Gen CR Hospital

WHO: Rialynn Kollmann, Ruby Rose, Ellana Lavellan, Tear Grants, Albel
WHAT: Wedge assigns several Heroes to keep an eye on the comatose ~~Darth Tater~~ Palitutu to soothe the nerves of the hospital staff. Nothing eventful happens......EXCEPT FOR AMAZING CR!
WHEN: Throughout the month of September
WHERE: Aqures Ixen Hospital

Considering the runs of bad luck the hospital faced since Halloween of the previous year, it was understandable that they'd be more than a little nervous at having Palitutu safely sleeping in the intensive care unit. If the Heroes were anxious about her waking up and blowing the city to smithereens, imagine how much more fearful the non-job-wielding staff members had to be.

But despite their unease, Palitutu remained safely locked away in a coma, sustained by the IV unit hooked up to her small arm. It was almost hard to believe someone so small had posed such an enormous threat all by herself.

"A song for my Bard job," she replied slowly, her attention focused on the paper as she finished her line. Once she did, she lifted her head and grinned. "Apparently we can craft our own songs and imbue them with effects. It's tricky, but I'm enjoying the challenge." Rialynn laid her pen down, idly scratching the tip of her nose (and leaving a smear of black ink on the side). She could write song lyrics any day, but chances to talk to her fellow Heroes were far more rare. Ellana seemed nice enough, and as she was newly arrived, she probably didn't harbor any grudges against Rialynn for what she'd been made to do to Zelda.

"What jobs did you start out with?" she asked, waving her hand over the pages to let the ink dry. "Are they similar to what you were able to do in your own world?"

Rialynn would be right that the other held no grudge against her. Though she may not be all that sure of the why.

"Well, it would be a bit odd if you couldn't..." Ellana teased, a hint of a smile crossing her lips. She had fond memories of bards back home, one of which was her more trusted advisor. Noticing the smear, she moved to offer her handkerchief, suppressing a laugh. "Also you have some ink on your nose."

With the amount of times she accidentally caught others with the selfsame mark over her time as inquisitor, she could have paid for a horse. Though at the question, she shrugs faintly. "Summoner and Illusionist. I can't say the latter was familiar at all, but I had the knowledge of summoning spirits before awakening here. However such an act has a grave consequence in my world for both spirit and mage, so I can't say it was all that familiar save for academical purposes."

"What?! Oh, thanks, heh heh!" She gratefully accepted the handkerchief, squeezing her eyes shut as she licked her thumb, brushed it over her nose, and rubbed at it vigorously with the cloth. "That happens all the time, I think my friends gave up on telling me about it." She leaned back on the stool to check her warped reflection in the metal pitcher of ice water, turning her head to make sure there was nothing amiss. If Ramza was going to walk her home after his shift tonight, then she didn't want to meet him with black smears all over her face.

"Thank you," she folded the handkerchief and passed it back. She should really look into keeping one of those handy for herself.

Summoner and Illusionist...that combined into an advanced job, didn't it? She raised her brows, then quickly leafed through her journal until she found her notes. Oh, that was right. Psychic. That seemed like it would be useful, especially once Ellana was able to communicate with her mind and fly. Rialynn looked up from her notes with a grin. "That's lucky, you got a good combination with that one." And wow, summoning spirits? Ellana had the bard's full attention now, as she'd scooted herself around to face her directly.

"What kind of consequences?" she asked, curious. "You never had to summon one, then? Or was there a brief exception?"

"You and I both," Ellana admitted, chuckling to herself. Accepting her handkerchief back, she couldn't help but remain amused at the other's antics and curiosity. "Once I almost went to judge a prisoner only to be stopped by one of my advisors because I had a smear on my ear."

Perhaps before she caught the next airship to Esdham, she'd get a time to wash the cloth.

"So I'm told," she smiled politely, though it didn't quite reach her eyes. "I never had nor wished to. If anything, I sent spirits back to their reality. Mages are especially susceptible to the influence of spirits, thus I was trained since I was young that the risks were not worth the cost." Pausing for a moment, she glanced at their unconscious charge before looking to meet Rialynn's gaze. "An external summoning, if the spirit is forced to comply by the mage's demands, can corrupt them into a demon if it goes against their nature. An internal summoning can corrupt the mage themselves, along with the spirit if the mage's intentions corrupt its sentience. There's only one case I know of that didn't lead to tragedy."

