[There's short guy, white haired guy...Ed...and other guy. How could he trust them to protect Ed???]
no subject
I got it covered. But everybody's gotta stay close, and don't move too fast, or you'll break the illusion.
[Hopefully he'll be able to hold it for a 15 minute walk.]
But if we gotta go anywhere else, it'll be easier for us to get changed into some less conspicuous clothes so I can focus all my mojo on Antlers. [Santa may want a suit. And a hat. For, like, the mission and shit.]
no subject
Right, so. This is K'pandolu, Jack, Santa, Mordecai and Dylas. Everyone, this is Ash. He's a good friend of mine, and this is is tavern. He also knows this town like the back of his hand, so in case we get split up for some reason, stick with him.
[Ed is already a reasonably tall guy, and Ash has at least 4 inches on him. He clasps a big hand on his friend's shoulder and looks the group over.]
Everyone, this is Doc. He also knows this city like the back of his hand, including all the places you wish you hadn't known existed. And we're gonna go meet Maris Hanlon, who's the person usually the person responsible for them. And if anyone's got such a wide variety of clothing laying around somewhere, it'll be here.
[Because really, what are you people even wearing? Good thing Santa has that spell. It doesn't matter how modestly K'pandolu is dressed, she'd most likely be scandalous by 1901 standards. Good thing Ash is a hard guy to rattle. Strange that Santa used a spell without any apparent incantation, components or books, but Ash was never an expert on magic anyway. That's Ed's job.
After stopping to get one of the kitchen workers to cover for him up front, Ash rejoins the group as they head outside. He'll lead them around the back of the building and towards town using the least busy streets they can. That's a feat, considering it seems to be busy everywhere.
Ed is pensive as he follows close behind Ash, giving his friend a lot of thoughtful looks when he was turned away.
They move from the industrialized part of town towards more crowds in commercial and residential areas. The signs around them transition slowly from English into Chinese, which is the most obvious clue of where they're headed. Chinatown is small and congested. There are plenty of stores and street stalls to browse as they pass by.
Some of the more observant members of the group might get the feeling they're being followed, though. Hard to tell from who with all these people milling around.]
no subject
[rude! It's hardly as though she's going sleeveless.
Maybe it's just nerves, and the crowd that gives that feeling, but… She glances around all the same, ears twitching.]
Is anyone else feeling… uneasy?
no subject
What, you not feelin' well? Shit, we better not be getting any old timey germs. [Isn't that what happens in sci-fi books and shit? Travelers from different times or different worlds get wrecked because they don't have the immune system to fight off the germs they encounter.]
no subject
[Dylas, who is still seven and a half feet tall despite the illusion magic at work, has ears that are sensitive enough to pick out footsteps that are more or less consistent with their own. He's loud when he verbally calls out Santa, but he's quieter on the second go about.]
We've got someone tailing us. And not. My tail. I mean, following us. I can't figure out who yet.
no subject
Oh, they're being followed? Awe-some. "Be right back." Jack is banking on his ability to blend in better than the rest of them to fade back from the group, maybe get closer to whoever is following them, or get them to make a move if he notices that the group looks like they're splitting up.
no subject
Just as Jack turns to take off, Ash and Ed stop too. Ash wrinkles his nose for a moment, frowning. Ed can't seem to figure it out either, but the lack of clues is a clue itself. Before he can say anything, Ash cuts in.]
Oh, great. It's your little Shadow friend, Doc.
[As Jack backs around, a shape seems to form from the shadows of a nearby alley. It almost seems to take on a human shape, with glowing blue eyes, before the shadows suddenly part and a young man steps out near him. Any locals walking nearby are a bit startled by this, but don't seem to react to severely. Like guys forming out of shadows is just a thing that happens.
The man wears a bright red pinstripe suit and red hat, which make him stand out like a lighthouse in the sea of dark colored suits everywhere. He looks over Jack's shoulders at the others, before looking back to Jack. His voice is teasing.]
Hi there~
[A few yards back with the others, Ed just groans.]
We do not have time for him.
no subject
Not interested in what you're sellin'.
[Sheesh. They already have enough on their hands, and guys popping out of nowhere is not on the list of things Barkeep wants to deal with today. He rolls his eyes and turns back the way they were headed, hoping to walk away from this nuisance.]
no subject
Well...that's pretty freakin' badass. Can you guys do anythin' cool like that? Maybe we should get him to show us around...
