Sephiroth was the one who extended his arm out to bar the way for the soldiers who would insist on trying to follow Mary. He'd seen that look on her body language a handful of times before and knew well to trust in her Eagle-like vision.

Still, as soon as the engineers seemed settled in letting her proceed, Sephiroth ended up turning more in that direction to watch as well. The last thing that would be needed right now, would be for her to become injured -or worse- right before the penultimate fight they were about to enter against Garland.

Even with the traps intercepted, it was with great care that Sephiroth approached the edge of where the floor had fallen away and took a quick survey of the predicament Mary had gotten herself into. Hopefully the soldiers had more sense than to do anything but follow her direction.

"Nice work."

It was clear he was looking for a way to put himself in a position by which she might be able to reach his hand if he stretched down, without him running the risk of being trapped himself.

She was relieved to hear his voice, but she couldn't help but hear a tinge of Edward's sarcastic tones under Sephiroth's own serious ones. This had not gone as planned but she had reacted more on instinct than plan in the first place. As she looked around it became clear to her that the reshaping of this place by the Calamity had warped the ground, and that whatever of the trap had been made before things had gone so wrong had been made even more fatal as a result.

"Seemed a mite easier to take the trap directly than try to take the slow route." Glancing to the right the hallway that should have been there was simply a ravine with the walls and ceilings crumbled and opening to a courtyard beyond. Too far to leap. Perhaps with a wall run and some quick thinking and a prayer for a new ledge but it was still a gamble. "I'm not certain that this trap and the other were originally on the same floor."

Perhaps if the situation hadn't been so serious, there might have been even more sarcasm in Sephiroth's comment; it's a skill he'd not employed for such a long time that he wasn't sure if he knew how to use it anymore. Perhaps sometime in the future -if they were lucky enough to be awarded it- he might get into a position in which he felt he might be more sarcastic once more.

"Indeed. They have been extremely crafty in leaving a booby-trapped city behind them." Sephiroth mused out loud, but the how and -even- when these traps might have been put in not appropriate to discuss right now. Sharp green eyes land again on the gargoyle Mary had kicked.

"Is that gargoyle loose, at all?" Sure it still had a harpoon apparently jammed inside but even if that triggered now all potential causalities were out of the way. If the trap had a cord inside, or even if the statue itself might provide more of a ledge...

In the meantime, Sephiroth crouched just by the ledge -though clearly out of any trajectory of the harpoon- and started examining a path by where he might be able to shimmy around. He's tall, and had faith enough in his strength that he could offer Mary something of a ladder to climb out with.

She was a position ripe for the sarcasm, and she was still kicking herself for not planning ahead better, but there was no regret in her actions. This was the right move as far as she was concerned. All else could be worked out as long as she was breathing and her grip held.

She'd been thinking along the same lines he had and reached out a foot to test the statuary. She felt, could hear, the stone give slightly under her pressure, but not much. "Perhaps. It can probably hold my weight but not for long." A stepping stone then. It was a place to start.

As Sephiroth looked around, his height offered him a bit of a vantage point others might miss. There was a pillar close to the gap, and close to the wall as well. However it looked like its joining to the ceiling was very weak. It wasn't holding up the ceiling, save for a few stones, but those stones were still cemented to it. But only just. Perhaps if he used the wall to push it over...

At the end of the day, there was only so much planning ahead which could have been done, as these traps and how they might be staggered together would surely only be known by the authorities which had laid them. Impossible to have expected for the Esdham reconnaissance to have discovered on their own in the pre-planning before this excursion.

Of course Mary had thought to test the statue as well, Sephiroth felt confident enough in her judgment as he looked up the pillar for a longer moment and then down towards the wall...

"Perhaps I could find you another step, then. Be ready-"

He turned from the edge and made to put himself between pillar and wall, looking carefully at the arrangement and trying to plan for a few moments how exactly the pillar might fall.

With a few sturdy heaves against it, the stones first cracked and like small pebbles they clattered on the floor between him and the edge of where he needed to get Mary out from. Sephiroth didn't want to execute his Combat Mode; he'd need that energy for the fight to come, and so it was with repeated applications of brute strength that eventually dislodged the pillar.

If he could get there, in the aftermath, he'd be back at the edge to catch her.

Mary's gaze moved with Sephiroth's as he looked about, and she was able to guess most of his idea as he went. It wasn't perfect, but it would give her a bit of a boost and maybe she could use one of her ninja skills to close the gap.

As the pillar began to fall she tensed, and then it was a run without looking back. One foot planted hard on the statue, and as it lifted off the stonework crumbled and fell into the chasm below. The push vaulted her high, and onto the pillar as it tipped over. She ran down the length of it before it cracked apart and then leaped out once more.

She wasn't going to clear the gap, the angle was all wrong, but she held out her hands towards Sephiroth. She was at least close enough for him to catch her she hoped.

Once the pillar had fallen free Sephiroth knew he shouldn't remain on that side, that the amount of brick dust and/or debris would prove problematic should he still intend to be in the best position to catch Mary. Even with the physics quickly crunched in his head before he'd moved to execute that plan, he'd known it had been risky-

-hadn't quite factored in the potential for the pillar to crack apart as the assassin ran up it's length. Still, for a good solid two seconds or so it looked like she might well make the gap without any assistance at all...if she'd turned just a little more before making that leap.

Still, he grabbed for her, strongly clamped hands around wrists and let gravity also pull him to the floor with a dull "upmh" of a noise as his front met the unforgiving crystal-concrete of the floor below. The jerk of the momentum stopping urgently shocked his arms into burning -a weaker man would have suffered dislocation- but when the momentum all stopped, Sephiroth held firm.

"-come on."

An argumentative, not-so-strong muscle on his right side wouldn't put up with such strain for long but hopefully Mary took the hint not to hang around.
