[Hisui took a seat, rather rigid and formal - he wasn't used to games like this, so he didn't know if he was going to perform any social faux pas by being his usual self. Curse Akane for talking him into signing up.]

Hello.

[... that's all he's got. Though he coughs from the smoke.]

[Kaji is kind enough to move his cigarette below the edge of the table between drags.]

"Hello, yourself. May the best man win, eh?"

[Kaji opens by placing the Tonberry King card in the Top Left corner space.]

Right, right.

[Hisui places a Tri-Face ~~in attack mode!~~ next to the Tonberry, upper center. Recalling the tips that Akane gave him, he figures this is the best place to put the Tri-Face card.]

Kaji smiles at the Tri-Face card, it had almost been one that he'd chosen for this contest, and that would have been right where he would put it. If they're thinking on such similar wavelengths..?

He looks over his cards briefly, before putting an Iron Giant Card in the Center space. 6 versus 5, Kaji captures the Tri-Face.

Tch.

[Hisui doesn't like losing. Then again, who does? After weighing his options, he places Torama in the center-bottom square. The right and left may have been exposed, but he was hoping that things would work out.]

7 versus 6, Hisui takes the Iron Giant. Kaji's frown suddenly matches Hisui's. He'd thought picking this one was a risk for this match, but he selects the Adamantoise card to go in the Middle Right. 6 versus 5, Kaji takes his Iron Giant back.

"You know these things are real?" Kaji looks at the image on the card for a long second before he puts it down. "And a lot bigger than they look."

Really now? I've been a wings-attachment Soma evolve into a gigantic airship, which is probably similar.

[Hisui places the Ruby Dragon card on the upper-right hand corner.]

You seen anything bigger than the giant in your home world, old timer?

4 against 5 on the left, doesn't take the Tri-Face back, but the Ruby Dragon's 7 against a 4 takes Kaji's Adamantoise. 3 to 3.

Kaji's eyebrows raise in alarm and he looks up from his cards at the kid. His elbow thumps on the table, and he raises one finger, "One, I've seen monsters bigger than the Aqures Ixen castle, and pieces of armor the same size to fight them."

A second finger raises. "And two." He puts down his strongest card, Abaddon in the Bottom Right spot. "This old timer is kicking your butt."

6 versus 5 to the top, Kaji takes his Adamantoise back, and 5 versus 4 to the left, Kaji also takes Hisui's Torama card. 6 to 1, and Kaji leans back, as if he believes he has this won.

Well, my ass is fantastic. It's no wonder you would want contact with it.

[Deliberating, Hisui bit his lower lip as he knows that was a decisive blow. He puts his own Abaddon in the lower left hand corner, resigned to his fate.]

Kaji bursts into laughter, but shakes his head. "And here I figure I'm too old for your tastes."

Hisui's Abadon takes back his own Torama, but Kaji places his last card, Trauma in the last space.

Final score is 6 to 3, Kaji.

Kaji stubs out his cigarette, and offers over a hand. "Thanks for the match."

[Hisui takes it and shakes, scratching his cheek with the other hand.]

No problem. Sorry I didn't put up more of a fight.

The rules say you get to take one of the cards you won, right? Go ahead.

"Ah," Kaji had actually forgotten that rule. "If you insist," Kaji picks up the Tri-Face.

"Good card, but this thing's got to be fake, right?" He taps his thumb on the image. "I've seen some weird stuff in this world, but this?" He thinks he draws the line at three-headed dog.

I would certainly hope so. But then again sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

Back where I'm from apparently the Sleeping Beauty was real all along.

[And she resided in his sister's consciousness, to boot.]

That gets a surprised blink out of Kaji. "Of all the fairy tales to be true. That one? H-unh. Of course, if I were to pick one to be true, I don't know what I'd choose."

Kaji leans back in his chair and props his feet up. They've got time before the next round. "So what did you do back home?" It's hard to explain his own world from someone without a shared cultural or technological background, so Kaji always has to toss that question out, first.

Mostly I traveled the world trying to find shards of my sister's heart before finding out that one of the moons in the sky was actually a monster that was going to suck out everyone's souls.

