Where you were or what you were doing— It does not really matter. Not any more. Everything around you freezes, nearly as if time itself stopped, as if the world was frozen in time. And before you have a chance to understand what is happening, you can hear a voice right behind you.
"Kali Shashidhwaja."
Should you turn around, you may see a child who seems to be the only one aside from you unaffected by what is happening. And as she stares right at you, it makes no doubt these strange words are aimed at you. But before you can reply to her, the world around you collapses. Reality twists and shatters... Or maybe you are the one who is collapsing and shattering away from reality as you know it. No matter what the answer is, it will only take a few seconds for you to find yourself sinking into a void, Crystallis vanishing into the distance. There is nothing but darkness as far as the eye can see.
And once again you feel different: all the powers from your Jobs are fading. Not only that, but you might find that your Crystal is gone and your clothes back to what they were before you woke up in Crystallis. It is silent, cold and before long it feels as though life itself is slipping out of you... And yet, slowly the world reforms around you. The darkness fades away and a new world appears, yet at the same time this is not a world.
This is a memory. The question is, is it yours or that of someone else?

"Wait."
Yuffie took a step towards Doug trying to follow him. She ignored the guards but she assumed they'd be close behind her. Thank Gaia she's fast.
no subject
"She doesn't look to be one of ours, sir!" The grunt trailing behind responds, and the superior barks back, angered. "Does it matter? Get her!"
Unfortunately for Yuffie, the younger Doug was especially quick on his feet. And he knew just about every nick and corner of town to duck into to evade chase – he’d never thought he’d ever have to use those skills in a situation like this.
Seemingly enough, it also seems like someone else had the same idea, for if Yuffie’s quick enough to stay on his tail? She’ll have evaded all the soldiers... except seemingly one, who ducks out from a corner to try and grab her.
"Hey, wait! Yuffie!"
The voice is hushed, but uncannily familiar despite the fact they're covered head to toe in the same armor as those soldiers. They'll be trying to drag her into a corner to evade the attention of pursuing Sechs.
no subject
Then she turned looking up at the helmet that kept Doug's face obscured. They were perhaps a little to close for Yuffie's comfort but she was annoyed that it took him so long to find her.
"What the hell do you think your doing? What's going on here and why are you dressed like that?!"
no subject
"Hey, what do you think? Look at my eyes, my ears and take a guess."
He removes his helmet to demonstrate. Indeed, he had pointed ears and silver eyes too. Very obvious dwarven tells to any Sechs, and it certainly seemed to be the case for the one soldier he encountered and had to knock out. They may have decided to take their chances with a dwarven child, but he doubted they'd extend that same mercy for what appears to be an adult survivor. Noticing a back door – probably to someone’s home and fortunately one that hasn’t been burned down, he’ll open it, motioning Yuffie to follow him.
"Look, Yuffie, I know these guys - they’d kill me on sight if I just waltzed in as-is, so I had to find a disguise."
He already knew upon waking up here, there was no way he was going to prevent the massacre from being carried out. Indeed, he was already too late by the time he rushed here. The least he can do is to ensure nothing bad happened to anyone else who was unfortunate enough to end up in this dream, much less on the receiving end of his younger self’s anger. That sight left an unsettling feeling within him. Quickly, he'll rush to one of the windows first to scan the situation outside: the soldiers present were still alerted, but judging from the chatter they seemed to have lost track of the "intruder." He'll back away out of their sight, before facing Yuffie and continuing.
"Anyway, there’s been a massacre here. Those guys outside? They’re from the Sechs Empire. They invaded my hometown and… they killed everyone." There’s a noticeable grimace on his face as he mentions the last part. This wasn’t a memory he liked to recall. “They only let me – the younger me – survive because I happened to be out of town when it happened."
no subject
She sighed softly listening to his warning and hearing the familiar tale. People invading to wipe out homes must be frequent. She rose her palm to her forehead taking a look around the house before stepping up next to Doug.
"Would the other you really have hurt me? He didn't look okay." She paused looking at Doug. "Are you okay?"
no subject
Then again, would someone from a completely different world like her even know what dwarves were? Didn't matter, now wasn't the time to debate that. He pauses at Yuffie's question - there was the issue of his younger self being within the village. He still wasn't sure how to handle him yet, or even if his past self would even understand the situation.
"I'm fine, don't worry about me. As for the other me, I... don't know," He places a hand on his head, already feeling a bit of sweat despite the cool autumn weather. He wasn't entirely fine with the idea of being back here, but he had to keep his cool for both their sakes. "But think about it: coming back to a sight like this? I don't think he's in the right state of mind for anything rational right now."
no subject
"I guess so."
Her shoulders fell slightly realizing that Doug was right. His younger self... maybe they had to make him see? She didn't know but there had to be a reason why she was here. She stared at Doug keeping her gaze trained on his face.
"I don't think you're really okay." It was a statement and Yuffie wasn't leaving an room for argument. She half expecting Doug to suddenly stop being calm and go into shock himself. How did he feel reliving this?

"Let's..." He tenses, wanting to avert his gaze when Yuffie stares him down with a statement like that. It did nothing to settle the uneasy feeling building in his gut. "Let's put that aside for now. We've gotta get to that kid, fast."

"If we're going to find him, we're going to have to deal with those guys." Doug carefully peeks out, surveying their patrolling patterns. "With any luck, that little side trip I made earlier might help distract them for a bit."
Almost on cue, one soldier runs up to one of the superiors, clearly out of breath as he shouts.
"S-Sir! Something's gone down at the mine!" The other one's attention sharply turns, alerted. "What?! Give me a status report!"
The grunt explains that something, or someone has set off a trap and that monsters were currently overwhelming the units that were sent to investigate the mine. The superior curses under his breath. He told them to be wary of not messing around with anything that would wake up the dragons, much less the powerful Bane Dragon that slept within.
Soon, the crowds of soldiers would clear up, reduced to just a small number of them now. Even if they draw attention now, the reduced units would be more than enough for the both of them and anyone else they stumbled across.
"Haha, would you look at that. It worked," A grin creeps up onto Doug's face, as he gets his blade out. Just because he couldn’t change anything didn’t mean he couldn’t still get his revenge on the people that manipulated him. Preemptively. He turns back to Yuffie. "All right, now's our chance. Get ready."
no subject
"It worked?"
Yuffie looked at him curiously. Did he somehow do that or was it his younger self? There was more going on here but it was Doug's memory which meant that Yuffie couldn't hope to know what that was.
She sighed before a smile slipped across her lips. "Right." She got her large Shuriken from her back and looked at the materia that were placed inside of it. She had Ice, Steal, Throw and Shiva. She didn't know what she'd need but it was a decent line up. Not including what was in her armband.
Yuffie followed Doug her eyes flicking from the back of his head to those around them. "Can't you just walk through them with your disguise?"
