Dinner for Trolls
WHO: Rukia Kuchiki, Yuri Lowell
WHAT: Two GREAT FRIENDS share a meal and tease the crap out of each other.
WHEN: October 9th
WHERE: Aqures Ixen
If Rukia was going to be gone for a few days, then Yuri would probably like to have his stew pot safely returned. She was still uneasy about departing for military tests when it seemed like the city was starting to get plagued by restless spirits. She was a shinigami, this should have been her specialty.
But that's not what she was in this world. It was a bitter pill to swallow, especially knowing that she should be able to feel the presence of the undead. All she felt was the cool evening air, and a heap of insufferable frustration.
So why visit Yuri, who was likely to add fuel to the fire? Because he'd add fuel to a different fire, one that was far more manageable. They'd bicker and needle each other, and it would get her mind off of things for a short time. Besides, she had certain questions she wanted to ask him.
Reaching his front step, she cradled the pot under her arm and knocked with the back of her hand. "Oi, it's Rukia," she called out. Maybe they could go eat something, too.

Once they left the house, she continued. "A shinigami, or soul reaper as others calls us, is responsible for guiding the souls of the dead to the afterlife, as well as exorcising spirits that prey upon the souls of others." She slipped her hands into the folds of her voluminous sleeves for warmth and comfort as they walked. "Soul Reapers reside in the Soul Society, where nearly all spirits dwell after passing from the world of the living. The organization as a whole is somewhat militaristic, in that we have several divisions that specialize in certain areas, and each division is led by a captain and a vice captain. I belonged to the 13th Division."
She realized she was probably giving up more information than he'd requested, so she quieted with a fond smile. "It's strange to be away from it for so long. I worry that I may come under heavy condemnation for residing in this world for so long and neglecting my duties elsewhere."
Rukia lifted her head to look up at him curiously. "You know how to cook?" He said he could make almost everything else, too. "Raven taught me to make that dish. I could attempt to make some for you another night, if you wish." In exchange, maybe he'd teach her to make a new dish as well.
no subject
"Soul Reapers huh? That sounds like a pretty nifty occupation you have there. Then again I suppose that makes a lot of sense the way you act and talk. Then there's that sword skills ya got too."
He replied with a hand to his chin in brief ponder. It was a lot more than he thought but it wasn't annoying. He at least learned something new about her. He's seeing her in a different light slowly and gradually. The strangely active shorty was a Soul Reaper of sorts with a pretty important role. It seemed like her world was full of confusing things that Yuri didn't get but he didn't find odd either.
He was used to strange things after.
"Who wants to know?" he mused giving her a side glance, "No kidding. Then again it makes more sense for folks like you who actually got something they work consistently at. I'm just a wanderer."
He replied with a brief laugh.

Rukia smiled. She supposed her manner of speech was overly formal. It wasn't always that way, but after decades of living with her brother and trying to uphold his family's honor, it became ingrained. "Well, not all speak the way I do," she chuckled with a shrug. "I was adopted into a noble family, so I strive not to bring any further controversy or condemnation to the Kuchiki name. I bet you weren't aware that you were friends with an aristocrat," she teased him with a friendly elbow to the side.
It wasn't something she liked to toss around, but she had little doubt that Yuri wouldn't treat her any differently. So it was fine letting him know.
She was also secretly flattered at his comment regarding her sword skills. That was a weakness she'd struggled with for a long time in order to make herself competent.
"Cooking is new to me," she smiled, feeling comfortable and relaxed in his company. "I helped out a little when I was in the living world back home, but it wasn't until I came here that I pursued the hobby with serious intent. What about yourself?" she gestured with an open palm. "Where did you learn to cook?"
no subject
"Sounds about right and nah I know and aristocrat at home too. She was quite the trouble maker," he replied chuckling. Estelle definitely had her charms and was completely different from many nobles he had met. The same could be said for Rukia. Despite, Rukia saying such things to him, he didn't see her as anything more than just Rukia.
"Not a lot of folks do it. It does take time and energy to do so. What about me?" he replied with a shrug, "I just pick up things here and there."
That's as straight forwards as she was going to get in regards to that question.
no subject
"Interesting," she nodded. "It seems there are quite a few cooks in the city. Either people seem to be very good, or have never seen a saucepan in their lives. It's a strange gap in skill level."
It was also a pity that she'd worked so hard to learn how to make a strawberry cheesecake, only for the person who loved that dessert to fall into crystal stasis.
"What other talents did you pick up?"
no subject
"Is it really?" he replied raising a brow at her. Honestly, he couldn't really believe that this was interesting at all. Cooking was just a hobby and he had to live on his own so he had to learn.
"Sounds about right. It's not hard to learn if you put your mind to it, I guess."
