres is of course handling the Knights in my stead."
She seemed so proud giving that explanation by the way. They could probably see the sparkles in her eyes as she talked about her favorite son.
"That is quite the peach you two have gotten into but it's rather cute to know the future no?"
"Perhaps, I will request a sword match with you on a later date. I am eager to learn about how good of a swordsman you are."
no subject
To Selen's offer, he inclined his head with a smile. "I would be honored, ma'am." He wasn't sure how to address her if she'd given up her rank, as she might hold another, but he hoped he was sufficiently polite. "I always enjoy a good match with a fellow swordsman." Or swordswoman, in this case.
He did want to ask Selen more about his case, but it was a fairly personal matter, not meant to be put on the table in front of someone he'd just met. Still, there was something maternal about her that put him at ease. Instead, he decided to focus on the 'saving the world' topic, since that was something they could all relate to.
"Yes," he answered Darres. "If that is what we were called here to do, then that is what must be done. Our people are depending on us, even if they're not aware of our presence here. I only wish we had a better idea of what it is we must do." He rubbed his hands slowly together, turning his gaze to the fire as he knit his brow. "All I know is that the refugees who will be coming here need our help. That is something no one else can make a reality without our status and clout, unfortunately. So I am grateful to you both for contributing."
no subject
"Selen is fine, dear."
She replied with a chuckle at his formality. She had more or less outgrown that sort of thing and Crystallis isn't exactly a place for honorifics and formalities. It's kind of a battle field and they were all on the same equal ground of course. She would be willing to discuss with Chrom if he wanted to speak with her later on the matter when they were more acquainted.
"I enjoy assisting people and not everyone is fortunate to be able to defend themselves. You're quite welcome. I'm afraid I'm not as selfless as you. I don't assisting others but only because we share a common goal."
