Event || In Your Worst Memory

Characters: All Heroes of Light. Only those who signed-up can start a memory.
Where: Interdimensional Rift
When: May 27th - May 30th
Summary: The Heroes of Light relive some of their worst memories, with a twist. All characters participating in this will be physically missing from Crystallis for the duration of the event.
Warning: It depends on the memory.

Where you were or what you were doing— It does not really matter. Not any more. Everything around you freezes, nearly as if time itself stopped, as if the world was frozen in time. And before you have a chance to understand what is happening, you can hear a voice right behind you.

"Kali Shashidhwaja."

Should you turn around, you may see a child who seems to be the only one aside from you unaffected by what is happening. And as she stares right at you, it makes no doubt these strange words are aimed at you. But before you can reply to her, the world around you collapses. Reality twists and shatters... Or maybe you are the one who is collapsing and shattering away from reality as you know it. No matter what the answer is, it will only take a few seconds for you to find yourself sinking into a void, Crystallis vanishing into the distance. There is nothing but darkness as far as the eye can see.

And once again you feel different: all the powers from your Jobs are fading. Not only that, but you might find that your Crystal is gone and your clothes back to what they were before you woke up in Crystallis. It is silent, cold and before long it feels as though life itself is slipping out of you... And yet, slowly the world reforms around you. The darkness fades away and a new world appears, yet at the same time this is not a world.

This is a memory. The question is, is it yours or that of someone else?

K'pandolu shook her head in turn, frowning at the scene in front of them. "And leave you with these phantoms?" It didn't seem right. And yet- what use could she be? She was far less at ease in the dark than he, though, tail twitching in unease, and still she stayed to hold vigil until the memory began to loosen its hold on her.

Vincent tilted his head to regard her, crimson eyes watching the way she moved, her expressions. After several moments, he gave a slow blink. "You are kind, and I am not worth it, Miss Tohka."

He seemed surprised, honestly. That a stranger, someone who was uninvolved and unaware, would bother. These were his memories, his phantoms and regrets. His punishment and sin. Kindness from another was an unusual concept to him regarding them.

K'pnadolu turned to consider him in turn, head tilted slightly. "It's no more than I'd hope for from another," she said after a moment, and shrugged lightly. "It's within my power to give. And this- I'd simply rather not leave you alone with it." Sentimental, maybe, and it would probably have given her trouble in Ul'dah. But this wasn't Ul'dah. And whether or not there was anything else to learn, she still wondered about it.

"It...is in the past. But it remains with me everyday." Vincent replied after a moment, still watching her as if trying to puzzle her out. Another breath, and he got to his feet and came closer. Tall, and he moved as if he was at home in the darkness. The black of his clothing hiding him, save for the red of his cloak and the glint of metal-gauntlet along his left arm that ended in wicked claws. Quiet steps, despite metal covering part of his boots as he still watched her with that crimson gaze.

Then turning, a breath in and out, and pointing to the scenes being replayed. "Dr. Lucrecia Crescent." Identifying the female, giving some context perhaps. "I had been assigned as her bodyguard."

"As our important memories always are." Her point remained, though.

She watched as he moved, noting those details. Someone used to the dark, who had walked in it- But she held herself still, eyes on his, ears flicking briefly when she realised how much taller he was than she'd first thought. The gauntlet and cloak stood out, though- was that connected with these memories somehow?

She looked back at the scene, and nodded. "It seems the sort of task you'd be suited to," she said. Someone who could quietly watch another's back, not alerting any intruders to their presence until it was too late… "What kind of dangers did they anticipate?"

Vincent was quiet, watching the scene play for a moment. Gathering his thoughts, and how he wanted to respond. "It was classified research. We were based in a small town in a mansion." Wasn't it obvious what kind of dangers that would present? "I do not know why I was assigned to guard her, only that it was my mission."

And Turks always completed a mission.