She remembers what they spoke of another mage who was raised in the Circle... one who wasn't as lucky as her to have a spirit to ask those questions to, or her boyfriend who knew much more about the Beyond.

"You're kidding...!" Rialynn drew in her breath in a slow gasp. Her shoulders jerked as an involuntary shiver danced over her spine. Demons possessing a person's body against their will was truly terrifying...moreso after Narasimha's brief reign of terror concluded. Needless to say, she wasn't going to be telling anymore tales of that nature during her performances for a very long time.

"Is there a way to prevent it? A certain herb, or a...a charm, a circle of salt... I mean, if it always ends so poorly, why would anyone even want to try?"

It made no sense to her, but then again, she wasn't nearly as accustomed to fighting supernatural entities as most people drawn to this world seemed to be.

"Vigilance, unfortunately, was the only preventative measure I knew of that was widely accepted. Whatever other alternative existed was lost with the fall of my People over a thousand years ago." Something which was no end of grief for her, being the one who would have taken over leadership of her clan were it not for, well...

Noting that shudder, she smiled faintly. "Desperate times has always led man down a self-destructive path for desperate measures. I myself befriended a spirit of Compassion, however, but that was because he approached to warn of an incoming attack.

"What about you? Did you have any experiences in your world that helped you with your Jobs?"

She was absorbed in Ellana's story, leaning forward onto her knees as she listened. Questions were already queueing up in her mind, as the little details hinted at other fascinating lines of conversation. Who were her People? Was she elven, or Hylian? How could a spirit of Compassion possibly cause someone to go bad, and why didn't more people bond mutually...?

But when the question was turned back to Rialynn, she blinked, sitting back in her chair in surprise. People didn't usually ask her questions about herself. Usually she was reluctant to relay any personal details, but... This was about being a bard, so she supposed there was no harm in answering.

"Yes and no?" she shrugged, grinning. "No one has any magic or supernatural power in my world. Everyone is pretty ordinary, truth be told. I was a bard by trade...hence my reluctance in taking up a job where the songs and dances were imbued with actual magic. I was worried I might negatively affect my audience." Her eyes twinkled as her grin grew wider. "It takes some getting used to. Anyway, if you don't mind me asking, who were your people?"

"Most people I know would be envious to hear of a world like that," she replied, a bit amused. She herself, well, she prefers the way things were,if they couldn't get any better. Something she wished she could return to doing, it at all honesty.

"The elves, or rather, what remains of us." She didn't personally like discussing this topic as much as others of her kind did, but she could at least answer that much. "I myself am of the dalish clan Lavellan."

Rialynn laughed sheepishly. It had been an enormous shock to move from a world of superstitions to a world of supernatural proportions. Magic, monsters, giant living seas of crystal... Yeah, she kind of preferred the relative normality of her home too.

She nodded enthusiastically at Ellana's response. "I've heard of elves before. They're popular legends where I'm from, though, the stuff of stories. It's kind of amazing to sit here and talk with one so freely. Kind of nice, too," she smiled, resting her cheek in her hand. "I didn't know you had clans, though. How many clans are there?"

"You do realize there is a similar race native to this world--elezen, I believe?" She raised an eyebrow. Part of her wondered if the other spoke to any of the 'elezen' in this world as well. "There are many of us, though forgive me if I ere on the side of discretion. We are a proud people, and any knowledge that survived the centuries is precious to us."

Yet despite her response, she smiles faintly. "It likely isn't the same among different worlds, however. So I can't speak for all elves everywhere."

Consider yourself lucky, she's one of the nice ones.

"Oh, no, I wouldn't assume that much!" Rialynn quickly waved her free hand. "And it's hard sometimes to ask people about themselves without seeming nosy, or phrasing it in a way that comes across as condescending or offensive. If I ask or say anything ignorant, feel free to let me know. I promise, it's not my intention."

She turned her head, as if to look off in the direction of Mysidia, and nodded. "I spoke to a few when I could. Bangaa and Moombas too. It makes me wonder if humans are called different things in different worlds."

