That, or he's equal parts brave and reckless.

[Honestly? Were it not for the obvious risks, she would be mostly impressed by the feat of cute-yet-horrifying. Hello, Akane, by the way.]

Either way, I suppose it is something to admire... though perhaps only at a distance.

[Hello, House Mom!]

A very, very far distance.

[Akane giggles as she voices her agreement. Still, the dinosaur with a top hat is really cute. She wishes she had a camera so she could take a picture of it.]

What do you think of the festival so far? I wish I could say you arrived at a good time, but...

[Akane she's only seven years older than you...! :(]

To be honest, I have a knack for arriving at the worst possible moment. Granted, last time involved an explosion...

[She laughs to herself. Ah, life as a walking spanner in the works.]

The festival's been a nice change of pace.

[sesenta]

An explosion?!

[Akane blinks in surprise, then smiles brightly.]

I'd like to know the story behind that.

[She strolls along at a slow and casual pace, curious to see if anything was done with that plague behemoth that got donated. It'd be kind of hilarious if it had been gifted one of those sick masks people wear when they catch cold.]

So, understand my clan was more attuned with the human settlements than most of the Dalish...

[It was easy to keep pace with the other, considering she was quite used to brisk walks it was almost nice for a change. .Keeping an eye out on the creatures the old man figured would be a wonderful idea to let parade along the city, she elected she may as well... Most of her world already knew a version of the tale, anyway.]

A war had broken out amongst the human mages and their templars. The mages had grown tired of being constrained and treated as dangerous forces needing to be constantly spied upon, and the templars felt their charges were pushing too hard for independence while simultaneously not being given enough aide for their efforts. As the First in line to succeed my clan's keeper and spiritual guide, I was sent to spy on the peace talks between the two factions...

[Honestly she sided with the mages far more than others, likely due to being one herself, but...]

Not only do I find the talks in disarray, but upon entering one of the lower levels of the temple they were held in I accidentally stumbled upon a plot to kill the talks' leader. The resulting explosion destroyed the entire temple and all in it, save for three people. One of which... died to a very powerful demon not long after.

[sesenta]

Oh...! Goodness.

[Akane blinks in surprise. She can only imagine how horrible that must have been, and she's trying NOT to imagine a single detail...not how it must have smelled, not the sight of torn bodies, not demons killing people... She shakes her head with a little grunt of discomfort. So much for not imagining.]

What did you do? I mean, if there was nothing left to spy on, you could have just gone home, right?

What any mortal would have: stumbled out of a rift and fell unconscious without a clue what just happened. Even if I could have returned to my clan, they would have likely sent me back to assist the fledgling inquisition in the effort to restore order.

[sesenta]

[Akane hugs her arms, rubbing them slightly as she hunches her shoulders.]

That sounds really scary. I'm glad you made it out of that place okay!

[Otherwise she wouldn't have such a nice roommate who brings pastries and maintains peace and order in their happy house.]

So then what happened? There was some sort of inquisition task force?

[lostwisdom]

[She doesn't have the heart to correct her younger roommate, thus she simply nods. She escaped with her life, but how long it would last... She places her unmarked right hand on Akane's shoulder. There was no need for her to become distraught over the past.]

Not at first.

[She releases her grip on Akane's shoulder, with a faint smile.]

I had been captured for questioning, but thanks to... [Her voice trails for a moment before her composure returns.] --to a friend keeping me alive by his magic, I was able to help close the smaller tears in the Veil and prove my innocence in the Divine's murder. What followed that I believe could fill an entire book, starting with the calling of the second Inquisition in Thedosian history.

[Akane smiles, comforted by the friendly touch. That kind of physical expression is rare for her, but she thoroughly appreciates the kindness. Still, it's a pretty sad story to hear, and a scary one too. Obviously things must have turned out okay in the end, since Ellana is here beside her, but it's still a shame that those things happened at all.]

There was a famous period in Earth's history concerning a couple of inquisitions as well. It was hundreds of years ago, based on religious orthodoxy.

[Akane would spare Ellana the long, long paragraphs of exposition that she was ordinarily prone to giving when relating tales of history, probably because there wasn't anything mysterious or supernatural about it, save for The Black Legend which didn't carry much of eerie interest.]

Was yours the same?

No, it wasn't.

[There was a polite way to put it. Yet she was not of the mind to be politically correct at this point.]

While most of the members followed the teachings of the established religion of the region, the order was started in defiance of the bureaucrats who would rather bicker behind closed doors than protect their people as the world destroyed itself around them.

In short, we were upstarts who rose up to the challenge when others could or would not.

[sesenta]

[Akane doesn't seem offended; she's merely curious to know more about what this woman's world was like since it's so different from hers.]

A band of roving vigilantes then! That has a nice sound to it.

[She smiles, lacing her fingers together.]

And it was for a good cause, too. That kind of work is really dangerous, it takes a lot of courage and dedication to make a difference in the face of violence.