Plus: Similar to the Same rule. When one card is placed touching two others and the ranks touching the cards plus the opposing rank equal the same sum, then both cards are captured. Combo rule applies.

Combo: Of the cards captured by the Same, Same Wall or Plus rule, if they are adjacent to another card whose rank is lower, it is captured as well. This is not a separate rule; any time Same or Plus is in effect, Combo is in effect as well.

"You're not going to go easy on me, are you? I left all my toys at home." Deadpool said, approaching his chair and swinging his leg around it to sit down. "And these sorts of events also usually mean we're gonna be ambushed."

Kaji chuckles at the idea of going easy on anyone. "Of course not. Would hardly be any fun if I did." Especially not after Shinji's very long pep talk about 'stomping that jerk who cheated in the Moogle election.' He's got to win this one for the fluff-ball.

Kaji opens with the same move he did in his last match: The Tonberry King card in the Top Left corner.

It took a moment for Deadpool to make sure everything was set up, laying out his hand: Gesper, Ochu, Tonberry, Wendigo, Elastoid.

"Good, because the last time I tried this, it was quite messy!" he said before setting up the Wendigo card at the bottom right.

That actually gives Kaji pause. "How did you make a mess playing a card game? Or, do you mean, the last time we did a big public event like this?" His opponent is just as paranoid as he is. Good.

Kaji's response is to put down the Abaddon card in the Bottom Center. 8 versus 6, Kaji captures Wendigo.

"Uh, the last one. All these children's card games are all the same! At least it's not Serious Business!" Deadpool replied before noticing what Kaji did, letting out a shocked screech.

"You took my monster!" He glared at him before putting Elastoid in the Center Right.

Kaji ponders that for a moment, before nodding. "Fair point. I did have to keep you all from making too big of a mess of the Observatory last month."

Kaji keeps up the aggressive pacing of the match. "And I think I'm going to take this one, too." The Trauma card goes in the center space, 8 against 7, Kaji also captures the Elastoid.

"Oh, it wasn't that bad - I mean, we didn't suddenly sink into the depths of despair and all! Or was that the month before? Oh, who does it matter, it happens all the time!" Deadpool said... before noticing another monster being taken.

"Augh, no!" He slumped down, head in hands. "I'm losing! Me!" With a grunt, he put the Tonberry on the upper center spot.

Kaji tilts his head to the side as he looks at the cards. "Darn, nothing that can take that one. I kind of like the little guys, spooky as they are. They're here, they're real. I know someone had to have captured one for the Monster Arena if you want to see."

Eeney meeney miney, Kaji selects the GIM47N card to go in the Top Right corner.

"Ah-ha! A chance to counterattack!" Deadpool declared. looking at what was left. Tonberry King at top left, Wendigo at bottom right, Abaddon at bottom center, Elastoid at center right, Trauma at center, Tonberry at upper center, and GIM47N at Top Right. That just left center left and bottom left. Deadpool pondered and pondered... and noticed his counterattack.

"Ah-ha!" And he placed his Ochu beside the Abadon. "6 greater than 5, it's mine!"

At least he hopes so!

Correct, the Ochu takes Kaji's Abaddon, but if anything, it makes Kaji smile more. He puts down his final card, The Iron Giant card in the Middle Left space, its 6 takes the Ochu right back, ending the game.

Final score is 7 to 2, Kaji.

There is an excited burst of cheering from the audience behind him. "Ku-kupo! Go, Kaji!" A moogle with a Scholar mortarboard hat handing off one ear is whistling and cheering as if he just saw the final of a blitzball game.

Kaji laughs and shakes his head at Shinji. He offers a hand to Deadpool. "Good game, thanks."

"Aaaugh, no! This wasn't supposed to be! I'm a main character! We're supposed to win!" Deadpool griped before he dropped his head onto the table and extended his hand to take Kaji's and shake it. "Just tell your Moogle to calm down or he'll be learning to fly out of that cannon!"

"Shinji can be a little...easily excitable." Which is a strange sentence for Kaji to be saying, all things considered.

Kaji picks his last card back up, the Iron Giant, and looks at it carefully. "Where do they get the ideas for these things? I know some of them are real. But I wouldn't want to come across one of these." Giant metal man with a sword as big as a building? It'd be like trying to fight an Eva on foot.

