"There were a few, but not any of the Heroes of Light, fortunately, or unfortunately. I feel for the innocent people caught in this mess," the former general replied towards him as he asked her for a status update. She was getting one from him and he was getting one from her.

Selen would appreciate it if she could use her own powers. She was more confident with them than these new ones, but she managed to adjust enough. Selen was just a monster in a less literal term when it came to fighting. She spent most of her life being a human who was feared by a lot of humans. She probably had a hidden track record that no one knew of either. Selen was a bit mysterious in her own way.

"I see, well I am glad for that. Especially, since there are so many people here," in the crystal. Selen hoped so, but she didn't withdraw her sword yet. She still had it if there was a chance they might get attacked. Selen looked back at him after he asked her about Luke and after Selen was looking the other way for enemies.

"I believe I have," she said, "why do you ask?" she mused giving him a smile still. Selen wasn't sure if she could make things better for Luke, but she tried her best.

Well, that was fortunate. If there weren’t enough Heroes to fight, then more civilians would die. It was inevitable that some of them would succumb to the monster attacks. In all honesty, death still didn’t bother him, as a whole. He wouldn’t necessarily feel remorse toward others that he lacked an attachment to. And even if Selen could scare most people with her brutality, Gaara wouldn’t be fazed by it. Most likely, he had committed worse, and also seen much more atrocious behavior within his own village.

“It is unavoidable,” he remarked in a low tone, “but we can try to limit the number of casualties. More importantly… the crystallized individuals here would suffer permanent death, if attacked. We must protect them.”

There was a pause as he searched for the right words. He didn’t want to give too much away, and doubted that Luke would confide in Selen, but maybe she had picked up a few hints from him. “He seems to enjoy your company. He has been… upset lately, I believe. Two of his companions were recently crystallized.”

Yes, minimizing the casualties was a good idea in her book as well. It was definitely inevitable to deal with people dying. It was a natural process in these kinds of dangerous situations, and finding a safer ground for the civilians that were saved. Death didn't affect her but it still made her worry about how many more deaths there are. That was also true, but they both have their own dark pasts to deal with.

"Unfortunately," she replied giving him a bit of a sigh, "Yes. That is true we can minimize damage. That's all we can hope for. There's not enough of us to save everyone."

She was being realistic here because it was the truth. There was no way things would run as smoothly as they should anyway. If that was the case, saving people would always be easy, "Indeed, I do not wish for them to see a permanent death. There's much to be done and we cannot lose them," she mused briefly as she walked over, looking at the people encased in the crystals. Selen kept a straight face as Gaara said those words to her. Well, she did know that Luke had a lot of things going on with him. Some of which she knew of and some she didn't know of. She did remember that they talked about his crystallized companions.

"So I have heard from him. the boy does seem down. I think he's doing better from the last time I see him, but I am not sure since I haven't seen him since."

Interestingly enough, he appreciated her realism. There were some people here – civilians suddenly turned into heroes – that might not have understood the concept. Not to mention, death hadn’t been permanent, up to this point. What had suddenly changed? Maybe it was decided that Crystallis didn’t need so many heroes, after all.

“No, there isn’t.” Gaara chanced a look behind him, gaze settling on one particular individual. If given a choice, he would prioritize who to save. He wasn’t attached to every single crystallized person in this room, and he wouldn’t be able to escape with all of them. If that made him terrible or selfish… then so be it.

Luke had been pushing himself so much, it was surprising he could even find time for social visits. “I see. When did you last meet?”

No they would not. They were civilians by heart and no matter what they did they couldn't understand the situation with those who fought, even if they sympathized with it. The world was a cruel place and Selen never doubted the troubles that came with it. She knew the reality of many outcomes. It wasn't by choice but she was a Hero of Light and she supposed fulfilling her duty as one was entertaining and also rewarding in its own way. Selen didn't know but it made things more obviously realistic and that death was around the corner for those who were not cautious enough. Selen wondered about that since they kept bringing people in ever so often.

Selen was selfish too. She would save only the ones that mattered because she knew that not every single life form could be saved even if she died. Her death would be in vain and many more deaths would follow. She was obviously in an agreement with Gaara in that regard. She wasn't as kind as she seemed sometimes. Selen had a warm heart but it was sometimes frozen. Luke was indeed pushing him too much. As far as Selen remembered, there was always some strain she caught from talking with Luke.

"A while ago. I can't give you a correct date, but I am certain there were many things we have discussed."
