You shouldn't forget it. [That he's a monster.] I don't see myself as a Hero of Light.

[He's just going to make sure he's explicitly clear on where he stands, which is partially Midna's fault for convincing him they can both run around not being called Heroes. It also tells a story about how separated he is from the city itself. In the two months since they first met, it's clear Dylas has only distanced himself from things a Hero might instead embrace.]

I don't know what a Limit Break is. [He does look confused by that, and he looks down at Koporo who looks a little uncomfortable behind his veil. Dylas' file is locked, meaning Koporo was very likely someone who could have seen to it.] And I don't know who Jade is.

That you're a monster? Why should I worry about that? Most humans here have a good memory. They remember that I'm something they've never seen before. Lots of rude stares when I first showed up here.

[The other humans in the room might take offense to that, but for now, it's just Ales and Dylas. The latter who's calling attention to his species as if he weren't tired of confused looks seeing the Teensie for the first time.]

Whether you consider yourself a Hero or now, you're technically a Hero of Light. We all have special abilities, Limit Breaks included. [He directs his gaze at Koporo, who's at a closer level to him.] You explained to Dylas what those are, right?

[He doesn't respond to the first part. He's already made it clear that he's a monster, he's not sure if that will help his innocence or not but he's not going to insist he's human anymore and that he has the same view on these happenings as other people.]

Koporo never explained them to me, no.

[And now all of the attention is on the Moogle, who seems to fidget a little before speaking up. He wants to talk about Dylas' Limit Break very little, it seems. First, he explains what a Limit Break is, and then.]

K-kupo...but Dylas' Limit Break is dangerous. It's called W... [He pauses.] The name isn't important, but it's very dangerous! Dylas' hands get cold, and...he'll attack whatever's closest with his claws. It makes him go berserk, kupo! I'm sorry, Dylas...

[Dylas doesn't react much to this news. He just turns away slightly. It all sounds familiar to him, anyways.]

[By this time, Akane has received Koporo's letter, asking for her assistance. Her face is grim as she reads, but she doesn't waste any time rising to her feet and departing for the station. She knows how prickly Dylas can be, and if he reacts defensively (or worse, aggressively), he's not going to get a chance to understand what they're dealing with. And more people will die.]

[After confirming her status as a Hero of Light, and holding up the letter she received, the guards reluctantly escort her to the interrogation room. It's up to Sparks whether she stays or goes, but she's confident she can be helpful in uncovering the truth.]

[She knocks.]

I wanna be clear that "monster" means nothin' to the lot of us. Yer talkin' to people from all over the dang multiverse. Plenty 'a folks here look different than the rest.

And what I want now is an alibi. Because we got no proof of where ya were when Jade and the civilians were killed. No official word, anyway.

[When the door's knocked on, Sparks gets up to answer it. He's surprised to see Akane, but he shouldn't be. She did say she wanted to help.]

...Yeah?

[He's not going to clarify why he keeps repeating that. Partially, it's because he wants everyone to distance themselves from this whole thing, but there's another reason for it, too.]

I work nights because I'm nocturnal, not because of the Vampire thing. I catch fish and I sell them to restaurants. It's hard work, but if you ask around you'll find out I haven't missed a day of sales since I started.

[He'll let Sparks usher Akane in. Dylas won't even look at her, suddenly feeling like...maybe he should be ashamed for this, but he hasn't done anything wrong. He knows he hasn't, but...]

Please excuse me. Koporo asked me to come.

[She bows politely to Sparks, then her gaze slides past him to where Dylas is sitting sullen and uncomfortable.]

Dylas is my housemate. So I might be able to help if no one minds?

Yeah, c'mon in and join the party, I guess.

[Sparks returns to his notes to jot Dien what Dylas said. He's going to want a list of his patrons later.]

Anythin' weird happen on the night of the 15th? Any part of the night ya don't remember?

My nights are pretty calm. I like to enjoy the...quiet, I guess.

[Meaning that if he missed an hour or two, he might've not even noticed.

He glances to Akane. He's still not sure why he's here, but he looks a little sheepish now.]

So, you think I did it, too. Is that why you came?

