Preparing for things to come.

Where: Aqures Ixen
When: June 29th – July 5th
Summary: Zelda isn’t one for war but she’s going to start practicing and thinking of strategies. She knows that there will be a meeting but she doesn’t want to attend empty handed. She is also on a look out for new heroes. It’s a bad time for them to show up which makes her think that they will.
Warning: None.

Zelda was always busy and with the threat of war she was even busier. She was coming up with plans using the city map as a guide. It would be better to use the cities natural strengths during the fight, such as preexisting walls, but it’s clear that this city wasn’t made to withstand a war. The best they could do was guess where the Empire might focus their attention and so Zelda made a list.

1.) Jessie’s Lab
2.) The Hospital
3.) The Fire Crystal
4.) The Castle
5.) The Old Observatory
6.) The old Magitek Research Facility
7.) Mognet Office
8.) Airship Port

There were other possible areas too but she didn’t think they’d attack schools or homes. They couldn’t chance leaving areas unprotected but she supposed they could put a concentration of people around specific points. There were a few locations that worried her more than others. She didn’t know if they should move the heroes in stasis or if they should focus around the crystal of fire. It would really help if they knew what the Empire was after.

She worked late into the evening, pouring over notes and making scribbles and plans on small pieces of paper.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

She was planning to fight and while her skills lay primarily in wit she wasn’t a stranger to brute strength. She thought of changing her jobs back to the skills she had mastered but she knew that Link wouldn’t want her on the front lines. Instead she practiced with the bow that he had made for her: aiming, firing, and then fetching the five arrows she was using for practice.

Zelda could be found practicing in a few places. Right outside the town was the most common. She could aim at trees or things around her without the possibly of hitting a foolish passerby. She could also be found right outside the Observatory, pass the garden that she had create and along the back of the building. She set up a small firing range with a few straw looking dummies at the opposite end. They weren’t perfect but they let her practice without destroying any arrows.

She could also be found using her illusionist skills such as duplicating herself. This would be the easiest way for her to help from afar and she hoped that she could think of ways to use these skills in a larger scale battle. She couldn’t help but wonder how well the Heroes of Light would ban together. She remembered the first time they all fought. It was in the Chocobo Ranch and it hadn’t gone very well at all but since then people have grown and changed. New heroes have arrived and they found a purpose.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Along with everything else Zelda was on the look out to see if new heroes would arrive. This was a constant duty that she gave herself but with war looming she decided to keep her eyes and ears out more so. It would be a perfectly awful time for the heroes to awake which made her think that they would. She also had no idea where they would show up which weighed heavily on her thoughts.

End of June, just outside town.

One morning, Manami headed out of town on his bike at a relatively idle speed. He yawned into his hand and breathed deep of the morning air. It was going to be a nice day!

Just outside town, he saw a really funny sight! It was a whole bunch of Zelda-san! At first he was surprised, but after a moment the truth came to him easily- she must be using Illusionist skills.

With a grin he stopped his bike while still some distance away and concentrating made ten copies of his moogle Tia appear all around Zelda's copies.

Heh, didn't phase her one bit! (Maybe next time he'd try surrounding her with monster-illusions~)

Whoa, you know how to cut to the heart of the matter, Zelda-san.

With a self-effacing grin he let all of his illusions fade too. Pedaling slowly, he came closer to where she was.

"Haa. I don't think I want to stay for a war, really... Killing monsters is one thing, but other people..."

He glances away. The person he'd hurt in the facility... Manami still thought about it, sometimes.

"And I guess you're staying!" Otherwise she wouldn't be training so hard.

"Mmm~ By the sounds of things, no where will be safe for long, will it." It's hard even appearing light-hearted about it. No matter how much he didn't want to think about it, the world was literally ending, and that was something he'd never imagined having to face.

"Heh, but sure! I'll take some things with me! As long as it's not that table at the Observatory. That's huge! I can't carry that." He grins despite his serious tone- he's mostly kidding!

"Ohh? You might want to give it to someone taller than me, then."

(Why 'taller' and not 'stronger'? No explanation.)

"But no worries, Zelda-san. I can take your notes and crystals."

