[The smile Lydia gives in turn is understanding. She gets it, and understands that Sephiroth isn't used to having friends, at the very least. He'd been kind to her, talking with her and sharing what he knew of his past and potential future. He treated her like she was an adult, albeit a young one and growing.

In turn, he had her respect and friendship and she wanted him happy. The least she could do was honor his request to the best of her ability, and Lydia took her friendship seriously.]

You're my friend. Anything I can do to help, I will give my best shot at.

[While Lydia is still a teenager, she's growing not only through the rest of it while she's here but she's also developing into a resourceful, well-natured and quite level-headed young woman. She's offered him untold encouragement, reassurance and her open-minded approach has helped to take the edge off of things for Sephiroth on more than one occasion.

He's not about to destroy that by reeling off his usual comment about friendships. He supposes he has been something of a friend, if not more on the mentor-side, to Lydia as well.]

I know that you will, you always do give it your best.

[It's scary for her--everyone she gets really close to, especially the mentor-types, has so far ended up in Crystal. She's trying hard to not worry about when Ales or Sephiroth or K'Pandolu will turn into a Crystal. She's worried about if Ira will, even though he promised he wouldn't. It's not exactly a promise he can keep.

None of that matters right then though, with her friends (old and new, close or not) heading into danger. So for now, although she is sad and worried, she'll be putting on as brave a face as she can.]

It means a lot to hear that from you.

[There's a more genuine smile, if still sad. Reaching up to brush some of her hair back behind her ear.]

You make a good example too. Of doing one's best.

[It's been a while since Sephiroth has lost someone close to the Crystal stasis and even then he hadn't appreciated how much both of his once-friends had meant to him until they weren't there anymore. It's hard to deal with, but the important thing to remember is the commonly known theory that it's Crystallis' self-defense mechanism against the Calamity inherent in the Heroes.

Not to mention what the stasis did to him last time he'd been briefly taken by it. It still concerns him that he wouldn't have a say if something happened and he came back different.]

I'll always try- [A flash of an equally sad smile, just to encourage Lydia, really.]

-might not always work out to be the best I could be but sometimes perfection isn't possible.

[The sad smile stays, and the short hint of laughter is equally melancholy. Resigned.]

Yeah, I know. But you still make a good example. So make sure to tell me all about it when you get back, right?

[Because Lydia is refusing to believe he won't be back. They will all make it back safely. She is not willing to consider the other possibility just yet--even if it scares her and is waiting for her to be alone to ambush her with that fear.]

[A frown deepens at the top of Sephiroth's nose, he rises his head and turns up and away from Lydia so she doesn't catch the full depth of the expression though. That said, he's clearly thinking: Lets concentrate on getting back, first.

But equally he appreciates that Lydia doesn't have to hear that right now. What he wouldn't give for her stubborn refusal to believe that it won't all go the best way that it can. He wonders, really, if she is all that fearless or if it might be like his own brave front at times - only skin deep.]

It'll be the first thing on the list.

Think we're wrapping up?

[It's a bit of both, Sephiroth. Faith and confidence in her friends, and a very brave front combined. She nods in thanks, still holding onto her sad smile even as he frowns. Lydia will be optimistic for both of them.]

I'll let you get back to work. Thank you, for always making time for me. Being my friend. Thanks...in general really.

[She's taken enough of his time up at this point.]
