Monster Hunters
WHO: Rialynn Kollmann, OPEN
WHAT: There are at least two monsters Rialynn needs to go after: a Sahagin, and a friggin' Dragon. This log serves double duty to let her go after both.
WHEN: December, 2016 (exact dates are flexible)
WHERE: Calm Plains, Mysidian Continent
The Calamity hadn't yet really covered their continent, which meant if Rialynn wanted to fight a Sahagin and pick up its Mighty Guard ability (which might help a lot when she went up against her second target), she had to travel pretty far south. The others could ride chocobos if they liked, but she was going to stick to her trusty brown mare. The horse clopped sturdily through the snow-covered plains, puffs of breath misting from its nostrils as they scoured the wintery landscape for trouble.
Oddly enough, Rialynn seemed far more scared of the common Geezard than anything else they encountered on the excursion, pulling harshly back on the reins and wheeling her horse far away from the thing. Why?
Because the last thing she wanted was to have Splash take up a vital spot on her list of Blue Mage abilities.
But at long last, it appeared they were on the right track when they came upon a smear of crimson-stained snow, and several half-buried sahagin bodies. One of the tridents they traditionally wielded was sticking up at a haphazard angle, planted into a leafless tree. Their killer wasn't far away. A bigger Sahagin, girded in glittering shards of crystal, was bent over one of its fallen companions and eating its flesh, the corpse jerking fitfully as the Calamity monster bit down and savagely yanked out another bite.
It was a sickening sight. Rialynn carefully slid down out of her saddle and glanced at her other companions. This was it.
Instead of wielding her fiddle, she drew her rapier and started to softly hum the first bars of the Nameless Song. Her voice was almost lost in the howling winter winds, but she persisted. And as she was able to sing two songs at once, thanks to the Troubadour skill, the melody elegantly wove in the chorus of the Battle Song to raise everyone's stats.

Any true fairy tale fanatic loved a good story that featured dragons. They were fantastic, enchanting creatures, powerful and cunning. They were the perfect villains in any story, abducting princesses and giving knights a challenge that seemed impossible only for the hero to overcome and save the kingdom.
She was nervous, but profoundly excited too, as anyone could see by the occasional giddy smile that worked its way onto the bard's face.
They weren't easy to find, and the trek through the Mysidian jungles to find one (let alone the Calamity version!) wasn't easy. But once they did manage to spot one, there could be absolutely no mistake as to what it was. Rialynn took a deep breath, shaking out her wrists and limbering up before drawing her rapier.
"First things first..." she murmured, keeping her eyes locked on their opponent that wheeled in the sky above them. They'd need to get its attention to bring it down to their level, but she wanted to make sure they were absolutely ready to survive whatever it had to throw at them. She cast Mighty Guard to double their speed and all of their defenses, as she was sure they'd need it. "Once it comes down I'll need to start singing to give us more defenses as well as Regen and Haste. Get ready!"

sahagin fight
She closes her eyes and listens to Rialynn's songs, trying to let that calm her nerves, then raises a hand to cast Protect and Shell over her friend before turning to do the same for the other fighters.

Rialynn moved to the left and slightly forward to force the monster to pay more attention to her, gesturing for Naminé to go right. "Whatever happens, you have to keep your distance," Rialynn warned with a nervous flick of her gaze toward Naminé before focusing back on the Sahagin. "I can go invincible whenever I need to, so just...keep me alive as best you can in case it gets a lucky hit."
The monster lunged at the bard with incredible speed and Rialynn nearly lost her footing as she immediately invoked Spoony Bard. It hit her with enough force to throw her backward, but where there should have been several deep lacerations or even bruises, Rialynn got back up to her feet...and extended her rapier in challenge.
Again it charged her, bowling her over and driving her back, but there was still no blood to be spilled. It was starting to get frustrated.

When there seems to be a good opening for it, she casts Prayer. Rialynn doesn't look tired, but she needs all the advantage she can get-- and hopefully the random buff will be helpful to her as well. Once the spell is done, Naminé ducks away to stay out of the Sahagin's line of sight.

Or at least, that's what it should have done.
She braced herself for the impact, not knowing fully what to expect. The hit struck her hard enough to bowl her off of her feet and send her tumbling across the snow. It hurt like mad, but she wasn't bleeding. 'Virtually' invincible, the guide had said.
The Prayer did help in easing some of the discomfort, as well as increasing her magical defense. Well. That was the case with randomization, she supposed. It might come in handy later. She rolled to her feet, clumps of snow tumbling from her clothes as she countered with her rapier, turning her body to the side to make herself a smaller target. If she was attacking, then she wasn't entirely spoony, so she had to switch quickly between offense and defense. with a lunge she stabbed the point of her sword into the monster before snapping it quickly back, resuming the Spoony Bard. Angered, it tried to strike her again, but with the Haste of the Nameless Song, she was able to withstand the blow and attack it again.
It might wind up being a long, grueling fight at this rate, but she had to at least force it to activate its Mighty Guard ability. So far, it hadn't taken note of Naminé, intensely focused on the irritating human that refused to bleed.

Naminé chews on her bottom lip, her eyes flicking between woman and monster as they continue their dangerous back and forth. Cure spells won't help Rialynn when there aren't any actual wounds to heal, so she decides to cast another Prayer when she's able to. She wants to save her energy if she has to use several Curas in succession, should Rialynn get hit, but maybe the spell will give an offensive buff this time around. It's the only thing she can think of that will help Rialynn force the Sahagin's hand.

She skidded across the snow as the Sahagin thrust the tines of its enormous trident at her, running awkwardly as she did her best to avoid the deeper drifts of snow that would only serve to slow her down. It still wasn't activating its ability, and until it did, her chances of dealing any significant damage remained minimal.
So, when all else failed? Psych it out.
"Eat Thundaga, ugly!" she shouted, pulling back her fist and tensing her muscles until her arm began to shake. "HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"
Hexagons of light double-plated over the crystal-studded beast as it narrowed its eyes at Rialynn with a scaly smile. And just like that, the knowledge filtered into Rialynn's head, her crystal flaring with a warm light. Mighty Guard had been learned!
"Got it!" she crowed triumphantly, and flung a ball of snow at the creature's face. It snorted in surprise, shaking it off as Rialynn invoked Mognet Central to switch to her Gunner job. It wasn't yet at maximum potential, but it meant she could shoot the Sahagin and run away until it finally dropped.
But first things first. She cast Mighty Guard over herself and Naminé, just in case the situation soured for whatever reason. The Sahagin was faster now, but so were they, and the playing field remained...mostly equal? Unchanged, at least. She backpedaled furiously, plugging the creature's face full of bullets.
Her luck wouldn't hold up forever. As she was firing, the sahagin returned fire with a sudden gushing jetstream of water powered out of its mouth. There was no time to go spoony, and the bard was blasted across the snow, hitting a protruding rock with an unsettling crunch.
