Summary: The first phase of endgame begins! The Heroes of Light are on their way to deal with Garland as they’ve left their unfinished businesses in the hands of their friends amongst the NPCs. If that's our only collective plan for defeating Garland, perhaps we deserve to lose.

[Why would he allow such a thought to cross his mind? For the sake of a joke, it really doesn't seem worth it. Still, he's here, and she's here, and they're just sitting together as allies with the same purpose. That's something she can appreciate.]

...Are you worried about the battle?

[Rukia doesn't look at him as she says it, keeping her gaze fixed on the horizon ahead. He's young, and likely hasn't seen much combat in his lifetime. But she knows he's experienced hardships enough. If he needs reassurance, she can perhaps give him that peace of mind.]

Nah, we got nothin' to be worried about. There's versions of these events where we've already won. It's just a matter of finding out way to that timeline.

[That answer probably means nothing to Rukia, but it's how Santa keeps himself moving when things seem hopeless.]

Oh? You didn't read the scandalous letters I exchanged with Jade when Mognet malfunctioned? Surely you know what type of man I prefer by now.

[She smiles, clearly enjoying herself. Nonetheless, the matter at hand is a serious one, so she sobers when the conversation moves in that direction.]

Timeline? Like the one we experienced in the September of the previous year?

[He wasn't there for that as far as she knows, but then again, he was part of the other group. He may have experienced those time loops like so many of the rest of them did.]

That would provide some level of security, wouldn't it.

I've blocked that day from my mind. I try not to know any more about the dating habits of old hags than I have to.

[It's way too embarrassing remembering his own letters from that day, and how long it took him to catch on to the glitch. So that day never happened, as far as he's concerned.]

I guess. [A lot of the Sage's weird visions and stuff happened while he and the other second-string Heroes were still stuck under Kalki's control. But it sounded right enough.] Yeah. There's always versions that are better, but also ones that are worse. It makes you wanna keep working to get to that better world.

[It's not hope so much as angrily rejecting versions of events that are shit, but it helps Santa get through the nine years day.]

[Rukia just chuckles against her knuckle, her slim shoulders shaking in mirth. She could push it further, but 1) She's a lady, and 2) That's Jade's job. Best to turn to more serious matters considering what they're up against.]

I see. And you're not yet certain which branch of history we happen to be traveling, correct? And yet, you don't seem particularly uncertain or doubtful.

[Santa shrugs. He's still half-waiting for Akane's powers to kick in and the series of events between 'now' and a 'good' ending to no longer be a series of question marks.]

Worrying about it ain't gonna change anything for the better. And if there's a world out there where we win- and there is, because there are infinite possible worlds- then what we're trying isn't impossible. We've got a chance.

[A philosopher would probably tear his logic to shreds, but whatever. He believes what he needs to believe to keep himself moving forward... and occasionally backwards...toward that true ending where everybody important survives.]

I believe that as well. I don't think it's beyond us to convince Garland of our path. We have our goals mapped, and we've got the tools to reach them.

[Defeat Garland, get the other black crystals, fix the Soul Divider, communicate with the Calamity and make it whole again. One step forward, and again.]
