Without pressing him further on the matter she can assume that he means to remember the victims of the past as his incentive to do better than he perceives he did last time.

She's much the same way, herself. She's never been one to seek apology. Rather she too wants to remind herself of what needs to be done and make sure it does so.

And in the end, the answer he gives is his own. It's right as long as he believes in it.
