How about it, then? Will you summon a second to fight with us, or do you prefer to fight us both? Let it not be said that we have not been more than generous to offer options.

[Tazendra sighed as the Bargaa left]

I do hope he returns quickly.

Most likely he will not.

[Ellie is already turning to go.]

Even if he does, we will bring ourselves no honor to our status as Heroes of Light if we are reduced to brawling in the streets, while we might save his if he thinks we have fled.

[Tazendra sighed]

Ah, you are no doubt, correct. Though I find I care little for his honor.

Nor I.

[Not as an individual. As a band, however, or even a race, they could be useful to her. But Tazendra's acquiescence to Ellie's statement gives the young woman pause, and she regards the taller woman with a different perspective. Honestly she'd half-expected to be called a coward, or given some sort of stiff-necked rebuke and insistence that they remain. Perhaps Ellie misjudged her.]

Of course...

[She smiles.]

...if you wish to test blades with another, I am always keen for a sparring partner. Good bladesmen are difficult to find.

[Tazendra has some pretense to honor, which means that she knows she should avoid brawls that cause trouble, even when brawls are incredibly fun. Someone reminding her that that there is a difference between a formal duel and fighting street thugs means she can't pretend she forgot herself.]

That may be dangerous. It has been a while since I've crossed blades with someone I was not trying to kill.

Then this shouldn't be a problem, if you lack that much self-control.

[Her brow arches. It's pretty clear she's goading Tazendra. Or is she? Other than a faint quirk of the left corner of her mouth, her expression doesn't reveal much about what's going on in her head.]

It would have to be later, of course, where it would not be a disruption to a relatively diplomatic mission.

[Tazendra sometimes came off as dense, but it was more that she ignored things she didn't think were relevant. Someone trying to pick a fight was always relevant.]

I have been a sorceress for far longer than you have been alive. One does not survive learning sorcery without control. From the way you speak, it seems as if you desire a duel more than a friendly match.

Oh? Do you claim to know my age?

[Ellie chuckled. Interesting. The woman had a fairly quick temper.]

Sorcery is not the same as swordsmanship. If you have control, as you claim, then it is not outside the realm of possibility to fight an opponent without aiming to kill. Surely you know the value of subduing your enemies.

{Tazendra shrugged] Not as such, but you resemble the Easterners of my homeworld, and they live their lives in the time my people grow to adulthood.

And as for subduing my enemies, I... well, there is the possibility of surrender, but, you perceive, in an actual match, I am far more interested in stopping my opponent from shedding my blood than making it easy for him to surrender.

There are many, many occasions where surrender and capture are more useful than slaughter. You can gain very little information from a corpse, for example.

We will spar with blunted blades, then.

[Apparently Ellie has already made up her mind on that account, nodding as she continues walking once more.]

After we are returned, of course.

[Tazendra shrugged, as if she acknowledged the point, but was feeling put out enough to offer.]

I have had friends who could tell quite a bit from a corpse. They are very clever. But they are also the sorts to suggest such things as questioning witnesses.

[Which usually doesn't occur to Tazendra until later. Especially if she knows someone else will remember for her.]

After we are returned, yes.
