Summary: The first phase of endgame begins! The Heroes of Light are on their way to deal with Garland as they’ve left their unfinished businesses in the hands of their friends amongst the NPCs. [In contrast to the serious or worried expressions, the latest arrival amongst the Heroes smiled jovially as he tipped his hat to the soldier beside the stairs, handing the good man the little bit of gil he'd received prior to this excursion to purchase a simple ether or two.]

I do hope you return safely, friend. T'would be a shame if you do not get to see the final chapter of this grand tale to it's end.

[To many who do not know him, it would come across as something benign, for that is, surprisingly, all he entailed it to be. For others... well, he wouldn't be surprised if some of the children would misconstrue his intent.]

[… K'pandolu intends to take this with cautious optimism.]

I'd like to think we'll reach whatever comes beyond that, too.

[admittedly- it may well not be everyone. but still.]

[By all means, do so, K'pandolu! He wouldn't have it any other way.]

But of course. [He smiles faintly at her.] I was just expressing my well wishes. We will be quite preoccupied momentarily, after all.

[she just can't help wanting the best.

She nods, looking worried for a moment- but that's the situation, after all.] That's true. Best get them in while we can.

[Nor can anyone, given the circumstances. Yet this is an old song and dance. May as well at least be civil. He tips his hat to the soldier once more, before gesturing to the other. Whether or not she follows is up to her, but he will not block the way if any others would like to take the time to purchase last minute supplies.]

Ah, it occurs to me I never introduced myself. Call me Ardyn.

[oh- whoops, yes they should. do that. She follows, giving the soldier a nod.]

A pleasure. K'pandolu Tohka. [she puts her hand over for a moment, then frowns.] Would I be right in assuming you arriving only recently…?

Please, the pleasure is all mine.

[He says it with an almost-kind, but mostly polite smile. He'd admit, a half-cat person was not something he'd expected to see in his lifetime save from some child's imaginings, but she seems to be a decent sort.]

You would indeed, though considering where I'd come to, it is a surprise I made it to this confrontation at all, really.

[she leans forward a little, ears flicked back and grinning, not meaning any actual hurt.]

Ah… I'm sorry to hear that. I'm glad you did, though. It wasn't too close to the advance of the Calamity, I hope?

[Come now, there was no offense taken! There was no need to act so. He gestures to the moogle at his side, who tips his hat to her politely.]

Thankfully no, and young Cleitus stopped me before I went too far. Though I did draw just close enough to see certain... similarities to my own world.

[She straightens up, and nods to the moogle, ears flicking towards him for a moment.]

That's good to hear. Though- that, perhaps not so much. [She frowns, tail twitching.] I hope that it is not so terrible, but… May I ask what happened?

[He can't fault her curiosity, that much is certain.]

I wonder, is such a time truly the best for such tales?

[He muses aloud to himself, staring down at his nails as he pauses in his steps.]

Now might be the only time, kupo.

[Cleitus had a point. Well, it was not as though one of those in the masses somewhere already knew. Considering they had intruded upon the confrontation with his Calamity Self.]

A corruption was brought down unto the land, twisting men and beast into unspeakable horrors that wreaked havok on the environment. Nights growing ever longer as the horrors multiplied in the dark. The sun had just recently ceased to rise, when I awoke here.

[she hadn't, but she nods, and listens. Her tail puffs up as he tells the story, and she shakes her head, before more determinedly shaking herself off fully and settling again.]

…Something that spoke to the darkness within them, if I were to venture a guess… But to touch the sun, as well? That sounds… terrifying. [she shakes her head again, frowning.] At least it still rises here- I'd imagine that's something of a relief.

[True, she had not - though the Teensie over there certainly had.]

An excellent guess. Whether it is true or not, I'm afraid I haven't the faintest idea. [Yet with his back turned, she won't see the look on his face.] Let us pray it remains that way. I would so hate to condemn another world to a similar fate as mine own.

[At least in that regard, he was honest.]

[Who is this odd man smiling like there's nothing wrong? Selphie followed the stranger at a distance, curious about what he would say or do next. Given the severity of the situation, even Selphie has packed her smiles away in exchange for a worried frown. To her, this wasn't the time for that type of reaction.

[Alas, like all other battles he's witnessed over his many years, this was conveniently akin to another day in the office. Worried glances and hurried soldiers. The only thing missing was the magitek infantry and could have sworn he as back in Gralea. But no, this was far removed from his own Star, despite it being so uncannily similar. Thus after tipping his hat once more to the good soldier and walks away, not truly to anyone in particular (after all, he was relatively new to this world).

When he hears that the crunch of footsteps behind him however, he pauses, resting most of his weight on his right as he pretends to glance at the nails on his right hand.]

You do know it's rather rude to be listening in on conversations, young lady.

[Yet when he turns to look at her, he spares her a slight grin. Just what did this girl think she would uncover?]

[O-oh. Well then. Selphie merely shrugs her shoulders at the older man.]

