It was clear that he only wanted to let Ellie know that he was also interested in that particular line of inquiry, and thus had no reason other than that to make eye contact with her at all, so that he wouldn't be seen to be muscling in. Jade was the focus here, and if nothing else Sephiroth still felt a certain duty towards the man even if they didn't work together anymore.

Jade had gone that much further than just as far as honor might once have bound them together as comrades.

Silently, Sephiroth nodded along as Jade answered and then Ellie proceeded down her line of questioning. It all made very much more sense than her -he thought- patchy theories on Downapolis at that time. Intriguing, if more than a little concerning, to think that the murderer would go to the trouble of slaughtering two innocent passers-by in the wake of Jade's murder; to remove witnesses? To add a personal thorn in the side of the general populace and so make the crime impossible to be ignored?

Of course, it could easily have been an escalation the culprit felt was needed.

"Hm," Was the only noise made, in support of Ellie and waiting for Jade's response.

"That is correct. It was early in the morning, so there weren't many people around."

It was possible they had been walking far enough behind Jade that he simply hadn't noticed. He'd had no reason to be looking over his shoulder, nor to pay close attention to random passersby. Still, it was best not to add speculation to his testimony.

At Ellie's request, Jade nodded and started walking towards the bloodstain.

"I was on my way to work. Nothing unusual happened until I got here-" He reached the bloodstain and halted, "Then, I heard the sound of a Limit Break being activated behind me and the air around me grew cold. Naturally, I turned around."

He turned on his heels. Almost 180 degrees, but not quite.

"And then I died. I couldn't say what it was that killed me, I'm afraid -- it all happened in hardly a second."

"A blessed thing to be sure, considering the size of the puddle your corpse left behind," Ellie remarked, arching a brow as she studied Jade thoughtfully. It was a fairly narrow street, so the attack had to have come from behind him. She wondered...

"How good is your hearing?" she asked, taking a slow, steady stroll toward the area where she suspected the attacker had probably stood. Then she pivoted to face Jade, one hand on her hip. "It must be exceptional if you heard a sound like that and recognized it so swiftly. Did you hear the footsteps of your attacker? Was it someone with a heavy gait, or someone light of foot?"

As Jade went about retracing his steps in front of them both, Sephiroth also took care to take in the surroundings. The crime scene had been combed over a few dozen times -at least- already but the whole thing did seem to have something missing about it still. As such, he stayed back a fair few paces as Ellie strolled in to position herself where the felon may well have stood in relation to Jade; her logic, as he followed it, was as sharp as it was sound.

Could there have been a difference in acoustics given the fairly narrow street? The silver warrior wasn't so sure, and so narrowed eyes at the two of them while he dug around in his own thoughts deeper. Jade surely must have had to have near supernatural hearing to have noticed - footfalls generally faded into background noise within a populated area.

Potentially, there was a clue there as well, so he continued to listen.

"Sadly, you're giving me too much credit there. Limit Breaks make a very distinctive sound when activated. Anyone could have heard it."

Jade himself hadn't heard it many times before this. Only once or twice, during one of those bigger monster hunts. Still, it was hard to mistake it for anything else.

"I don't recall hearing any footsteps. I suppose they either managed to sneak up close without me noticing, or their attack method can close distances very quickly."

Ellie paused. There was a faint widening of her eyes, and it was clear that this wasn't the answer she expected. She shot a brief look at Sephiroth to see if his thoughts aligned with hers, before directing her attention back to Jade.

"That narrows things down significantly," she said, swiftly recovering. "It means your attacker could do one of three things: Fly, teleport, or move silently. There are many jobs that allow these things. But I am not certain how accurate teleportation is, that it would allow someone to move directly behind you. I think it can be ruled out. That leaves the other two options, then. There are some advanced jobs that allow for flight, but the Psychic is the only one that may do it without making noise. The Vampire silences movement completely."
