Das Friendly Monster

WHO: Cloud, Shining, Sonic
WHAT: Heading out for monster hunting, and they come across a Cait Sith
WHEN: November 9th
WHERE: Calm Plains

When Shining Armor found out that monsters dropped money, he was all over it.

Armed with what little he had, he set out, after sending a letter to interested parties. He had gotten two responses back.

"What ho, friendly adventurers! Are we all set to have some fun?" exclaimed Shining, really getting into his Dungeon Master persona.

Dice groaned as he grinned. "So yeah, I'm Shining, and thanks for accepting my request. I'd like to head a little deeper into the Calm Plains for a bit. Is that all right?"

Sonic didn't flinch at all at the talking pony, though he tried his best not to wince at Shining's earlier speak. With a grin and a thumbs up, he replied. "Eh, it's not a problem at all! Something a little on the laid back side would be great after everything we've been through!"

Cloud was giving Shining a bit of an odd look, but it wasn't entirely about the way the pony was talking. It wasn't even about the fact that he WAS talking. That hurdle had already been jumped when they first met, and rather quickly as well. It was just a talking animal after all.

No, the thing that was still distracting Cloud was that he was still wrapping his mind around this "horse" thing. Shining and Twilight were certainly different than Spark's horse Comet, but even so they just seemed...odd to him.

He pushed it from his mind and adjusted his shield. It felt good to be back on his Paladin job. "Uh, yeah, sure. Whatever you say...You...can't ride a Chocobo though, right?"

"I haven't even gotten a Chocobo, but I'm pretty fast on my hooves," replied Shining with a easy grin.

"We all set? Then lets head out. The southern gate, right?"

Shining Armor was eager to get things going, no matter what anyone said about it.

"All ready to go!" Sonic replied, though hearing Cloud's question, he couldn't help but chuckle. "If he can ride one, it'll be quite the sight. Stallion-ception. Or something!"

"Uh, yeah, I guess so...." Cloud looked at Sonic, then to Shining, and then back to Sonic. He just shook his head. This was pretty strange, but at least they were friendly and good additions to the Heroes here. He could put up with some oddity among friends.

He tugged on Zack's reins and then mounted up on his own chocobo. The bird too had been eyeing Shining for a while just as Cloud had.

"I hope you don't mind but the other job I have equipped is Dark Knight. I need to work on it a bit. The other job I'm using is Chocobo Knight and it's nearly mastered so if we get into trouble we should be okay." At the least he could cover a retreat.

"That sounds good to me," said Shining as he trotted out towards the gates of the city. "We should arrive in a half an hour if my skill with maps are any inclination."

"Hopefully when we arrive we won't run into any tough mobs."

"Pfft, Chocobos. That's why I like what I got now. Ninja plus Time Mage equals... well, not what I LIKE to have in place of my normal speed, but it'll do!" Sonic replied. Hey, if they were talking about their skills, then...!

"Sounds like a plan. Race you guys there!"

Cloud gave his companions a smile before patting Zack's neck. The Chocobo trilled and then without the need of any spurring from his rider they ran off across the fields. If the others thought they could keep up then Cloud wasn't going to doubt them. He was still proud of his bird plain and simple.

Surprisingly, Shining was pretty darn fast for being weighed down in armor, like he had done this once before. He wasn't quite as fast out the door but was soon keeping pace with the others in a nice gallop.

"Shouldn't be too long till we get to the Plains," he said with a grin.

Well, then! This was his kind of thing! Sonic was easily keeping pace, using both the Ninja's natural speed and Time Mage's Haste spell in tandem.

"Awesome! Hopefully there's something awesome waiting for us!"

Cloud grinned as the others kept along with him. Sonic was definitely putting on a good show and watching Shining run like this was helping Cloud to understand why people in other worlds used those "horse" things, if they were anything similar.

But he had faith in Zack and his speed and skill. All it took was a pat to the Chocobo's neck to spur him to go faster. They would reach their destination in no time.

(ooc: good to skip forward or whatever)

An hour later, they reached the Calm Plains and Shining took a moment to catch his breath. "Pretty good run," he said with a grin.

As he sat down and sipped his canteen, a rustling sound was heard. "Monsters already?"

"Not a monster that you want to fight, oh no, oh no, that would be a fright!" chimed a voice as a Cait Sith plopped out of the bushes with a roll.

"Trally hi and tralala lo, 2000 gil, please pay my toll?"

Sonic blinked as he saw the creature before them. "What in the...? A toll?"

He looked towards the others. "Know what he's talking about?"

Cloud frowned at the vaguely familiar sight of the monster. He knew a few things about his future and this was a particularly notable shape. But it definitely wasn't the Cait Sith from his world here.

"Um....I think some of the other Heroes mentioned running into some friendly monsters? Maybe it's one of those." His hand went to his belt. "I have some gil I could spare?"

"I have some... about... 900 I think? Anyone got anymore?" asked Shining, worried they couldn't pay the toll.

The Cait Sith seemed friendly enough. "No wait... found another 200 gil."

Sonic shrugged. "I got a lot left over. I haven't found much to spend here, so... what, at least 1000? I'm cool with it!"

Cloud looked through his own gilpurse and then smiled at Shining. "Put your money away. I think Sonic and I can cover this." A thousand gil wasn't small change to him, but there was no need to force the newbie to pay.

"You two..." Shining smiled and ducked his head in embarrassment. "Thanks you two. I just, this means a lot. I'll make it up to both of you. Promise."

"Oh oh, what bonds of friendship I see, to three who have been introduced such recently!" Exclaimed the Cait Sith. "With good fortune I accept your money, gil and all, and to your strengths, I bless the three of you, one and all!"
