Monster Hunters

WHO: Rialynn Kollmann, OPEN
WHAT: There are at least two monsters Rialynn needs to go after: a Sahagin, and a friggin' Dragon. This log serves double duty to let her go after both.
WHEN: December, 2016 (exact dates are flexible)
WHERE: Calm Plains, Mysidian Continent

The Calamity hadn't yet really covered their continent, which meant if Rialynn wanted to fight a Sahagin and pick up its Mighty Guard ability (which might help a lot when she went up against her second target), she had to travel pretty far south. The others could ride chocobos if they liked, but she was going to stick to her trusty brown mare. The horse clopped sturdily through the snow-covered plains, puffs of breath misting from its nostrils as they scoured the wintery landscape for trouble.

Oddly enough, Rialynn seemed far more scared of the common Geezard than anything else they encountered on the excursion, pulling harshly back on the reins and wheeling her horse far away from the thing. Why?

Because the last thing she wanted was to have Splash take up a vital spot on her list of Blue Mage abilities.

But at long last, it appeared they were on the right track when they came upon a smear of crimson-stained snow, and several half-buried sahagin bodies. One of the tridents they traditionally wielded was sticking up at a haphazard angle, planted into a leafless tree. Their killer wasn't far away. A bigger Sahagin, girded in glittering shards of crystal, was bent over one of its fallen companions and eating its flesh, the corpse jerking fitfully as the Calamity monster bit down and savagely yanked out another bite.

It was a sickening sight. Rialynn carefully slid down out of her saddle and glanced at her other companions. This was it.

Instead of wielding her fiddle, she drew her rapier and started to softly hum the first bars of the Nameless Song. Her voice was almost lost in the howling winter winds, but she persisted. And as she was able to sing two songs at once, thanks to the Troubadour skill, the melody elegantly wove in the chorus of the Battle Song to raise everyone's stats.

* * * * *

Any true fairy tale fanatic loved a good story that featured dragons. They were fantastic, enchanting creatures, powerful and cunning. They were the perfect villains in any story, abducting princesses and giving knights a challenge that seemed impossible only for the hero to overcome and save the kingdom.

She was nervous, but profoundly excited too, as anyone could see by the occasional giddy smile that worked its way onto the bard's face.

They weren't easy to find, and the trek through the Mysidian jungles to find one (let alone the Calamity version!) wasn't easy. But once they did manage to spot one, there could be absolutely no mistake as to what it was. Rialynn took a deep breath, shaking out her wrists and limbering up before drawing her rapier.

"First things first..." she murmured, keeping her eyes locked on their opponent that wheeled in the sky above them. They'd need to get its attention to bring it down to their level, but she wanted to make sure they were absolutely ready to survive whatever it had to throw at them. She cast Mighty Guard to double their speed and all of their defenses, as she was sure they'd need it. "Once it comes down I'll need to start singing to give us more defenses as well as Regen and Haste. Get ready!"

Naminé is more than willing to take up the White Mage job for this fight. She's loathe to see any of her friends get hurt, but the thought of it being necessary to take a hit by a monster to learn a new skill is especially horrifying. She just hopes that she'll be able to help with only half of job's spells in her arsenal.

She closes her eyes and listens to Rialynn's songs, trying to let that calm her nerves, then raises a hand to cast Protect and Shell over her friend before turning to do the same for the other fighters.

Dragon Fight

[Keith squinted up at the dragon circling above. Somehow fighting giant monsters was a little more nerve wracking when he wasn't doing it from the inside of a giant mechanical lion. Still, he was a paladin and a Hero of Light. It was his duty to defend this world from monsters. Besides, if he didn't get out and actually start fighting for real he'd never get the chance to improve. It also helped that he at least somewhat knew his partner from the disastrous meeting in the square. He had to make up somehow for his moogles awkward flirting. He supposed fighting a dragon would do it.]

No time like the present.

[With careful practice he switched the gun to shoot ice bullets and took careful aim. It wasn't quite like firing a Garrison rifle, more point and hope it worked, but if Lance (the real one) could do it then so could he. He lined up the dragon in his cross hairs, took a careful breath in as he focused his magic and then fired on the exhale, sending a screaming streak of blue at the circling beast.]
