Really nice to see you. Midna nearly visibly cringed at the words. How could Zelda say such a thing, after knowing and seeing the things that had happened in the Hyrule she had visited? How could this girl, the one chosen by the goddess -- be happy to see someone like her? The harbinger of darkness that had cast the shadow across the kingdom...

"Zelda," she nodded only slightly with her head in greeting, concealing all traces of the uncertainty that swam below the surface. "Keeping busy as always, I see."

Zelda nodded, "It helps." She had to keep herself busy.

She spent so much time thinking and trying to work things out. Sometimes it was better to do so with others.

Zelda wanted to talk to Midna about what happened. She hadn't seen her friend for well over a month and she knew the reason why. Midna has always protected herself behind the mysteries that she built around herself and now Zelda knew the truth. She could understand her worry but they were friends and Zelda knew the good that rested in Midna's heart.

Her gaze was gentle as she continued. "How are you doing?"

Her palms upturned as she shook her head, "As well as can be, I suppose, though I could do without meeting like this. It seems that just as another crisis is about to rise is when all the little heroes tend to gather," she looked away, over the crowds again, and crossing her arms.

It was awkward. This was awkward. Clearing her throat, the imp wasn't even sure how to bring everything that had happened to light... or if she should. But knowing Zelda, well... trying to keep it a secret or forgetting about it entirely wasn't an option. And in truth... didn't she owe the other girl more than that?

"I... suppose I owe you an explanation..."

Zelda shifted feeling a little unsure. She did want to know but she didn't want to force Midna. She took a deep breath and then gave her friend a nod.

"I don't know if it's owed but, I'd really like one." She didn't want to guess but then this might not be the best place.

"Did you want to go somewhere else to talk?"

There was a pause, before her head finally bobbed forward with a quiet, "Mm." Keeping her eyes averted, Midna floated up into the air, her hands at her sides as she waited for Zelda to take the lead. The other girl was much more familiar with the grounds of the observatory anyway, she figured.

And as she moved along through the air silently, her thoughts raced with where to even begin her sordid tale. By the time they were finally away from the prying eyes of the other heroes, the imp clasped one hand around the bicep of her other, looking ashamed.

"Well... so... now you know. It was my fault -- what happened to the Zelda of my time." Even though thousands of years had passed, and her intentions had been good -- as a Twili she was surely once more an enemy to the royal bloodline of Hyrule.

Zelda lead Midna outside to the garden where the dumbapple tree curved to the ground. Just as Genesis said, it wasn't bearing any fruit. She sighed softly and then waved Midna over to a bench so that they could sit together. Of course she wouldn't force the girl to sit.

"Why would I think that?" Her voice is measured and calm. "Zelda trusted you, even though you made a mistake."

Zelda smiled slightly, trying her best to lighten the mood. "As silly as it sounds, I do believe Zelda's to be a good judge of character. It's in our blood." Midna might be a princess of darkness but she wasn't evil. Just the other side to a coin and while those in the light can do bad things so can those in the darkness.

"I know that you feel guilt Midna. I remember the first day we met. It makes a lot more sense now. What I mean is... you're still my friend."

Midna opted for the air rather than the bench, though her posture was rigid. "Tch. The only mistake I made that day was allowing the princess to go through with that stupid choice she made," the imp's teeth grit against one another as her eye shifted uncomfortably away from the scene.

Silence fell over her as she considered that last bit. You're still my friend, it was nearly painful enough to wince at. But Midna remained in place, stone-faced, determined to focus on the reality of the situation. "Don't you see... that someone like me could bring about your end as well?"

Though they were two sides of a coin, the undertones of a timeless war still loomed over their fates. "Light and shadow... can't mix."
goddessofthesky: (kiss huh?)

[personal profile] goddessofthesky 2015-08-14 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Zelda shook her head. "If you do then it's my choice." It was her choice to stay close to the mysterious woman in the first place and while she has learned more it hasn't colored her opinion of Midna.

"Light and shadow might never mix but they do stand side by side." She watched Midna with a wistful smile. She didn't want them to have to stop being friends. She considered Midna one of her few close friends here who always seem to be able to peer pass her mask.

"Won't you stay by my side?"

It was like a punch to the gut. Wasn't Zelda listening? Zant, and worse, the great evil king were still her world's greatest threat. If they were to come after her... the memory was a warning. Though her life was spent thousand of years in Hyrule's future, this Zelda was in danger of feeling their wrath.

There was just no way she could...

