It must have been something in them, those soldier-types, that instinctively shot a strong arm out sideways from themselves once their own balance had bent with the crumbling of the garden into platforms. Whomever was on Sephiroth's right side at the time could well have been prevented from falling or stumbling any closer to the edge of that particular chunk of rock they found themselves on.
At the same time, Masamune was turned so that the back of the blade might act a little like a barrier spreading out from his left-side as well. It was almost as if he held arms outward like wings -albeit one side with a seven-foot extension- to protect as many as would have found themselves behind him.
Once the platforms were adrift above the abyss below, Sephiroth then cast a long-glance around; particularly at the nearest other platforms and assessing the situation. What one wouldn't give to be able to fly right now...
To press the attack further would require well-timed leaps from one platform to another, and just maybe he'd be able to get close enough to extend an attack to the colossus of the Calamity-Bahamut.
It wasn't until the others on his platform were more stable on their feet that he'd make his move, and such precious timing, leaping with as much of his mako-like energy across a small part of the dragon. Using a Power Break to both attack and provide the boost needed for Sephiroth to make it to the next platform, just a little lower than the one he'd leaped from.
