[While they may have had that creeping feeling, whoever was following them seemed to be virtually trailless. Maybe it was the amount of people on the street making it harder. Dylas doesn't seem to hear anything, though maybe the wind sounds stronger than it should considering there's only a light breeze.

Just as Jack turns to take off, Ash and Ed stop too. Ash wrinkles his nose for a moment, frowning. Ed can't seem to figure it out either, but the lack of clues is a clue itself. Before he can say anything, Ash cuts in.]

Oh, great. It's your little Shadow friend, Doc.

[As Jack backs around, a shape seems to form from the shadows of a nearby alley. It almost seems to take on a human shape, with glowing blue eyes, before the shadows suddenly part and a young man steps out near him. Any locals walking nearby are a bit startled by this, but don't seem to react to severely. Like guys forming out of shadows is just a thing that happens.

The man wears a bright red pinstripe suit and red hat, which make him stand out like a lighthouse in the sea of dark colored suits everywhere. He looks over Jack's shoulders at the others, before looking back to Jack. His voice is teasing.]

Hi there~

[A few yards back with the others, Ed just groans.]

We do not have time for him.
forcegalactic: (wow I'm offended)

[personal profile] forcegalactic 2016-08-29 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
[Mordecai turns his head in a manner that indicates he could care less about random townspeople following them.]

Not interested in what you're sellin'.

[Sheesh. They already have enough on their hands, and guys popping out of nowhere is not on the list of things Barkeep wants to deal with today. He rolls his eyes and turns back the way they were headed, hoping to walk away from this nuisance.]
21stcenturyguy: (surprised)

[personal profile] 21stcenturyguy 2016-08-29 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
[Ummm, speak for yourself, Barkeep. Santa's willing to hear the sales pitch. He only catches it because everyone else is stopping to look around.]

Well...that's pretty freakin' badass. Can you guys do anythin' cool like that? Maybe we should get him to show us around...

[Distractions aren't great for holding the illusion over everyone, and if any more flashy people pop out of the woodwork, the spell's likely to start faltering.]
unyieldingspirit: (were you dropped on your head)

[personal profile] unyieldingspirit 2016-08-29 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
[she smiles at Dylas, glad he could back her up. Although that fades when the guy materialises in front of them, and she steps closer to the others, eyes narrowed. Someone forming out of the shadows is probably not good news.]

We have places to be; my apologies.

[though she doesn't sound it.]

While a guy appearing out of the shadow is very interesting, what's more interesting to Jack is the reaction of people around, or rather the lack of reaction. This is a world where The Secret Is Out, and the supernatural is normal. But it is still trying to keep them under wraps. Is it just the time difference or something else?

Ask later. Distract now.

"Captain Jack Harkness, and who are you?"
has_been_faking: (unimpressed)

[personal profile] has_been_faking 2016-08-31 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Who said I'm selling anything?

[The man is very amused by the varied reactions he's getting from the group. Annoyance from Ash was normal, but not usually Ed. And two of their little party at least seem interested in him, which is great.]

Showing some out-of-towners around, Doc? Why didn't you say so? Who knows this town better than me?

[He tips his hat at Santa. He would love to show folks around. Maybe do lunch! Before he says anything else, Ed cuts in with an exasperated tone.]

Everyone, this is Salieri. I'll... explain him later. Salieri, you know I can't make you go away. But if you're coming along, you're going to help us out and not be a nuisance. Alright? We're heading to see Maris, and I can explain to you what's going on once we get there.

[Ed almost talks to Salieri like he was scolding a teenager, but Salieri just nods. Ed and Ash continue to lead the group along, and Salieri follows after. Time to pay attention to the man in front of him who was introducing himself. He tips his hat at Jack, bowing slightly.]

Salieri. A pleasure.

[Soon they're at their destination: a small, quiet shop selling ceramics, nestled in between a row of shops. Inside, lining the shelves are beautiful handcrafted pieces of dinnerwear, tea sets, trinkets and more. Behind the counter is a woman sitting alone, reading a book. Her eyebrows raise as so many people - a few of whom she knows well - enter the store. As she stands up, it would stand out to most that she's dressed in men's clothing - button-down shirt, suspenders, tie and pants.]

Well now. What's all about?

[Ed lets out a relieved sigh to see her working the store.]

Maris, we need your help. There's just... a lot to explain first.
21stcenturyguy: (smirk)

[personal profile] 21stcenturyguy 2016-09-01 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
[Santa doesn't have a fancy hat to tip yet, so he just grins back at Salieri.]

I'm Santa.

[He doesn't elaborate further. Spells to keep up, and all that. He behaves himself as they head into the little shop. Well, until he gets there...]

