Happy Birth-NOPE
Characters: Saori Nakagawa, Malik (for one locked prompt), and anyone else
When: June 12-June 15
Where: Aqures Ixen police HQ, the Space Saloon, and a private study room in the library.
Summary: Work, a meeting, and once again her moogle throws her under the bus.
Warnings: Mostly for possible language slips.
A. At the Police Station 12th-15th
[For once, Saori wasn't dodging paper work with field work. As she reviewed the newest documents from her in-tray, she twirled her pen in her left hand. After that meeting in Edsham, it's clear she's distracted. Considering what they had heard however, no one could really blame her. She leaned back into her chair and tossed the pen back on the desk. These are mostly petty crimes compared to the Calamity crawling up to their front steps. There had to be something they could do rather than running around like headless chocobos.]
[On the 15th, Saori came in with several tote bags in hand. It took her a while to go through as many of the rooms HQ had, passing out a small box. Anyone who's been working at the police force long enough knew this was one of her homemade lunches. Small meatballs with teriyaki-like sauce, stir-fried seasonal vegetables, and rice. While never super fancy, they had a homely feel only Saori could add. She even made one for her housemate Meredy. Little did everyone know, there was a reason for making lunch for today. ]
B.The Space Saloon, June 15th
[After a long day at work, a drink sounded great. She managed to get a seat at the counter and ordered up a beer. Just as she finished her first long sip, she heard an all too familiar voice.]
Saori there you are! C'mon aren't you gonna have some fun, kupo?
I'm fine where I am right now. [She took another long drink.]
No way, kupo! This is a special day for you!
[The redhead put down her glass and looked Brigid in the eye.]
Brigid, what are you...
[Her voice trailed off before she looked aghast at her fuzzball of a companion. Of course. Brigid was there when she was preparing lunch boxes for work the night before. She thought the moogle was too busy writing stuff in her notebook to notice. Oh no.]
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SAORI!
[The saloon went quiet as soon as she yelled it. Saori in the meantime just buried her head in her arms. ]
Please tell me this is the booze at work and not actually happening....

[Saori paced around the room, occasionally glancing at the door. She reserved one of the private study rooms in the library. Thankfully it was easy to get a room now that school was out. A few days ago, she had sent Malik mail asking to meet with him. Despite his assurance, Saori wasn't sure where her standing was among her fellow Assassin Initiatives. After the mission to retrieve the Diamond WEAPON, a few more questions regarding the state of the Assassin bureau gnawed at her.]

B
Ain't a problem. I shoulda asked around earlier about birthdays myself. [Oh well. That's why he's making one small thing instead of a large cake for everyone.] What's her favorite flavor of cake?
Re: B
Um, she likes green tea but that's a little hard to find here. Oh, but she like vanilla too, kupo!
[She flies in closer to watch as he works.]
I don't get it, Mr. Jiminy. How come some people don't want to celebrate their own birthday, kupo?
Re: B
As he measures the power from the bag, he keeps his gaze focused on his work.]
Could be that she feels birthday parties are more for kids, and I kinda agree on that. It's embarrassin', but it's a good day as any to show appreciation to a friend. [Sure, Saori must be mortified at the moment, but she'll appreciate it once dessert comes.] Or she doesn't want to think about gettin' older, that happens when you get to our ages.
...How old is she, anyway?
Re: B
Hmmm, I guess you have a point, kupo. She actually made lunches for everyone at the police station the night before. She seemed a lot more happier doing something for others than having the spot light turned on her.
[Her pom pom droops at her revelation. She only meant to cheer up her hero but it seemed to the do the opposite.]
Um...she definitely doesn't look her age. You won't believe it but if her file is correct, she'll be turning 99 this year, kupo. J-just don't tell her I said that. I kinda peaked before she locked it.
Re: B
[He reaches over for the butter and dumps a small cup into the mixing bowl. Then an egg, which he cracks with one hand and tosses the shells into the wastebasket.
...And freezes.]
99?! Are you serious?!
Re: B
That's what I thought too, kupo! But it's true! She technically did die when she was 27 but through some weird circumstances, she's alive again but with a longer life span. I think it has to with her being a goddess, kupo...
[Brigid please stop escalating the revelation bomb.]
Re: B
But when he thinks about it, didn't Croach also go through the same thing? He died and was revived by a Galaxium being, became imbued with the Force Galactic, and went around transporting people to the future like he was some kind of time god. Then he game those powers to Barkeep and now he's the one with these cosmic powers.
Does this make him a god?]
Hold on, who made her a goddess? Does she got some otherworldly being residin' inside her? 'Cause that's how it worked last time I saw it happen.
Re: B
[Biggest understatement of her world ever.]
She kinda became a disembodied soul sometime later, through some weird magic, she became a goddess. Still not sure if getting hitched was part of it or not...
Don't think there's a being residing in her because I would've noticed that by now, kupo. I mean she's not an all powerful type of god. She's technically a goddess of agriculture, tea, rice and a lot of things for just one culture. She just doesn't like bringing it up. Something about want others to judge her for what she does over what she is?
[She sits herself down nearby.]
no subject
[That is weird.]
Ain't no problem with havin' god powers. All that matters is how you use 'em. Get the eggs from the fridge, will ya?
[He adds the milk and butter to the bowl, all carefully measured and stirred so that not one drop will spill as he mixes them together.]
We all got our own powers, both here and on our home planets. Would be nice to know what her responsibilities are. I'll talk to her once work's over.
no subject
Yeah it might be better for her to explain than me. She'll probably get mad that I looked at her file in the first place but I just happened to be there when she locked her file. Doesn't help that I'm a fast reader by default, kupo.
no subject
[Oh well. He'll have to do it the old fashioned way: secondhand gossip.]
Probably shouldn't put that age with the icin' while we're in public. Think she'll stay behind after hours to chat?
[He takes an egg from the carton and cracks it on the edge of the bowl, then opens it with one hand and lets the contents fall into the bowl.]