Well, considering we are going off to save the world, you're being awfully flippant.

[If this is coming from someone who is usually so cheerful and positive that she can be like the sunshine itself, it's a fairly serious matter.]

Do you have enough to grab anything else that you might need?

They call us "heroes", do they not? [He takes a brief second to judge her reaction before continuing.]

Now, what would you think if you saw those you look up to were distraught, or worse, actively panicking in the face of inscrutable odds? It would instill an even greater sense of dread and hopelessness, would it not?

[Of course, this is only what he has observed in his own lifetime... However, he may be quite biased.]

I know not what it is like in your world, but the people of my Star look to those with power to guide them - and those with power have the responsibility to lead by example. Even were they to fear the dawn, they cannot and must not allow their subjects to see their weakness.

[With that ~~old man~~ lecture done, he smiles faintly behind his collar once more.]

And, to answer your previous question, I have more than enough.

[Selphie listens and mulls over his words before responding. If there's one thing she knows about herself is that she isn't as strong as some of the others. She's always done her part. Perhaps if she hadn't been in stasis for a year, there might have been more she could have done but for now, she's just one girl from a world where armor isn't necessary.]

I can't bring myself to put on a smile for the sake of others in this situation. I might have done that in the past but I can't do that this time. And maybe I don't know you at all but while there might be a case of nerves, I'm not actively panicking in front of others.

[She forced her gaze away from the old man to stare out at the horizon before them.]

My World, my Star, is different. Power was abused and drives innocent people insane like I'm sure it was on your Star as well. Whatever power I had there, stayed there when I was brought to Crystallis. I'm not as strong as some of the others here, the heroes that I respect as much as my best friends who I went through a literal hell with. What little power I have here is thanks to my Crystal and my the support of my friends and allies here.

We aren't subjects. We're people. Individuals. And I don't want to be ruled and put into a pen like an animal. What we're fighting against has to stop before your Star and mine are wiped out of existence. I know that I'm not a leader but I will sure as hell do my part to make sure that nobody else dies.

[There's enough blood on her hands as it is.]

[Clearly she did not listen nearly enough, for he never hinted that he thought so little of her. Until this moment, that is. He is an old, old man, and one who is not given to changing his ways. Especially in light of a young lady throwing what he perceives as a temper tantrum.]

While you aren't panicking, you certainly are eager to leap upon any who seem to not mesh with your own ideals.

What a shame, to hear of how it was misused on your world. Power was always meant to aid the masses, not hinder in such a manner you describe.

[Yet the way he says it, he is likely alluding to far more. All of this because she thought him odd for wearing a mask when she hid behind her own? Such hypocrisy.]

Let us see what kind of future you and your Crystal would create with your own hands.

[Cloud is distracted as he looks around the crystal aberration that the Imperial Capital has become. Ardyn's voice bumps him back out to reality as the unfamiliar voice trickles in. He glances over and furrows his brow as he looks at him. He was one of the new arrivals, right?]

[He blinks once, seemingly surprised by the commentary of the boy who looked so like another he'd known on Eos, yet so very different ~~even though their hair both looked like that of a chocobo's feathery mane~~.]

[Of course, his rank back home might have colored his perspective slightly...]

[Cloud smiles. The tone that Ardyn so expertly weaves makes the snake sound sincere in his charity.]

Well I mean, we're all here to do our part. Even him. [He doesn't mean it badly and he gives the requisitions officer a nod. He could be giving away supplies for free but then he'd be in trouble later, likely.]

Military folk don't usually get tips. Guess we're gonna have to work extra hard to win so he can go home and spend it, right?

[Ah, but was it insincere? The stars may never know...]

Precisely, young man. [By all means, he so wished naught of ill to come from a lack of payment. Even if he was newly come to this Star. Sometimes he wondered just how much his Shadow had shaken his resolve.] Perhaps not here. I always made certain that those in service to my country were paid for their dues, however.

[Cloud nods. He seems satisfied by this. Ardyn is certainly giving off the impression of a benevolent noble of some sort. Perhaps Cloud can ask about his world sometime once this is done.]

Well, saving this world should definitely a good payment then. A nice place to start at least.

[The blonde flashes him another smile and then jogs off ahead to see what help is needed as they make their advance. Not so fast that Ardyn can't follow if he chooses to,
but with all the haste of an enthusiastic Hero.]

[Alas, his benevolence never came without a cost. Perhaps in time others would come to learn that his help came with a fare was more than this world bargained for. Though he would most certainly speak of his beloved Star some day, if asked. Until then, he'll certainly keep pace. This young man was certainly eager to talk, and he would capitalize on it to get a better feel for the group than he could gain from the likes of Twilight.]

A noble goal. As for the method, I'm afraid no one has deemed fit to inform me.

[He was super new to the fold, having arrived mid-February but only recently reaching Aqures Ixen a handful of days before. He hadn't wish to alert anyone from his world and all to his presence. A move he had kicked himself for, as it appeared he was the only one from Eos present for this... endeavor.]