Hey, should we really bring the bull into the china shop? [He nods his head at Dylas. Ed seems to hang out with a lot of people who are hotter than he is, including the cute redhead inside the shop, and maybe they shouldn't burn bridges just yet?]
forcegalactic: (dum dee dum)

[personal profile] forcegalactic 2016-09-01 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[The Barkeep rolls his eyes and diverts his attention away from the newcomer. If he didn't cause any trouble, there was no reason to kick him out, but that didn't mean he was a welcome guest.

He followed Ed and Ash straight to the store and was one of the first to enter. The fact that Maris wears men's clothing does not faze the 31st century man at all.
]

Evenin', ma'am. Name's Mordecai. Just so you know, there's more of us comin'.

[personal profile] theendiswherewestartfrom 2016-09-02 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, no no, Jack has found his distraction for the moment. He exaggeratedly looks between Salieri and Ed as they walk, and then once they arrive, he pretends to talk to Saleiri in confidence, although the whole room can hear him.

"A pleasure, indeed. So, what's the deal, you two? Bad ex? Doc forget to call the next morning? Ed forget to compliment those stunning eyes?"

The only thing better than somebody who responds to attention is somebody who, in giving them attention, annoys someone else. It appeals to the inner outer five year-old in Jack. Kind of a brat for a supposed Captain.

[she wears it so well, though!

K'pandolu makes a face at Santa.]

I doubt outside will be better.

[on a personal level, at least.

Jack also gets a face, although she can't deny curiosity. She turns to Maris again, putting on a smile.]

K'pandolu Tohka. We're visiting, and curious- I heard there was some sort of commotion in town?
sullenstallion: (Default)

[personal profile] sullenstallion 2016-09-07 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
[Dammit, Santa. Dylas actually isn't sure if that's a real suggestion or not. His head is still ringing from the fact that he punctured a light with his antler earlier, and, to make matters worse (in his own mind), he still has to account for his antlers even if there's an illusion cast over them. What if he knocks something off of a high shelf? It'll look like a ghost shoved it off.

He looks at K'Pandolu and Ed (or, tries to rather) before going in.]

It's alright. I can wait outside if you think it's for the best.

[Or drag him in, either works.]
has_been_faking: (neutral/serious)

[personal profile] has_been_faking 2016-09-16 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
[Maris isn't surprised to see that the strange group has something to do with either Ed, Salieri or both. She looks at K'pandolu, trying to figure out where she was from with a name like that. Maris herself is Scottish, if her accent was anything to go by.]

Commotion? This is a big town, there are a lot of commotion going on all the time. Can ya be more specific?

[Ed jumps in to fill Maris in. He looks a little sheepish.]

How about something at the guild house...?

[Maris nods knowingly at that, grinning a little. She knows how Ed is persona non grata when it comes to the guild. Her and Ash were probably the only ones in the city who knew why, too.]

Oh, yeah. "Commotion" is a word for that. As far as I know, your little friend the summoner might have been the cause. Called up something he couldn't handle, as far as I know. Afraid I don't know much more than that as the place has been on lockdown for the last few hours. My guess is that whatever he called out is still loose in there. Must be a new record, eh?

[Ed grimaced. A sudden uncontrolled magic outburst? This could be something to do with what they're looking for. If there was a portal in there, that plus a summoner could have called out something they were unfamiliar with. Ed looks to the Heroes to explain.]

I had a feeling that if there was going to be something we needed here, it'd be at the guild house. But, um... I can't go in there. I'll talk about it later. But I'm going to need a disguise spell if I'm going to get in there, and so is Ash.

[He really doesn't want to explain why he can't go in there in front of Salieri. Good thing Salieri's not listening at the moment, he's too focused on the people who are giving him attention. While Ed might be ignoring Jack's comments for a the moment, Salieri certainly isn't. He thinks Jack's insinuations are hilarious.]

My goodness, no! He's a married man, you know. And I know his wife well. It's a complicated story on how we know each other~ But how do you know him? I know I haven't seen any of you around before, I'd remember.
21stcenturyguy: (hmph)

[personal profile] 21stcenturyguy 2016-09-16 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
[Well, he can't be left on his own, so Santa rolls his eyes and gestures for Dylas to come in with the rest of them. Who knows if Dylas will listen to him, though.]

Disguises? What did you do, man?

[There are too many things going on for Santa to properly focus on a single one. Ed and the bar guy have some lurid past with a sketchy magic guild and Salieri is bringing up Ed's wife. Santa knows that most of Ed's relationships...don't end well, from what he saw in the maze, though the wife's not the first to go. But he knows his time paradoxes, and he's keeping his damn mouth shut.]

We're from overseas. You do a lot of traveling?

[Making small talk with the shadow man seems the safest option.]
unyieldingspirit: (just disappointed)

[personal profile] unyieldingspirit 2016-09-16 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
[K'pandolu blinks back at her, as innocently as she can. Maybe she should have thought of a hyuran name…? But then she's likely to forget to respond to it.]

A summoning… [she's. a little surprised, maybe? But not that much. There's part of her that's going 'oh, of course', though it seems maybe a little less reasonable outside of Eorzea.] I hope they'll be open to accepting our help.