"Even if I wanted to..." her voice was quiet, and she hunched her shoulders, gathering herself. Her cheeks flushed just slightly, while she turned away. Zelda had been a friend to her all this time, and Midna -- wasn't so sure that she could call herself the same.

"Being with Link is hazardous enough, I'm sure," she tried to deflect with humour, hiding her face completely now that her back was turned. "Why would you want to make things even harder on yourself?" In order to just 'be friends' ...

Zelda understood what Midna was trying to do but she couldn't bring herself to laugh. It's true that Link was often a handful but she never saw it as trouble. It was the same with Midna. Whatever darkness, or threats the princess might bring with her, Zelda was willing to take that chance.

She looked up at the sky watching as her loftwing flew over head. Her voice was soft but with the confidence and conviction that couldn't be rivaled.

"Because you're worth it." She paused and hoped that her simple answer made sense. Even if it meant risking her own life, Zelda knew that being friends with Midna and having the imp in her life was worth the risk of pain. It was the same with Link and Sephiroth and others whom she called friends.

It was a good thing that she wasn't facing Zelda, because those words caught her completely off guard. For once, her expression was sombre, the realization that she wouldn't be able to shake the girl was setting in... And the reality that she would have to protect her now was even more clear.

The matriarch of the Hylian royal blood line... is she could keep her safe, maybe she could repent for the missteps her ancestors had taken all those years ago.

"You know... what I am now, don't you? A descendant of the Twili..." she turned, looking over her shoulder at Zelda. "A tribe banished from Hyrule for the crimes we committed in the past... in your future."

“I know that.” Zelda could understand such measures but she wasn’t going to condemn a single person for something that hasn’t happened yet. She knew that Midna had a kind soul and that no matter what happened she’d be there. Zelda knew, with all her heart, that Midna wasn’t a bad person.

“Twilight or not. You are yourself.” She looked over at the Imp with a smile. “And it’s you who’ve I’ve grown fond of. Maybe it’s just here, in this world but…”

Zelda looked back up at the sky. “I want to stay friend with you. Here we are outside of our times, and the rules of light and dark have changed. If there is any place we can be free from the laws of our world; it’s here and while it might not last forever, I’ll cherish every moment of it.”

It was almost infuriating. The way that she refused to listen, that understanding tone, the sincerity of her words... and most of all, the way that Midna wanted to believe in them. She continued to stand there, a blank look on her face, as she turned once more towards the blonde.

"It can't be helped, I suppose... I can't blame you for wanting to be around me, anyway," with an exaggerated sigh that lifted her shoulders, the imp leaned back in the air again, floating, arms behind her head as though to emphasize the nonchalance she tried so hard to project. "But I guess you're right... the rules of our worlds don't apply in a place like this... So," she continued, flicking her gaze to the side, "I suppose there's no harm in an alliance -- for now."

An alliance. It was the closest she could bring herself to calling them friends... 'for now.'

Zelda looked over at her with a wide smile. It was like Midna had her own language for things and more and more Zelda felt like she finally understood. "yeah." She almost wanted to laugh just because of the warmth that swelled in her heart.

Midna was a close friend and unlike others Zelda knew they shared something special. She couldn't say what it was and she couldn't say it was anything she had experienced before. Maybe it was because she was the first Zelda but she felt like that bond would outlast life times.

"You really are amazing Midna. I'm honored to be you ally."

And so she should be! Landing on the ground again, her arms found their way to her chest again, crosing in front of her as she looked around to make sure there was still no one coming. "And... one more thing."

Her eye stayed away from Zelda's, looking at anything else in the room that she could focus on. "I don't know... how much of what you heard that foul windbag say, but... if you could... keep it to yourself..."

Midna cleared her throat awkwardly. After what had happened to her people, she could hardly call herself a Princess. Hearing it from anyone else -- would have been even worse.

End here?

Zelda brings her finger over her lips. "Your secret is safe with me." She can understand not wanting to be known as a princess. A few people called Zelda a princess, including Midna, when they had first met and she found that it was a little uncomfortable.

While her father might have been in charge she wasn't a princess, and yet she knew it was her future to stay on the planet below and start what will grow into the kingdom of Hyrule. Maybe then she'd consider herself a princess.

Looking over Zelda again, there was a small nod from the imp, the only thing to show that she approved of the other girl's secrecy on the matter. It did make her feel more vulnerable, now that someone else knew the horrible truth, but... if there was someone she had to choose to trust...

"Well," Midna pushed herself up off the floor again, gliding in the air as she moved to leave the room, "now that that's all settled, I suppose we should go and see what more trouble those heroes have decided to get themselves into, hm?" and off she drifted, to rejoin the gathering once more.