It had become passion too, with Lucrecia's smile, her warmth. He'd been hurt when she'd pulled away, after he found out she'd worked with his father. But he hadn't blamed her for his death. He didn't blame her still, even as he was sorrowful he couldn't go back and spare them this pain.

He never had fully figured out what had driven her to Hojo. What had driven her to participate, experimenting on her own child when she had seemed so warm before. As bodyguard it wasn't his place to question, but as a man... Well, the results of that conflict were currently playing out for any who watched.

"She was an assistant to the project. The other in the memories..." His expression remained stoic, but there was a gleam in crimson eyes and an undertone of pure hatred in the cool voice as he continued. "was Professor Hojo."

Classified… That gave her a vague idea, but without more familiarity with the world, it would be difficult to pin down the subject more closely. She nodded. "It sounds a suitable place for such an endeavour. I suppose… that was all your superiors thought was necessary, then."

She went quiet for a moment, looking over the scene for any further details. One ear flicked back for a moment at Vincent's voice, wondering- what had sparked that? "The leader of the project, I take it."

"Not then. Not until later, I presume." Of course, by that point he had been locked away. After being tortured and experimented on. A calming breath in and out, his eyes closing briefly the only other sign of his reasserting calm and control.

"You have the pieces now, if you wish to make some sense of what you see."

She tilted her head for a moment, thinking. Slowly, she spoke, putting the pieces together as she saw them. "An experiment, in a remote environment… Something dangerous, then? Or something that could easily be denied, if something went wrong… And- it seems that something did. Is that right?"

Vincent didn't bother to correct her or comment on her line of thinking regarding the location or dangers. ShinRa was likely to use both of those lines of thinking and more. "To my knowledge, the original project they were assigned there for was a success in ways they hadn't anticipated, though not to their original speculation."

Indeed, if he recalled--they had been trying to create a superior human-Ancient hybrid. There had been more, but Vincent had concerned himself primarily with relevant details of the Jenova Project: S. That had been part of his mission briefing, when assigned as Dr. Crescents bodyguard.

"Things unrelated to that experiment were complicated in unfortunate ways" It was amazing how he could keep his voice so dispassionate, when clearly he was the same man in the memories. Who'd felt such emotion at the time, as to make him speak out and question.

"Their original speculations? What were they?" K'pandolu tilted her head, curious. That hadn't seemed quite so obvious.

No doubt whatever length of time had passed had had some effect. "Outside elements, you mean?"

"It was a research project. Investigating what was suspected as a remnant of an ancient race." All that Vincent was inclined to say on the subject, though he had guessed that she was unfamiliar with some of what he explained. Some of what she was seeing.

That was alright with him.

"No. It wouldn't be until later that outside elements interfered." He had found that out much later, after 30 long years of sleep in a coffin. Interrupted only once, and then he had returned to his exile. Until Cloud and the others had awakened him once more.

There was bitterness in his voice now as he spoke, self-derision. "Certainly, you can see for yourself the complications. It's being played before us as we speak." No, he had been the complication. His feelings, his emotions. He had learned, and paid dearly for it. Until that mission, he had been a model Turk.

"An ancient race?" That piqued her curiosity, though as far as getting more information on that went… well. It hadn't been obvious from the memories, and asking him…

She glanced at him, one ear twitching slowly. "You cared," she said, carefully. If that was considered a 'complication', then… that surely meant the people involved hadn't wanted him to. Hadn't wanted feelings, and that seemed incredible to her. "And they… had no room for that." She tilted her head, inviting confirmation.

Vincent just raised an eyebrow at her. Seeking to see if she'd connect any more of the pieces. Turks weren't supposed to care. They were professionals to the utmost. And until that mission, until he'd met her, he had been a model Turk.

She huffed at little at him, and looked away, thinking, beginning to pace. "You said- you could have stopped the experiment." …Or tried, she suspected. If Doctor Crescent had been as resistant to suggestion as he seemed… "As a bodyguard? But- it would be difficult to protect someone from themselves. If they were to have their mind entirely set upon it…"

She turned towards him, frowning. "What did they think of you?" she asked.
