Summary: The first phase of endgame begins! The Heroes of Light are on their way to deal with Garland as they’ve left their unfinished businesses in the hands of their friends amongst the NPCs. [Mary is as unwilling to leave the soldiers to the monsters, but to their credit they are well trained and doing as best they can. She places a hand on the princess' shoulder, about to say something to her about duty and a recollection of her time as a pirate. That is until she feels and then sees the glow of the rune.]

EVERYONE GET BACK!

[Rather than run she tightens her grip on Natalia, pulling her closer before throwing down a smoke bomb to aid their escape from that spot.]

What--?! AH!

[Her arms snap up defensively as the smoke goes off, just as everything around them goes deadly silent save for a deep, reverberating THRUM of power. The ground where they were standing bulges upward just before a spray of summoned lava explodes through the craggy crystal. Thanks to Mary's warning, everyone has time to get clear.]

[Once the fire dissipates, soldiers shout out and rush forward to start chiseling at the rune to destroy the magic it possesses.]

[Natalia lowers her hands with a shaken breath.]

Thank you, I...I got distracted.

[She knows she needs to get it together if she's going to be a reliable ally. But it's difficult to ignore everything she sees before them.]

[Mary releases Natalia, giving her a pat on the shoulder as she does so.]

Don't worry about it.

[She taps the side of her head.]

Working with some Job abilities right now. A skill that only a few in my world could truly master, and yet here it's available to most all of us Heroes.

[The glow of the rune was visible to everyone who chanced to look, but moreso to someone with Eagle Vision.]

Just be careful as we go through. We have all these gents watching for us but you never know when the winds might change.

[She frowns a she looks around.]

But if you're stuck on thinking about how wrong all of this is I can understand.

[She blinks, clearly curious. Something that could warn them of traps sounds infinitely useful. After all, she's literally living proof of its value!]

I see! I should like to know what this skill is, in that case, so I may master it myself.

[Natalia inclines her head in both gratitude and understanding.]

Yes, you're right. It wouldn't do at all to be too impatient or reckless.

[She's about to start forward at a slower pace, but Mary's words catch her attention. Natalia hesitates, then lowers her gaze.]

...It looks like they suffered. I don't know why they didn't leave this place when they had the chance.

[It breaks her heart either way.]

[Mary was quiet for a moment, a grim frown on her face.]

Some of them I expect had no chance. It all began in the research center not too far away. I expect there were some, prisoners and the infirm, who had nowhere to go. Others may have believed in Garland and what he stood for. They had faith things would be okay. [And maybe a few were too foolish to flee, but she expects they were in the minority.]

[She glances again at Natalia. They can dwell on the suffering of those who were caught in the midst of all of this but it won't help. Not the victims, and not the Heroes busy steeling their nerves for the battle ahead.]

In my world there's a bare few who can focus their senses and seek out the presence of those around them, as well as their intent. Anyone can train themselves this way with enough time and effort, but to some it comes as naturally as breathing once they learn how. I knew a man like that.

[She takes a long slow breath through her nose.]

And it seems that by mastering the Ninja and Thief Jobs in this world a Hero can gain that skill as well. Which means one of my Brethren made a Job of our training in a past cycle.
