Summary: The first trip to the Continent of Ruins is finally happening! The Heroes of Light, the Enterprise Crew, Cid and O'aka are all onboard for the trip. What will the Heroes of Light find there? Yeah. Stuff like that is what worried me.

[Cloud frowns and turns more of his focus back to the game. He doesn't need to be told that he was probably on the wrong side of things.]

Thing is, there really wasn't much else for someone wanting to get out of the backwaters. It was go off and join the army or stay home and be a farmer or a miner or a reactor tech.

[Maybe once in a blue moon a boonies kid was good enough to do something more with his life, but then they'd still have to move to Midgar anyway.]

Oh. Did you not like where you grew up?

[What other reason would there be to leave?]

Pretty much. I grew up out in a backwater mountain town. There was nothing for me there and I convinced myself I was better than everyone else. That and most of the adults in town blamed me when Tifa got hurt after her mother died.

[He glances from the game to Chiaki for a moment. Better to just explain this one.]

She'd gone off into the mountains to try to get to the other side. Her other friends followed her but they gave up. In the end I was the only one following her when the bridge collapsed. All the adults thought I was the one who convinced her to go out there in the first place. Her dad was screaming at me every day until she woke up and wouldn't let me see her when she did.

...What was on the other side of the mountains?

[Yes, that's the detail she's chosen to focus on.]

Huh?

[That sound you hear is a train of thought derailing. So many dead and injured. It's like AVALANCHE made a master attack.]

Oh...uh...not much really...another small town I think? Nothing special.

(ooc: I checked, it doesn't become Rocket Town until after Cloud ends up in the tank)

Did she think she'd find her mom on the other side? Is that why she went?

Yeah. I think she knew better but at the same time she just didn't want to accept her mom was gone. She couldn't just sit and quietly accept it. I can't really blame her.

It's hard... experiencing the death of someone important to you.

[Cloud just nods, not bothering to say anything. He's been fortunate enough to avoid real loss to this point in his life but he's also aware about how it's going to take a turn.

It just doesn't seem real. Even with the memories from the other him, it's more like he's being told about the tragedy than experiencing it. And being stuck in the middle between the present and the future is not something he's enjoying.

He fiddles with the game some more, playing in silence before the character slides down a ramp, setting him back to the beginning of the level.]

Nnnnnononono OH COME ON.

[Chiaki is content to let that conversation hang there. She doesn't really want to get into talking about the deaths she experienced in her world. And so, she's quite grateful for the course hazards Cloud keeps hitting.]

Oh. Yeah. That one is easy to fall into.

[Cloud furrows his brow and grits his teeth as he tries to recover ground. Every time he seems to get close though he overshoots or undershoots, sending him sliding back down to the base of the ram. After a while of this he gives the controls an angry thump and steps aside.]

How do they expect you to do this?!

((ooc: hey, remember jumping up the platforms inside the sunken ship in Mario 64?))

It's best to take a break when you get frustrated with a level you can't clear.

[Cloud looks at Chiaki for a beat and then looks back to the game. He gives it one last parting glare before stepping away with a grunt and crosses his arms in a petulant pout.]