Manami then tilted his head questioningly. "What kind of crystals?" This world seemed to have a lot of different kinds- the ones all the Heroes had, the ones for jobs like Illusionist, the one was trying to eat up the world.

"Is one of them an Illusionist-- ah, no, I must have asked you that already." His briefly hopeful expression faded, but then, it didn't matter too much if he got the Illusionist crystal or not now.

"Really? Haha, all right! It's a deal! That'll be loads easier than what Elizabeth-san asked."

And besides that, well, he felt like he was now almost strong enough to legitimately use something so powerful. Maybe Elizabeth's quest had been so hard because his experience had been so low then! That's how it worked in video games, after all.

"Are you using that crystal now, too?" If Zelda was more experienced at Illusionist, it might be a good chance to see how it works!
vindr: (how curious tell me more)

"...Absorbed?" Manami will look properly surprised at that. That sounds... really weird! But, well, that's magic for you?

"Oh? Yah, if you don't practice you lose strength really fast! It's too bad, isn't it! So is that why you're practicing this now? Can you show me something using the skill the crystal gave you?"

Learning by example always goes better for him~

Manami's breath caught as darkness surrounded them, but his face broke into a wide smile at the vista abruptly before him.

Turning his face into the wind he laughed, taking it all in.

"This is great, Zelda-san! It's so real!" Recognizing the birds, his eyes followed them through the sky. This is her home, isn't it. Pretty nice of her, to show him this!

"How big is it?" He meant the illusion, but he kind of wondered how big this floating island place was too.

Manami looked down as Zelda explained the boundaries of the illusion. Wow, it didn't seem like they were still standing on the plain outside the city. He scuffed his shoe against the stone, and it seemed real enough. Yep, could see how that'd be dangerous to walk too far!

“When I can make something like this, I'll make Hakone!” It's natural to do something like that, right! He missed the mountain.

“Haha, it's like being a real magician! You could make a whole airplane disappear and reappear, or cut someone in half without the box, and no one would ever know how you did it!”

[personal profile] vindr 2015-07-09 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'll show it to you when I get the crystal then!" He'll be happy to show off Hakone!

"And magicians, well, I could show you that too! Most of the time it's card tricks and rabbits out of hats and handkerchiefs turning into birds and sawing people in half, but I saw it on TV! This guy made something bigger than one of your birds" he pointed to the loftwings in the sky, then fanned out his hands in a dramatic gesture, "disappear!"

It's too bad when Zelda has to release the illusion, but he thinks he can understand how it'd be tiring to hold something that big!

"Nah, magicians are all tricks. No people get harmed in the making of their illusions. If it does happen, then something went wrong!"

Manami smiled at the offer, but shook his head 'no'.

"I have my own, thanks!" He pointed down to where a white water bottle was resting in a bracket on his bike.

"So, I guess I'll..." Mounting his bike again he set one foot into the bracket on the pedal, but hesitated to be on his way. Instead, he turned back to Zelda.

...

Then he faced away again. "Ah, well..." He set his foot back on the ground and sat back on the saddle.

After another moment he faced her again.

"Zelda-san, you've always given me really good answers when I've asked you stuff. Can I ask you something again?"

This 'talking seriously' thing was a bit foreign to him, so it took him a moment longer to form the words.

"I heard it... The Heroes are brought here, and sacrificed..." he paused a moment, thinking of the 'other' Fukutomi, "and the two-thousand year cycle has still continued so many times." He thought of the strange clock that the man had shown with the year. He still couldn't process it.

"... What... what could happen differently this time? Aren't we already caught? You said... our souls could be in two places, but I want to return..."

Return. Escape here. Get to the end of this story already. Go home. It chaffed. Being a warrior was exciting like nothing he'd experienced before, but in the end... he was just a kid for whom wars were too large but the path up a mountainside was just right.

"Zelda-san..." Nothing is forever? "Heh, when you say it, I feel like it's true."

And although it was a bit bitter, he appreciated that she didn't bother giving false hope.

"I suppose I'll try my best too, even if it's just keeping your notes and crystals safe."

Manami glanced away for a moment, thoughtful again.

"Say, has anyone figured out what it means that we carry a part of the Calamity with us?"

His tone was light, as if this were an afterthought, but it was something that troubled him too.