He shrugged a little, "What other talents? I wonder."
He laughed. He's not talking about his thieving ways and other things he learned along the way. That's probably left in the dark for its own good.
no subject
He didn't ask too many questions himself either, she noticed. She was surprised he wasn't at least a little curious about what she and Raven did for their 'date' but perhaps Raven had already mentioned it.
Or Yuri just didn't care. That was a far more likely possibility, wasn't it?
"Anyway, it's interesting to me. I know very few people who know how to cook. Shinigami don't eat much to begin with, and the estate had servants that covered such tasks." She looked forward as they walked down the street toward the pub. "Creating a dish out of a variety of ingredients is a little fascinating, isn't it? Just the slightest change can make a big difference in the way it tastes and looks. I'm looking forward to seeing what you're able to make."
no subject
Really, he's not tight lipped, rather he just didn't feel like it was necessary to talk about these things. He'd always been moving forward on his own and leaving things like his past behind, though of course, he learned a lot of things from his past that he wouldn't dream of forgetting. There was also the men that inspired him to be what he is today. He couldn't possibly drop that thought at all.
Rukia was right, Yuri wasn't interested in dating or any of those little things. What Raven and Rukia did on their spare time was theirs alone. He didn't need to hear the fluffy details to be honest.
"Sounds like you had a pretty nice life. It makes sense. There's nothing wrong with it."
He shrugged a little whens he continued to talk about making meals and such things like that.
"Yeah sounds about right. You seem really interested in cooking and all. Are you learning or something?" he mused giving he a raised brow as they were continuing their conversation.
no subject
...A nice life? Rukia peered at him flatly for a moment before smirking. "You do know that soul reapers are dead, right? I'm no exception." She chuckled, grinning, then hitched her shoulders with a sigh. "It was comfortable, I suppose. But lonely. I was adopted, so I didn't have any friends among the nobility. Anyone who wasn't a noble wouldn't have anything to do with someone they considered beyond their social status."
She stepped up to the door and opened it, allowing him to enter first. "I shouldn't complain, however. I gained a brother, and I don't regret that now."
Rukia moved into the cafe, head tipped back to study the overhead menu and daily specials. As for cooking, she glanced at him, then nodded. "Here, I'm mortal. I may as well learn how to live as one. It's been a pleasant experience so far."
no subject
He shrugged, "You're still living in a sense, dead or not," he replied dismissively at her comment. He didn't really see what the difference was. She was living in some form or way or did she prefer existing? That sounded way too dull. Yuri could understand where she was coming from when she said those words, "Well, you did well, I suppose. They sure didn't rub off on you."
He replied trying to at least sound sincere. She had a family. That was what's important. Yuri didn't have one and he was grateful that Flynn's dad had treated him like he was part of the family. Flynn in some ways was like a brother to him, and that's all that really mattered.
Yuri followed in first since she offered, "That sounds about right. You should enjoy the time you spend on whatever you do. You only live ones right?"
no subject
She wasn't bitter about it in the slightest, nor did she have any regrets, of her very short lifespan in the world of the living. She'd died as a baby, so it wasn't as if she knew what she was missing. At least, she hadn't known before she'd got a taste of what it was to be a mortal in this world. Rukia picked up a pair of menus, allowing Yuri to select the table before following after him to take a seat.
"It's not something I should allow myself to grow accustomed to, of course. But the experiences I've had so far..."
Rukia tipped her head back with a serene smile, recalling her first meeting with Cloud and his affectionate chocobo, of playing video games with her roommate late into the night, of the sheer exhiliration she felt when she got her letter of acceptance into the military, of linking arms with Raven for her first date...
"...It's been...pleasant." She closed her eyes, her smile widening into a grin. "Very much so. I'm grateful to be here, I can't deny that."
no subject
He replied with a smug look on his face. Yuri took one of the menus from Rukia as she picked them up. It was definitely unfortunate that she had died as an infant, but Yuri saw her current existence as something much more than that. She was a bold and strong woman. He appreciated that about her and it was rare to come across headstrong people these days. He was also appreciative that she wasn't shoving her ideals down his throat or telling him that he did bad things.
"Why not? I don't see anything wrong with wanting to indulge," he shrugged. Whether she was here temporarily or permanently he believed that everyone deserved a fulfilling life to some extent. Not that he hadn't taken his share of lives either. He honestly couldn't say that he appreciated A Grade assholes that didn't do anything to help their people. Those kinds of people could rot for all he cared. He watched one sink into their death after all.
Yuri ordered some basic things from the menu when he caught a waiter and gave them the menu while he waited for Rukia to make her choices. Honestly, there were so many things to experience. While this place made him uneasy and bitter, he still did what he wanted to the fullest. He never let himself be tied down by anything and sometimes it could get him into some deep shit, but Yuri was like the wind. He kept going and wherever he ended up, he didn't care.