"Heck if I know!" Deadpool said, lifting head head up once more. "A video game? But, who'd make a game out of this?" Oh, he resisted the urge to chuckle. HE KNEW.

Random: Cards were designated by the mods in signup.

[OOC: I rolled an 11, so Kaji gets to go first!]

[The ferocious flying funyarinpa looks...not so ferocious at all. Nor is she flying. Instead, there's a young lady with long brown hair sitting politely in her chair, the deck of cards face down on the table. She's smiling, stretching her neck as she tries to see how one of her friends is faring in his game, until she notices that Kaji has arrived.]

[Quickly she jumps out of her chair and bows.]

Hello, pleased to meet you! My name is Akane, I will be your opponent this round.

[She straightens with a bright grin.]

Good luck! I'm looking forward to our match!

A slow, flirtatious smile spreads across Kaji's face, and he offers a hand in reply to her bow. "I had no idea my last opponent was going to be so lovely. Ryoji Kaji. Friends just call me Kaji, though."

"Good luck," with a wink, as he sits down.

He pulls the top five cards from his deck, random, and sets them out for Akane to see. He opens with The Ochu Card in the Bottom Left corner.

Well sure, Akane could shake his hand if that was what he preferred. "I had no idea either, hee hee!" Did she just call him lovely? Maybe she thought she was funny. Either way, she found him to be a pleasant person, and she was very much looking forward to their match.

His first card was well played, Akane could see that much. And with her randomized cards, she had a feeling she might be at a disadvantage. "Oh, that's a good place to put that one," she noted. Spreading her cards in her hand, her eyes flicked from the board to the creatures, comparing numbers and odds.

Finally she drew out The Anacondaur Card and placed it in the Bottom Right corner, not engaging his card in combat quite yet.

Oh ho. Well, if there's any flirting to be done, then Kaji will keep the momentum going. The smile stays on his face, and he pitches his voice down a little. "Likewise, a good choice. Hmmm."

Unlike the other matches, Kaji starts this one out more defensively. He has things that could immediately take her card, but, instead, he chooses to put the Caterchipillar card in the Bottom Center space. "Let's see how you like this one..."

Akane glanced up at Kaji, and grinned, her eyes twinkling. He definitely had some sort of strategy in mind, she was sure about that. It was exciting to play against someone smart. If she won, it was that much more gratifying. If she lost, she could ask him to teach her some of his strategies.

After a few moments of consideration, she put her Grat card in the center space, still not managing to initiate any conflicts just yet. "There we go. Your turn!"

There was definitely a strategy in mind, because Kaji can't help the twinkle that shows in his eye, and the way his smile grows when she places the Grat card there. That was exactly the outcome he was hoping for.

Kaji places the Vysage card in the Middle Left space. The Vysage's 5 against the Grat's 1, no other conflicts: Kaji takes the card.

"Sorry," no he isn't, he's smiling too much to be.

"Ahhhh, I was afraid of that," she sighed. She had the perfect card to play in that spot, which was probably why he'd taken it. It was smart. Very smart. She didn't have any ample opportunities this round, so after deliberating for a few moments, she played The Grand Mantis card on the opposite site of the Grat in the Middle Right space. Poor Grat, beaten up on both sides. It was retaken, but it wasn't much of a contest.

"There's a little bit of everything that goes into this game. Numbers and luck, sure, but it's also about territory control. It's not just what moves I can make, but what moves can I make you make?" He isn't looking at the board when he makes his next move, but at Akane, herself.

As if to prove his point, Kaji puts down The Iron Giant card in the Top Right space.

6 on the Grand Mantis' 5, no other conflicts: Kaji takes that card.

Akane shook her head with a defeated little smile. It didn't matter what card she played now, the game was lost. Well, then, if she was going to lose, she would lose gracefully...and let him pile on the points. She placed the Blue Dragon card on the Top Middle spot, leaving its left 3-point side completely exposed if he had a card that could at least match that. The Blue Dragon's score only matched the Grat beneath it, and didn't stand up to the Iron Giant on its right.

"You're very good," she complimented him, sitting back and letting her Abadon card rest on the tabletop since it had no chance of being used. "You've definitely earned this win. Can we play again sometime?"