[Distractions aren't great for holding the illusion over everyone, and if any more flashy people pop out of the woodwork, the spell's likely to start faltering.]
no subject
We have places to be; my apologies.
[though she doesn't sound it.]
no subject
Ask later. Distract now.
"Captain Jack Harkness, and who are you?"
no subject
[The man is very amused by the varied reactions he's getting from the group. Annoyance from Ash was normal, but not usually Ed. And two of their little party at least seem interested in him, which is great.]
Showing some out-of-towners around, Doc? Why didn't you say so? Who knows this town better than me?
[He tips his hat at Santa. He would love to show folks around. Maybe do lunch! Before he says anything else, Ed cuts in with an exasperated tone.]
Everyone, this is Salieri. I'll... explain him later. Salieri, you know I can't make you go away. But if you're coming along, you're going to help us out and not be a nuisance. Alright? We're heading to see Maris, and I can explain to you what's going on once we get there.
[Ed almost talks to Salieri like he was scolding a teenager, but Salieri just nods. Ed and Ash continue to lead the group along, and Salieri follows after. Time to pay attention to the man in front of him who was introducing himself. He tips his hat at Jack, bowing slightly.]
Salieri. A pleasure.
[Soon they're at their destination: a small, quiet shop selling ceramics, nestled in between a row of shops. Inside, lining the shelves are beautiful handcrafted pieces of dinnerwear, tea sets, trinkets and more. Behind the counter is a woman sitting alone, reading a book. Her eyebrows raise as so many people - a few of whom she knows well - enter the store. As she stands up, it would stand out to most that she's dressed in men's clothing - button-down shirt, suspenders, tie and pants.]
Well now. What's all about?
[Ed lets out a relieved sigh to see her working the store.]
Maris, we need your help. There's just... a lot to explain first.
no subject
yet, so he just grins back at Salieri.]I'm Santa.
[He doesn't elaborate further. Spells to keep up, and all that. He behaves himself as they head into the little shop. Well, until he gets there...]
Hey, should we really bring the bull into the china shop? [He nods his head at Dylas. Ed seems to hang out with a lot of people who are hotter than he is, including the cute redhead inside the shop, and maybe they shouldn't burn bridges just yet?]
no subject
He followed Ed and Ash straight to the store and was one of the first to enter. The fact that Maris wears men's clothing does not faze the 31st century man at all.]
Evenin', ma'am. Name's Mordecai. Just so you know, there's more of us comin'.
no subject
"A pleasure, indeed. So, what's the deal, you two? Bad ex? Doc forget to call the next morning? Ed forget to compliment those stunning eyes?"
The only thing better than somebody who responds to attention is somebody who, in giving them attention, annoys someone else. It appeals to the inner
outerfive year-old in Jack. Kind of a brat for a supposed Captain.no subject
K'pandolu makes a face at Santa.]
I doubt outside will be better.
[on a personal level, at least.
Jack also gets a face, although she can't deny curiosity. She turns to Maris again, putting on a smile.]
K'pandolu Tohka. We're visiting, and curious- I heard there was some sort of commotion in town?
no subject
He looks at K'Pandolu and Ed (or, tries to rather) before going in.]
It's alright. I can wait outside if you think it's for the best.
[Or drag him in, either works.]
no subject
Commotion? This is a big town, there are a lot of commotion going on all the time. Can ya be more specific?
[Ed jumps in to fill Maris in. He looks a little sheepish.]
How about something at the guild house...?
[Maris nods knowingly at that, grinning a little. She knows how Ed is persona non grata when it comes to the guild. Her and Ash were probably the only ones in the city who knew why, too.]
Oh, yeah. "Commotion" is a word for that. As far as I know, your little friend the summoner might have been the cause. Called up something he couldn't handle, as far as I know. Afraid I don't know much more than that as the place has been on lockdown for the last few hours. My guess is that whatever he called out is still loose in there. Must be a new record, eh?
[Ed grimaced. A sudden uncontrolled magic outburst? This could be something to do with what they're looking for. If there was a portal in there, that plus a summoner could have called out something they were unfamiliar with. Ed looks to the Heroes to explain.]