[Akane nods her thanks to Sparks before entering the room, standing halfway between the two of them. She tilts her head slightly with a concerned frown at Dylas's question. Is he asking her if she's prejudiced? Does he really think she'd accuse him just because of his appearance? She takes his hand and squeezes it as she delivers a gentle rebuke.]

If you want people to give you the benefit of the doubt, shouldn't you do the same for them?

[Akane gives his fingers a light pat before letting it go, then leaning on the table with both of her palms as she turns to Sparks.]

I've been reviewing the cases at the lab. We have a lot of suspects, and we've got plenty of evidence to convict most of them. But there's still something missing.

[Can you guess what it is?]

A motive.

That's stupid. I didn't want anything from you, it's Koporo's fault that you're here.

[It's not entirely the truth. Beneath a year of resentment for things he couldn't control, he's glad to see at least someone familiar is in the room. Koporo mutters a weak defense for his decision to bring Akane in and apologizes in an attempt to curry some favor with his sullen Hero.]

If you've got plenty of evidence, then what the hell are you holding back on? I don't have any clue about what went down, but I can't defend myself without knowing why I'm here.

[He scoffs, starting to feel a bit worried. He's not entirely sure he's innocent, but then again he might be the only Hero who's been on rampages before. Who knows.]

Not everyone needs a motive to do something.

[Why does he sound like he's speaking from personal experience, golden eyes suddenly set on Akane and very serious? Does she want to tread down that topic with him?]

[ Ales climbs onto the stool provided for him and eaves her over. She might have found something useful on her own, but first he has to share the most important piece of information the gathered. Once she's close enough he leans in for a whisper. ]

Ice claws.

[ And back to standing up. ]

It's true not everyone needs a motive, particularly if someone else is ordering them, but there's always the possibility that our culpeither did it out of spite. Thanks for reminding us, Dylas.

Now, there's a theory that's been floating around. That someone outside of our circle is controlling the Heroes to commit these murders. If that's the case, then you're safe and can point us to the true culprit. If not, well, then we will be disappointed in you.

But if that is the case, provin' it is gonna be tough, if not darn near impossible. Unless there's a way to trace however it might of been done... Whatever mighta been done...

[Sparks shrugs slightly. It was a very tenuous theory right now.]

But it does negate the need for a motive, if that really is the case. This is why I need ya to be more specific about yer night. You never answered me. Did ya see anything or anyone outta place? You missin' any time ya can't explain?

[Koporo hopes off his chair to Dylas' leg to give him some support. Dylas waits about three seconds and then sets the Moogle down on the floor like an unwelcome cat has just hopped onto his lap. He's a little uncomfortable, and he runs his hands through his hair. The always-pale wendigo looks a bit more sickly somehow.]

It...I went back to the inn like always, and I went to bed. I think someone spoke to me, maybe the innkeeper, but I sleep during the day. Why are you so sure it's me, dammit? He wasn't...missing anything, was he? The victim?

[ Ales eyes Sparks without turning his head, a gesture not easily noticeable by others thanks to his small eyes. That human was the one that questioned Duster the other day; he would know more about how potential mind control would work.

Back to Dylas. ]

He and the natives that were killed alongside him were found cold and damp as if they were frozen with ice magic. However, they were also attacked with what looked like small blades. Nothing was taken from Jade, just his life.

Natives?! What the hell, there were more?!

[If it had been mentioned before ~~it's my bad and not Dylas'~~, so we'll just say he didn't catch on until now. Sh.]

Then...how the hell do you think it was me?! I don't own a blade, I just have my claws. Doesn't something seem wrong about this to you? I don't...if it were me...they'd have been slashed, or...or they'd be missing something.

[He has a sick feeling in his gut about something, though. There's one more thing that isn't adding up to him.]

Yes, yes there were. Most people would remember killing multiple folks.

[Perhaps a confirmation that Dylas wasn't totally himself during the attack. Ales knows that look on Dylas' face. He knows what it's like when he's tired of showing compassion and sympathy. To put this much energy into worrying tells a lot.

He hopes this fellow non-human isn't the type to do something stupid like murder for fun.]

Could you stab someone with them? If you weren't in full control, say, if someone who wasn't used to your body tried to figure out how claws worked, would it be possible?

...And what to you mean "missing something"?

Yeah. Most people would.

