[He won't mind it, on account of a similar hint playing at the top of his ears - conveniently hidden from view with his overly long hair. He really should get that cut, once this was all over. As she slides her arm around his waist and back, he shook his head.]

Don't worry, I will.

[The blade disappears from view as he sighs. "To keep those I care for safe," huh. Now where had he heard that before? Ah, right.]

"...To protect the things that matter, like my friends." [A beat.] My 'brother' was never the smooth talker he tried to be.

[Not like he was much better, but still!]

-But, that is one thing we agree about. [He squeezes her hand slightly. If she would insist on trying to protect him too, then he'll accept their mutually watching each other's backs.] I too will do what I must; I just wanted you to know you weren't alone.

[There is a definite relaxing into the hug on her part, although Lydia kept her head on his shoulder a bit longer. Squeezing his hand back, and taking a deep breath before letting him have his space back at least. Enough to not be hugged anyways. She is keeping that hand held.]

[A smile, but there is determination in dark eyes that she is making sure meet his own.]

You aren't either. You've never been anyone other than Ira to me, and you don't have to be anyone other than yourself.

[The smile grows a bit, more like her usual playful self.]

Darkness has never bothered me, considering I'm more comfortable among the dead than the living, and my whole life has been a dark room.

[He lets her go when she pulled away ever so slightly, not wanting to force anything (wait, force what?); nodding at her words of gratitude. Though what she said next gave him pause. "You aren't either" was almost as easily brushed aside as how obvious his eyes widening had likely become.

... Of course. Anyone here would have thought that. None of them knew the guy he was a mimicry of. Yet, he smiles - albeit awkwardly.]

Not that I ever doubted that, but- [He rubs the back of his neck with his now free hand.] It's... good to hear.

[Clearing his throat, he shakes his head.]

You know, I'm still learning what that is.
