That and I've seen a few poor fools take the floor for granted and suddenly find it no longer beneath them. Me, I'm just trying to get a feel for this new land. Those lizard-folk look like they could be good allies indeed.
[Fortunately she says the l-word quietly enough to avoid angering anyone.]
Eleventh division eh? I didn't take you for a soldier. Infantry? Navy?
no subject
[How should she put it? It doesn't help that the alcohol is making it hard for her to think straight.]
I'm a soul reaper, hailing from the Soul Society. There are thirteen divisions tasked with protecting the souls of the living and the dead. We also exorcise Hollows with our swords.
[Rukia looks thoughtful for a moment, then nods. Yeah, that about sums it up. She doesn't consider the effect her casual words might have; everyone has been fairly accepting of who she is, and has been given no reason to hold back information regarding her identity.]
no subject
[Kidd's eyes widen a bit at this revelation.]
A reaper...you're...you're concerned with those who have died...
[Kidd looks down, thoughtfully gazing at her drink.]
And what, pray, is a Hollow? And what becomes of those who escape their own deaths?
no subject
[That might be the most shocked she's seen someone become after talking about her profession. She's not sure if she's pleased or not, but it's a little more along the lines of what she expected.]
But I am not here to guide anyone's souls tonight.
[Rukia smiles, and reaches gladly for the glass of water that the bartender slides her way. She'll need this.]
Hollows are what a soul becomes when they lose their hearts, clinging too long to the world of the living. They become monsters, savage and hungry. It's unfortunate, but they can be saved.
[She's about to answer the last question, but she finds herself studying Mary a little more carefully. Then she smiiiiiiiiiiiiiles.]
Are you asking because you think I might try to force a death from you?
no subject
She hears Rukia's full reply before she looks up, stopping as she sees the leer on the girl's face. Her concern turns to a mildly offended frown.]
I'm not in the market to take a life while we're here, if that's what you mean...Nevermind...
no subject
[She sways a little as she turns back to her water. This might be the first person she possibly unnerved with her true identity. At least, that's how it seems. Her mind is too fuzzy to really tell what's going through Kidd's head. As if she'd need to hire an assassin if she wanted someone dead.]
Relax. I'm not reaping anyone's souls. Especially not while they're still alive, that's against regulations.

Apologies. I have a bit on my mind after the meeting with the Sage. There was a version of me in this world long ago. I saw that version of me killed by at the hand of a friend's son. And others killed just from standing nearby.
[Looking down she turns her drink with her fingers.]
And back home, I was on death's door when I found myself here. I don't expect I would have survived otherwise.

I'd heard that many of us were present in this place 2000 years ago. I wonder if I was there as well.
[She has no real way of knowing, unless someone happened to see her there and remember it.]
I take it you are one of the ones who will elect to stay, once this is over? You fear death?
no subject
[She takes a slow sip, keeping eye contact with Rukia and then smirks over the rim.]
I simply just don't want to. Least of all of fever back in a filthy prison.
[Well at least she thinks it's funny.]
You may well have been there. I couldn't say. My own exposure was limited to Young Kenway's point of view.
no subject
[So long as she isn't scared of Rukia herself. She can't think of any real reason they'd have to ever cross blades, given that they're both on the same side.]
Who's Young Kenway?
no subject
[But what in this world isn't?]
At one point we all shared a...dream. We found ourselves in the bodies of Heroes in a previous cycle here. Some of us were ourselves. Others wound up in people we had some sort of connection to.
Myself, I was seeing it all through the eyes of a friend's son, now a grown man and a murderer of his own kin and brethren.

[The details are fuzzy with inebriation, but she's certain she read a summary in Zelda's notes at the observatory.]
I wouldn't mind hearing your account, however.
[She just hopes she'll remember it in the morning, because she's starting to feel a little sick. Rukia gulps more water, almost with fierce determination.]

Haytham had been an ally to my Brothers brought to this world, including me no less. But something happened, an accident, and his son died. He blamed his father for it and then set about killing the rest of us in turn.
He cut a rope bridge just to kill me, all to prevent the artifact that his party was seeking from falling into the hands of people he felt he couldn't trust. Even if they were all that was left to save the world.
[She shudders at the memories. Not just the image of herself falling away into darkness. Not just the image of all the Heroes huddled together, desperate for a turning point. She recalls the baby she held in her arms in that other world. The other Mary had been taken to Crystallis a scant few months before she had.
But it was enough.]
no subject
[She was just trying to figure out who Young Kenway was. Who was Haytham? An ally? Rukia's head sank into her spread fingers as she winced. It was getting harder to think straight. Maybe she should have saved her questions for when she was sober, since she's not even sure she'll remember any of this on the morrow.]
[Thankfully, Mary explains a little, but it still isn't sinking in the way she'd hoped.]
That sounds bad.
[NO. REALLY? Forgive her, she's drunk and confused.]
no subject
In any case the whole affair was unpleasant to say the least. Imagine being trapped in a body not your own, barely able to influence their actions. Yet being forced to feel everything that they do.
[She shakes her head and sighs.]
And all of this because the version of Edward brought here was his younger fool self.
[She sits back, eyeing her drink but making no move to take it for the moment. She waits with that expectancy that an answer will emerge from it but knowing that it's a fool's gesture.]
I want to know why we're being toyed with like this, but that Sage seems unwilling to tell us for the time being.
no subject
[Rukia puts a fist to her mouth, holding her breath for a moment. ...Nope, that won't help. She slides off of the stool, her complexion growing pale and edging toward a sickly color.]
Please excuse me, I am not...
[She staggers quickly toward the door, and miraculously makes it outside where she politely throws up on some grass.]
no subject
She doesn't leave Rukia alone for long, rising from her chair to follow after the girl. A few passerbys give Rukia looks for what she's doing, but it's not exactly a surprising sight in front of a pub.]
You okay there, lass?
no subject
[She coughs a few more times, hating the burning taste in her mouth. Alcohol didn't even taste good going down, it was even worse coming back up. She cups her hand over her mouth to take a few deep breaths of cleansing air, trying to get her stomach to stop twitching and heaving.]
[When she finally feels like the worst of it has passed, she pulls her head up, struggling to maintain some semblance of dignity.]
Forgive me. It seems I...exceeded my limits.
no subject
Kidd pities Rukia in this moment, but she doesn't look down on the girl for it. It's a rite of passage to go too far and lose your sick outside a pub. Even with those watching, there were few who hadn't experienced it themselves.]
Just take it easy. Remember to breathe. We'll get you cleaned up. You didn't dirty anyone's boots so there's nothing to be worried about. And you're still standing and conscious so don't think of this as a loss.
no subject
[She still feels like a hot pile of garbage. She can only imagine how much worse it will be on the morrow. Thank goodness they've already met the sage, Rukia doesn't think she'd survive those hellishly long stairs with tomorrow's hangover.]
At least diplomatic relations with the Bangaa are...
[What's the word? She can't remember, and just sways a little in place.]
Good.

Glad to hear it. If I ever need to take on a few as contacts or trainees I'll be sure to have you as my ambassador.
