[Since they landed, Mary was doing her part to help the soldiers who had arrived with them. She wouldn't simply leave the work of disarming traps and subduing monsters to them alone. Eventually her path brings her back around to where Ramza is making his prayers. She stands by, letting him have his peace before he speaks up.]

It's been a good while since we last spoke, Sir Knight. I hope your heart is stronger now than it was back when you questioned your worth to carry your sword.

[For some reason their paths rarely crossed after that point. Their interaction was brief, if at all, but she'd always tried to keep an eye on him. She considers him the best of the Heroes, of what they intended to stand for. His is the light that casts the shadows she choses to hide in.

She wants him to be the Hero he seeks to be.]

[Ramza turned to Kidd, a little chagrined at her words. The rapier his father gave him was still in the hands of the thief, Gilgamesh. With the fate of the world threatened, there had never been a good time to retrieve it.]

Yes, I think it is. I have learned much since then, especially that I can do more to hinder wrongdoing with a good blade by my side than I can without one. [Monk skills notwithstanding. He still did not know if he was 'worthy' of the great king's blade he now held, but he would carry it in good faith that he would keep striving to be so. As long as he used it for good, he thought Arthur would not begrudge him its use.]

You'll not have to dig this sword from the trash heap. You have my word on that.

[She took his vow about his sword seriously, but she wasn't going to judge him on it. He'd get it back when the time came, whenever that might be. It wasn't like Gilgamesh played fair as she'd seen.

What mattered to her were the things he was able to do without it. If he wasn't who he was she might have tried to make an Assassin out of him. Delita might have been a fit if he were in this world. ]

Glad to hear it. I've no doubt it'll serve you well and you it. But what when this is all over? What will you do once it's truly time to make peace instead of war? Even if we destroy the Calamity this world and its people will still be wounded. And I'm sure you know what happens when there's no common enemy to be found.

[Ramza knew well the dangers of losing a common enemy. Ivalice had been in shambles when the war with their neighbors ended and the civil strife began.]

If I am not returned to Ivalice, I want to remain a police officer. The laws of this land are good. They are meant to protect the weak, not the ruling class, but they require officers who refuse corruption.

[He thought Mary would understand that. Her creed called for her to eliminate the corrupt. They both wanted to protect the people from their manipulators, just in different ways.]

[She nods approvingly, and she understands it well. There was always the chance of those who claimed to serve justice doing the opposite, but it was always wise to keep that Justice and the Throne separate from each other for the times that one stepped out of line.]

That's a good goal. Serve the people by being in service to them. If we remain here I may carry on as I have been...but if we can depart this world I think I'd like to go to Saori's.

[Her tone drifts near the end. Those are words she's said before but is only recently coming to really believe, thanks to her Shadow encounter.]

[He nodded. So many people searched for someone to love, and it was a blessing for those who found it.]

I hope you will be permitted to go. By Saori's side, you will never lack for food, nor for love. That is a goal worth conquering a Calamity to achieve.