Kaji puts his own Abaddon card down as a formality. Technically, its 8 takes the Blue Dragon's 3, but it doesn't really matter.

Final score is 7 to 2, Kaji.

"Of course!" Kaji grins and sticks out his hand again to shake. "And you've got good instincts. A little more practice, and I'm sure that you'd have beaten me."

"You're newer here?" He can't remember running into her at the last few Hero get-togethers.

"Oh, I'm not so sure about that," Akane chuckled, shaking his hand. Oddly enough, there was a faint tremor in her fingers. She kept the handshake brief as a result, in the vague hope that he wouldn't notice, and kept her hands folded on her lap beneath the table.

She could answer his question honestly, and tipped her head forward with a single nod. "Yes, sir. I arrived just a few weeks ago." Akane tipped her head back, her eyes roaming across the room as she slowly turned. "It's an awful lot to take in, but I think I've been adjusting pretty fast. What about you?" she smiled, leaning forward. "How long have you been here?"

Kaji smiles encouragingly. "You have been adjusting fast, then. I'm impressed. I've been here...let's see." Kaji visibly counts on his fingers. "Almost 22 months."

"I was in the first 'group' of us," air quotes. "Lack of a better term. Nobody knew for sure what was going on, but the people had their stories, which they were happy to tell us. The advisors to the castle, Biggs and Wedge, they knew to expect us, got us settled in fast, partnered us up with the moogles." Kaji's moogle, Shinji, is hovering in the audience, the Scholar mortarboard hat precariously balanced on his head.

"And the rest is history." Kaji smiles. "And then you came to join us. I'm sure others have said it, but welcome again."

Akane smiled. He seemed like a really kind person. Manipulative and shrewd, but kind. It seemed like he probably came from Japan too, based on the name he'd given her. "Thanks! It's very nice to be here." Even with the monsters and the end of the world looming over everyone's shoulders, her experiences so far had been surprisingly pleasant.

"So if you were here from the very beginning, you probably know almost all there is to know about this place. Even so, that's a long time to be away from your home." She hesitated a little, mulling over her question, then apparently decided to smile again instead of asking what had been resting on the tip of her tongue. "Is there any history I should keep in mind?"

Kaji's head slowly tilts to the side. "I don't know if 'nice' is the first word I'd use, but this place has its moments." More moments of peace here than in Tokyo-3, really.

"Let's see. History to keep in mind. The following people are jerks and are probably screwing us around:" Kaji proceeds to count off on his fingers. "Palitulu, who pretended to be a court advisor for about the first year we were here. The brat moogle, Artemicion, who was previously running Mognet Central, but ran his own people into the ground double-dealing." No, Kaji doesn't take Artemicion's betrayal personally at all.

"Kalki, who still owes me dinner and is probably dead. That old guy calling himself a Sage in the continent to the West? Jerk. Big jerk. And we don't need him. Give him time, he's probably gonna contact us again saying that even though we failed his first test, he's 'willing to give us another chance,' because he's desperate for attention."

"On the flip side, people who look like they are jerking us around, but are actually not? Cid. Keep on his good side, he's keeping this Kingdom running for us. Um, Kurma and Prajapati. They were previously working with the Heran Empire, but their top priority is to keep the people alive. They've got little to nothing to do with this whole Calamity business."

"I find that the who can be a lot more valuable information than the what, you know?" Oh dear, does she have Kaji's number already.

As long as that number never appeared as a bracelet on his wrist, he was safe.

Akane listened intently as he spoke, committing the names to memory. Naturally she knew she would have to take all opinions with a grain of salt, but she had a feeling he probably had a good understanding of these people.

The one person who caused her to perk up was Cid. As soon as he said Cid's name, Akane beamed. "Oh, I like him! He reminds me of somebody I knew back home." Tenmyouji could have been Cid's long lost brother. Or father. Or uncle? Some sort of relation. She hadn't actually met Cid, but she'd caught a glimpse when she went to the castle to turn in her application. He'd been delightfully surly.

"So...how does Kalki owe you dinner?" That sounded like it had an interesting story, and if they still had some time while the referees tallied up the points, she was absolutely on board for getting to know her fellow heroes better.