"Heh, not a lot of folks can say that, but good to know."
no subject
"No, it can be dangerous, and arouse selfish desires. And of course, it's never pleasant to grow too attached to something, or someone, when such an attachment is sure to be nothing more than temporary."
She couldn't explain every last detail, of course, but there were a lot of restrictions placed on how much a shinigami could interact with a living person. The general rule was: don't. Don't ever. It led to serious complications, as she'd learned well.
"Anyway," she shrugged, "I didn't suggest we share a meal so I could preach fatalistic ideals. Tell me how you're getting on," she said, sipping from her water glass. "Did you take on the ghostbuster job, perchance?"
no subject
"Strong bonds transcend time and space. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for my friends and selfishly hanging onto my beliefs. Not saying that you have to do that, but you don't got to be so stiff about it, Shorty."
He replied with a brief laugh. Once they were done ordering, he hands the waiter the menus. There are but Yuri doesn't care about them if Rukia can see by how he reacts to the situation. However, he does put it into consideration. He just won't follow it.
"Getting on?" he raised a brow before continuing, "Yeah, figured it might be useful if there are ghost types roaming around. Can't hurt to be safe. How about yourself?" he mused towards her as he took a glass of water.
no subject
"Don't get me wrong," she shook her head. "Friendships are different. It's important to get along with those who share your battles and burdens, of course." Rukia wasn't sure she should elaborate further than that. It would get awkward, and she wasn't sure she could properly explain herself. He'd tease her about it too much, of that she was sure.
Best to talk about ghostbusting. She smiled proudly, thumbing the lapel of her jumpsuit. "Naturally. The abilities the job grants are the closest I can get to my abilities as a shinigami. The methods are different, but the results at least are satisfactory."
She was actually really getting into it. It seemed like she spent the majority of her waking hours (and cut into some of her sleeping hours too) tracking down malevolent spirits and boxing them up in the containment unit.
"It feels good to be doing the work I'm used to, once again."
no subject
He's not here to change people's beliefs.
"You do what you gotta do, but it's not wrong to enjoy the time you have, even if you got to put some things on hold."
Yuri added briefly with a shrug. That made sense though, that she would think that it was similar to the job that she did in her own world. It probably gave her a sense of peace. Much like Yuri's classes definitely defined him as a person.
"I don't blame ya. It's hard to adjust to something completely new."
no subject
Mortality certainly was troublesome, she thought with a sigh, resting her cheek against her fist as she begrudgingly nodded to acknowledge his point. He wasn't being pushy about it, and she was grateful for that. Her friendship with Angeal became severely strained when he'd tried to convince her that it was okay to pursue a little romance since she was as human as anyone else in this world.
But that mortality wouldn't last forever.
"What about you?" she asked, picking up her fork and prodding a little at the fluffy mound of whipped eggs once it was placed in front of her. "I'm sure you're eager to return to your world as well. Or are you starting to grow a little attached to this place too?"
no subject
Yuri didn't care for pushing his beliefs onto others. He knew his way of thinking was just a tad bit different and almost much darker than most people. He's not going to press for others to go with what he wants. They choose to if they want to and they don't have to watch it happen. He won't even mind if he lost friendships over it. It's just that kind of life he's always led.
"Attached to this place? You kidding me? It's restrictive and annoying. This place demands you do what it wants, and I'm not that kind of team player. I'd rather be saving my world with my own abilities to be honest. Not here pretending to play some Hero Game for the sake of my world. It's the only reason I'm really going along with this."
no subject
And she wouldn't be wrestling with such human attachments, either, but that was neither here nor there.
"Well, I'm grateful you're still choosing to fight in any case," she said, popping a bite of fluffy eggs into her mouth. "After all, my world is on the line too. You save yours, you save mine in the process."
no subject
He wasn't a hero and he would never admit to being one even if he played that role. Yuri was just that kind of person and he would never change.
"Only because there's a reason for me wanting to fight. On top of that, we can't leave folks here to suffer either. I'd wish they'd at least ask before choosing to be honest," he sighed at her words and shook his head, "Well that's one way to put it. I'm doing it to save the other worlds from being screwed over, including mine."
no subject
And then she paid the bill, since she was the one that ousted him out of bed in the first place.
[OOC: Want to end here, or was there anything else we needed to cover?]

He replied with a basic laugh for her sly smirk. Of course he was going to get used to some of her comebacks seeing that Rukia was definitely different from what he's been used too. However, he was similar to some of his friends at home, which was why it was easy to get along with her.
Yuri waved goodbye to her when she paid the bill, not questioning it for the matter. If she wanted to pay that's on her.
With that he leaves and hopefully he'll see her around some more.