I had a feeling that if there was going to be something we needed here, it'd be at the guild house. But, um... I can't go in there. I'll talk about it later. But I'm going to need a disguise spell if I'm going to get in there, and so is Ash.
[He really doesn't want to explain why he can't go in there in front of Salieri. Good thing Salieri's not listening at the moment, he's too focused on the people who are giving him attention. While Ed might be ignoring Jack's comments for a the moment, Salieri certainly isn't. He thinks Jack's insinuations are hilarious.]
My goodness, no! He's a married man, you know. And I know his wife well. It's a complicated story on how we know each other~ But how do you know him? I know I haven't seen any of you around before, I'd remember.
no subject
Disguises? What did you do, man?
[There are too many things going on for Santa to properly focus on a single one. Ed and the bar guy have some lurid past with a sketchy magic guild and Salieri is bringing up Ed's wife. Santa knows that most of Ed's relationships...don't end well, from what he saw in the maze, though the wife's not the first to go. But he knows his time paradoxes, and he's keeping his damn mouth shut.]
We're from overseas. You do a lot of traveling?
[Making small talk with the shadow man seems the safest option.]
no subject
A summoning… [she's. a little surprised, maybe? But not that much. There's part of her that's going 'oh, of course', though it seems maybe a little less reasonable outside of Eorzea.] I hope they'll be open to accepting our help.
[she's still somewhat uncertain about Salieri, but she does listen in, curious.]
no subject
The Barkeep turns to Ed.] So, can that Illusionist spell help out with these disguises, or is this turnin' into a sneakin' sort of thing?
Sneakin' sounds fun.
no subject
Salieri wants to know how they met, so here we go again with the Jack Harkness Lies That Aren't Lies Machine revving up. "I'd also call it a complicated story, yeah. Met him on my wanderings, don't quite have a home to go back to, and he's one of the most interesting people I've run into along the way." Truth there. He glances at Ed, watches him. "So why not just stick around?"
no subject
Afraid not. My kind's not always welcome everywhere. But I'd like to, since this town can get awfully boring sometimes.
[Jack's reaction to hearing Ed was married makes Salieri laugh. Ash chokes back something like a laugh at it well, but says nothing. He's nice.]
What, hasn't he told you? He is! And she's one of the most beautiful women you'll ever see, trust me. He stole her right from under my brother's nose, too. Tsk, tsk.
[Salieri had a lot to do with that too, but even Ed wouldn't say that out loud. Salieri could get in a dangerous amount of trouble if his brother found out about that.
Ed, for his part, gives Jack a flat look. Ed reaches at his own shirt collar, like he suddenly realizes he's missing something that's normally there. That's when he notices that the ring that's been on a chain on his neck for the last few decades is back on his finger in this setting. He holds it up for Jack to see.]
Yes, I'm married, I'll have you know. But she-- She's probably at home right now, and we live quite a few miles from here. We won't have time to go get her.
[He almost trails off, realizing how close and yet how far he is from Gwen right now. But he has to act like that heartache isn't there in front of Ash, Salieri and Maris.]
Okay, sneaking we can do, to a point. We can get close to the guild with Maris's help. But they're pretty fortified, and don't just let anyone in. If we can get past their magical defenses without alerting anyone, we might be able to explain our case before they kick us out. Now, I used to know what they used for defense spells, but I'm not sure if that's changed...
[More like he doesn't remember as it was now 50 years ago for him. Besides, he's here without any equipment, so even faking his way through magic was going to be tough.
Maris has been quietly cleaning up some things behind the counter while the others talked, putting her book and a few other items into a satchel, and grabbing her boater hat and jacket. She locks up the front door and flips the sign to the closed side, then waves everyone to follow her through the back.]
You can all talk it over on the way, yes? Seeing as this is a big, suspicious crowd, I'll take ya myself. Not about to trust this job with someone else. I'm also guessing the lot of ya are casters, so if you need supplies, say so now before we go, so I know which direction we're headed.
[Ed picks up a bit at that. He looks to the Heroes with a grin returning to his face as they exit the back of the shop.]
Right. Need anything from the magic black market?
no subject
How 'bout a hat? Like, a magic one that doesn't mess up your hair when you wear it. [Because priorities. If magic is real, hopefully they put it to good use like that. He turns back to Salieri.]
C'mon, is a guy like you really gonna let that stop ya? There's tons of weird shit out there to see if you're bored.
