"I do not mean that she is without sin. She will face judgment from whatever god or power has dominion here...but falling into that abyss..." He shakes his head. The best she could have hoped for was a quick death upon impact. The young girl who had yet to become the hardened scientist Kalki did indeed deserve better than that.

"But I think that we cannot dwell on what could have been. What is demands too much of our attention to spare it. We acted as best we knew how, and if that is not enough... then that is what we shall answer for, when we meet our gods."

The look that Jack gives Ramza is curious, and he remains quiet for a long time, picking through his words to choose them with care. "I didn't take you- for a religious man. Everything I've met claiming to be a god has always turned out to be something else. Interdimensional being, alien, technology, misguided human?"

"Sure, Kalki didn't deserve falling into crystal, based on whatever morality you want to guide yourself by. But I'm not holding out for the idea of a final judgement. She pays for her crimes here."

Jack's brow remains furrowed, but he holds back the last thing he wants to say. Which is more important, Jack? Your friendship with Ramza, or being right?

Ramza shrugs. His church, at least, was founded on lies, true, but that did not mean all religion was false.

"I think it would be folly to assume we understand everything about the worlds and how they were formed. With what I have seen and known, I choose to believe in gods and afterlives, though I'll not fault you for what you choose to accept as the truth."

The smile that forms on his face is wistful. It was Lady Zelda, a goddess made flesh, that had helped him find the faith he had lost. He could not believe that a soul so good could just be lost. She had to be somewhere, returned to her rightful world and at peace. Anything else was too cruel a thought to entertain.

"If you hope for justice in this world, I fear you will be disappointed. Good men die, and tyrants live and prosper. We have little control over the wheel of fortune. I see no harm in looking to the next life for hope, and in striving to be the best man I can be in anticipation of that reward."