[But that's not something he wants to hear. They don't crystallize, do they? The natives. That's...two people dead who will never come back to life. If it was him, was he controlled? Or was it his own limit break?

How is he supposed to figure that out?]

My claws aren't that long. [Quietly, he admits that, and then he lifts his hand. His fingers look slightly off, like someone stretched them to be just one millimeter towards "too long," but aside from that and the claws they look like...claws, about an inch or an inch and a half long. They're slightly darker in color, but...it looks like he'd have to use a lot of force to stab someone with them, and it wouldn't be clean.] And claws aren't complicated, they're...hell, I don't know. They're not hard to figure out. They don't look like a blade, that's all I know.

[He's ignoring that last question for now because it would have been obvious if any of them were missing the thing he was speaking about. But if the murder fits his elements...ice, inhuman ears, limit break...but it doesn't match his claws, what does it mean? That's what he wants to know.]

Someone coulda given you a blade. Gotten rid of it after the job was done.

[Sparks says that out loud, but he doesn't even sound convinced of it. The idea of mind control left too many what-ifs.]

Ice... Coulda been some kinda icicle attack, maybe. Somethin' that stabbed the victims, then melted. No weapon left behind.

[It was far-fetched, but a lot of things were possible with magic.]

Am I even capable of doing something like that?

[Koporo looks a little unsure. His Limit Break does involve ice magic, not just making his hands cold, and he'll explain that to the investigators. Dylas seems to be growing increasingly nervous and a little desperate.]

If...if it were me, how would anyone know? I don't need to be mind-controlled to kill people. My limit break puts me in a berserk state, right? I still don't understand what the hell that means, and it's annoying.

[Koporo looks nervous, too, but Dylas continues, speaking to...himself, more than anyone.]

I've been on rampages before. Back...where I come from. It's because I'm a Wendigo. So, if it were me, how would you know which it was? Was someone controlling me, or...or did I lose control? What if this is all my fault, dammit?!

[That cup of coffee? Dylas backhands it, sending it to shatter against the wall. He seems like he's ready to blame himself for this—is there anything about the crime scene that can tell which is more likely, him losing control or him being controlled?]

A Wendigo.

[Ales sounds out that unfamiliar word. In a world with no humans, Wendigos were not a known legend. They had their own horror stories about cannibalism, but this one flies over Ales' head. Figuratively, in this case.]

Maybe both? We don't know if someone prodded you into breaking or if they tried to control your powers, but....

[IS Dylas even listening? Ales glares at the spot where the coffee mug hit the wall in disdain. There really is no need to be upset about mind control. What was so bad about killing some people you didn't know?]

Either way, you're no more than partially to blame.

[No one should have let Ales talk to someone in emotional distress.]

[Sparks grumbles. Another lost coffee cup. Please Dylas, Sparks needs all of those in these trying times.

Sparks looks to Ales, thinking something over.]

There's gotta be a way to set off someone's limit break. Right? A spell, a potion, a Job ability...

[More notes are shuffled through. He's got the scoop on some Jobs from the labs in here.]

Of course I'd be the one to blame, dammit. If it's all true, it..it doesn't matter if someone controlled me, it just means I'm weak.

[But where did the blade come from? He looks down at his hands. If he'd attacked three people, they'd be slashed up, probably even bitten, but no one's mentioned that. He's still not 100% sure he's the culprit, he just needs to know how he could have summoned a blade.]

I thought I was done. I thought I was done with all of this.

[Sure you're weak, buddy. Those giant claws of yours sure proves that.

It's taking a lot for Ales to hold back on the snark. He has theories on how Dylas got hold of a blade: mastermind handed it to him, he dropped it into the sewers...there's a lot that mind control wipes out.]

Look, Dylas. Would you mind explaining what you mean by being done? Is there something we have to keep in mind?

[Killing. Lots of killing. For reasons he couldn't control, too. He suddenly doesn't want to look at anyone in the room, not even Koporo. If he's not cuffed to the table, he'll even kick to turn his chair away from them. The things he's done...Sparks reminds him of it the most. Is the table scratch resistant? Because if it's not, he's dragging his claws down it.

Being a vampire, they don't make a sound.]

...It doesn't matter. I did it. I killed them.
