You know, most people start with hello.

[Then again, he's pretty sure neither of them are most people. Dylas stands out even in the crowd, and since he's standing, well. Enjoy looking way up, Ed.]

I guess that's one way to look at it. [He's never been flying over a big city before. Just a smaller one.] It's been a while.

[Ed shrugs with a half-hearted smirk, as he takes another sip of his bourbon. His expression fades away quickly, though.]

Sorry, guess I've run all out of pleasantries tonight. Just thinking about how fleeting freedom is, I guess. Here, it's in the form of the Calamity eating away all of ours. But I wish just for one night I could forget all of that stuff.

[Wow. They're getting right into the serious stuff. Dylas looks around for a second and then takes a seat.]

Are, uh, you alright? [What a stupid question.] I'm sort of used to this stuff. It sounds like you aren't.

[Still trying to smile, Ed thinks for a moment on how much he wants to say. All the booze has loosened up the sharing center in his brain a bit. Normally he puts up a really good front, but in the last few years, that had been getting harder and harder to do.]

I, um... Yeah, just too much to drink, I guess. I have a lot of problems back home, as I'm sure we all do. None that are the impending end of the world, though. But... you're used to this? [Time to deflect a little.]

[personal profile] sullenstallion 2016-08-10 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
[Dylas makes a face at the deflection. His ears do a little flick, it might even look like his lips almost twitch into a snarl. He's...kind of scary, actually, but hopefully Ed has figured out he's a loser.

He looks towards the fireworks, tapping clawed fingers on the table as he chooses he trusts Ed enough to know.]

This is the second time I've been made a soldier in a world I'm not from. I know what it feels like to fight against something you can't find all the information for, how you have to wait for things to get worse. And things really got worse.

[He glances back at Ed, apologetic.]

It's not a story anyone should have to hear. You should focus more on the fireworks.

[personal profile] has_been_faking 2016-08-10 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[Whoops. Well the deflection worked, at least.]

The second time? That's a pretty terrible lottery to win. Sorry to hear it.

[He'll drink to that. Being able to drink away his problems again was nice. It'd been a long time.]

I'm glad this world can still celebrate despite everything that's going on. That seems like a good sign.

[He shrugs, not wanting to dwell on the topic for too long.]

Yeah, you're telling me. It's too late to worry about any of that now. It's already happened.

[He's a cynic. He's going to be one of those old men who never tells his grandchildren any stories and is then like "one time I killed a man" at the dinner table.]

People usually find a way. I think. They did that where I was last, too. Festivals. [Uh.] This one ended up nicer somehow.

[personal profile] has_been_faking 2016-08-12 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
This one's got booze and fireworks while riding on an airship. That makes it better than any festival ever, in my opinion. [He waves a hand at the ship in general.] The whole novelty of these things hasn't worn off yet. Not sure it ever will. No trains, no cars, but they got airships.
sullenstallion: (2)

[personal profile] sullenstallion 2016-08-12 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Is that impressive? That's how it is in Selphia, too. I've got a license for the airship there, but this is my first time on one since...well.

[Being dragged to two worlds.]

Hey. What's a train?
has_been_faking: (over the shoulder)

[personal profile] has_been_faking 2016-08-13 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
We have planes on Earth, but I've never gotten to fly in one. Who knows if I ever will. Besides, they're enclosed, and fly far higher and faster than these. No open air. I think I'd like this better anyway.

[He grins a little at the question.] No trains where you're from, either? Ah, well... imagine a mode of transportation that took place on tracks you laid from one place to another. An enormous steam-powered engine carries cars down them. I guess that's the best way I could describe them.
sullenstallion: (70)

[personal profile] sullenstallion 2016-08-13 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
[He can't picture them at all. He doesn't say anything to that effect, but his ears swivel down. He doesn't know what an engine looks like aside from an airship's, and the mention of cars just confuses him.]

It sounds really big. What happens if it doesn't have any tracks?

[He hones in on one part.]

[personal profile] has_been_faking 2016-08-14 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[He'd be better at explaining this if he were thinking clearly.]

Um, well, then it doesn't go any further. Trains are hard to stop, so let's hope the end of the track doesn't just sneak up on you.

[He waves a hand dismissively.] Sorry, something like this must be incredibly boring to someone unfamiliar with it all. It's just strange how my world and this one seemed to evolve in such different ways.
sullenstallion: (11)

[personal profile] sullenstallion 2016-08-14 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. It's pretty boring.

[Let him just devastate Ed right there. No, wait.]

Or maybe I used to think like that. But when we all come from different places, it's nice to talk about that stuff once in a while, I think. I've learned interesting things that way.
has_been_faking: (portrait)

[personal profile] has_been_faking 2016-08-15 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
[He chuckles.] See, I do find it all interesting, but that might be because I'm a boring old man. I've always known about the idea of other worlds out there, but we never had a way to really access them for long, even with magic. If the casters back home found out about what's happened to me, they'd be positively green with envy.

[He grins to himself. Take that, you elitist jerks.]

[personal profile] sullenstallion 2016-08-16 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
There are people out there who'd think this is exciting?

[He sounds a little alarmed by that, further evidenced by how his ears shoot up, but then he calms down. Of course. Some people like adventure. And a lot of people are idiots. Yeah, most of them, probably.]

I guess you really can't wait to get home then, huh.
has_been_faking: (tipped low)

[personal profile] has_been_faking 2016-08-17 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
A world like this, people don't know how well they've got it. Magic isn't well accepted where I'm from. Even after hundreds of years, people still study it secretly, still gather in guilds away from society... Here it's a part of every day life. I own a shop A stable shop! No black market, no secret sales, no dodging the authorities.

[That grin gets a little bigger, until Dylas mentions going home.]

... And, well, for those reasons and a few others, I don't think I am going home. I think if I can, if we manage to fix all this nonsense, I want to stay here.
sullenstallion: (11)

[personal profile] sullenstallion 2016-08-17 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
That's how it was in my world, too. The first one. Magic is normal.

[Dylas falls quiet for a moment. He's still save for a minute movement of his tail, his gaze focused on Ed completely as he turns that over in his head. And when he's done thinking, he turns away slightly.]

I've thought about that before. Figured wherever I went, I wouldn't want to stay where I used to be. I can't go back home anymore.

[personal profile] has_been_faking 2016-08-18 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I'm not alone in that. I can't really go back, either. Or more like, I have nothing to go back to. I have something here. I have a life again.

[He laughs a little, thinking about it.]

Then I guess I need to stop sitting here drinking and being a sad sack, and get back to work on saving this place.

[He's a little jealous, actually. Aside from selling fish, something he stopped doing after killing some townsfolk, he hasn't really felt like there's anything tying him here.]

You can probably wait one more night. You might not get another one like this for a while.