Rialynn leaned onto her book, shifting her jaw thoughtfully. "The elves of legend in my world are supposed to be ageless beings who can live for centuries and still look young. They're supposed to be wise and influential over the powers of nature. But as far as I know, they're just stories. Nobody's ever seen one, so..." She shrugs a little. "But I don't think humans are the only intelligent beings in the land. Better to exercise a little superstition than be wrong and eaten by a werewolf or something."

No offense, werewolves.

"I will be sure to let you know." It's an odd, and refreshing, change of pace for Ellana, who in turn waves it off until Rialynn speaks once more. Oh yes, they definitely called different things, though she would likely never aim the term at her new acquaintance. The legend, however...

"That's--" oddly specific, she almost said, before redirecting the conversation slightly. "Different races in Thedas have different words for each other, though none would be said in polite company. Then again, humans there aren't used to seeing elves of high rank in society..."

So speaking as an equal, albeit even as a bit of a mutual curiosity, is something she appreciated more than she'd say. She almost missed the friendly debates back home already. "Also the werewolves would attack, but rarely eat mortal flesh. Though that may just be one instance."

She may be smirking. Just a tad.

"You really had werewolves?" Rialynn asked after a slow, drawn out gasp. "That's so scary!" At least they didn't eat people...most of the time?! Probably no more than people became psychopathic degenerates and ate other people, she supposed.

She shivered. These were unpleasant thoughts for a quiet hospital room where Palitutu was sleeping in a heavy coma.

"I think I just gave myself goosebumps," she half-laughed, her nerves showing. "What else was there? I mean, different monsters, different races, things like that."

"Yes. Granted, I've never met one in person, nor do I care to. Though perhaps this discussion is best served elsewhere?" She can see that it was actually doing more than giving goosebumps, and for as much as her kind love to torment their oppressors, this girl was not one of them.

Alas, they were on duty... so she sits down in another chair nearby. Perhaps later they could share spooky stories. Like that holiday she's seen decorations go up for lately.

"The most common race is human, but aside from them and elves... dwarves and qunari are the only known races of Thedas." Monsters could be saved for later.

Rialynn flashed a quick but grateful smile. She'd honestly prefer to talk about monsters in a nice public space. With sunshine. And blue skies and singing birds and rainbows and flowers. It wasn't that she didn't want to talk about it -- if she didn't, then she wouldn't learn how to best protect herself and prevent unwanted encounters. She lined all of the windows of her home with salt already, just in case.

She nodded at the humans, the elves, and the dwarves...but blinked at the mention of qunari, as that was a term she hadn't heard before. Interested, she scooted closer to the edge of her stool. "I've heard of dwarves, but no qunari. What are they like? Have you met any before?"

"One of my inner circle and drinking buddy was, actually," she replied, a faint smile crossing her lips. Ahh, the stories they shared. "Though I'm very unfamiliar with their culture, so I can't really say what they are like as a people. Only what he deigned to share.

"The less polite term most called them in the south were 'ox-men'. They are a big, proud people; stubbornly set in their ways because they otherwise fear their 'violent' nature without their teachings."

Her head jerked up sharply as she stared for a moment. "...Ox-men?" That caused her a little uncertainty. But surely they couldn't be as bad as her instincts warned. They weren't lizard-men, and those with horns weren't necessarily wicked demons. Ellana had said that the one she knew was a close friend and enjoyed a good drink. That sounded like any other human man to her.

"Oo, I see," she nodded. "How did he come to join your cause?" At least, Rialynn assumed he was a member of Ellana's party that went adventuring into the wilderness and cities to save the world from a great evil.

Unfortunately the Qunari did not have as good a reputation amongst those in the south, so she may be admittedly biased. Though she keeps it nice and simple to leave out some details.

"He was ordered to," she replied simply. "Though he stayed on when his country asked he sacrifice his people 'for the greater good'."

Rialynn's mouth opened. It closed. It was just one sentence, and was missing a lot of detail, but even so.

"...What?"

How many people were supposed to be sacrificed? What purpose equated to 'the greater good'? Were they saved once he joined the group? She didn't understand any of it, so the one-word question pretty much summed up all of her confusion.
