"Fewer than you'd expect." She shook her head. "My role is only that of a messenger. I accomplish very little, I only serve as a medium for the will of others."

Finally letting the comfortable silence end, she spoke once more. "Do not discount your role, then. I have seen a single word, a single change in inflection, by a messenger change a supplication into a taunt, a request into a demand, or a proposal into a threat. such things can shatter or build empires."
Rose finally turned to look at the other woman's face and said, "Even if you discount that, something tells me you know the shape of what is being woven here."

She remained silent as Rose looked at her and claimed she knew the shape of what was being woven. She finally did turn and looked at her.
"You, however, do." She closed her eyes, "And this is why I have to show you."

Rose raised one eyebrow and gave the woman before her the same look she used to give her grandkids when they were trying to get clever.
"Couldn't you have shown whatever you need to show by coming over for tea instead all this?"