[she's still somewhat uncertain about Salieri, but she does listen in, curious.]
forcegalactic: Will edit this art so many times (pondering)

[personal profile] forcegalactic 2016-09-18 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
[They can forget Salieri, so long as he doesn't try anything funny, and not the comedic sort of funny.

The Barkeep turns to Ed.
] So, can that Illusionist spell help out with these disguises, or is this turnin' into a sneakin' sort of thing?

Sneakin' sounds fun.

Jack lets out the biggest choking cough. Wait, what. "Married?" Pause. "To a woman?" Jack. "I'd...never gotten that impression from him, no..." The look on his face says it all, he is absolutely dying to know more.

Salieri wants to know how they met, so here we go again with the Jack Harkness Lies That Aren't Lies Machine revving up. "I'd also call it a complicated story, yeah. Met him on my wanderings, don't quite have a home to go back to, and he's one of the most interesting people I've run into along the way." Truth there. He glances at Ed, watches him. "So why not just stick around?"
has_been_faking: (default smirk)

[personal profile] has_been_faking 2016-09-22 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
[The shadow man sure does love the conversation. He gets ignored a lot, for a lot of reasons. So having lovely humans to talk to means he'll spill all the beans he's got on whatever they want. He shakes his head at Santa's question, trying not to look disappointed.]

Afraid not. My kind's not always welcome everywhere. But I'd like to, since this town can get awfully boring sometimes.

[Jack's reaction to hearing Ed was married makes Salieri laugh. Ash chokes back something like a laugh at it well, but says nothing. He's nice.]

What, hasn't he told you? He is! And she's one of the most beautiful women you'll ever see, trust me. He stole her right from under my brother's nose, too. Tsk, tsk.

[Salieri had a lot to do with that too, but even Ed wouldn't say that out loud. Salieri could get in a dangerous amount of trouble if his brother found out about that.

Ed, for his part, gives Jack a flat look. Ed reaches at his own shirt collar, like he suddenly realizes he's missing something that's normally there. That's when he notices that the ring that's been on a chain on his neck for the last few decades is back on his finger in this setting. He holds it up for Jack to see.]

Yes, I'm married, I'll have you know. But she-- She's probably at home right now, and we live quite a few miles from here. We won't have time to go get her.

[He almost trails off, realizing how close and yet how far he is from Gwen right now. But he has to act like that heartache isn't there in front of Ash, Salieri and Maris.]

Okay, sneaking we can do, to a point. We can get close to the guild with Maris's help. But they're pretty fortified, and don't just let anyone in. If we can get past their magical defenses without alerting anyone, we might be able to explain our case before they kick us out. Now, I used to know what they used for defense spells, but I'm not sure if that's changed...

[More like he doesn't remember as it was now 50 years ago for him. Besides, he's here without any equipment, so even faking his way through magic was going to be tough.

Maris has been quietly cleaning up some things behind the counter while the others talked, putting her book and a few other items into a satchel, and grabbing her boater hat and jacket. She locks up the front door and flips the sign to the closed side, then waves everyone to follow her through the back.]

You can all talk it over on the way, yes? Seeing as this is a big, suspicious crowd, I'll take ya myself. Not about to trust this job with someone else. I'm also guessing the lot of ya are casters, so if you need supplies, say so now before we go, so I know which direction we're headed.

[Ed picks up a bit at that. He looks to the Heroes with a grin returning to his face as they exit the back of the shop.]

Right. Need anything from the magic black market?
21stcenturyguy: (grrr)

[personal profile] 21stcenturyguy 2016-09-23 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
[It is almost physically hurting Santa to not say anything to Ed, but he's trying to be on his best behavior and not cause time paradoxes in front of the hot retro crowd. Seriously though, this MUST be why Ed is such a sad-sack now. He used up every ounce of cool he had on in the 1900s with the fucking magic black market. He glares at the Doc for being really fuckin' infuriating.]

How 'bout a hat? Like, a magic one that doesn't mess up your hair when you wear it. [Because priorities. If magic is real, hopefully they put it to good use like that. He turns back to Salieri.]

C'mon, is a guy like you really gonna let that stop ya? There's tons of weird shit out there to see if you're bored.

[murmured:] And growing larger…

[well, maybe if there's enough of a mix of strangers and people from here they'll look normal.]

That would certainly be useful… [she might be thinking more of helmet hair, though.] Some more suitable clothes might be good, but I suspect you mean items for counter-spells. I don't suppose there's a simple ward-breaker…?
forcegalactic: (wow I'm offended)

[personal profile] forcegalactic 2016-10-01 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
[The Barkeep rolls his eyes at Santa's suggestion. This is a young man who does not have his priorities in order.]

Just better clothes and somethin' that'll get up to bypass security. I got healin' magic all covered.

[The magic here must be different than that on Crystallis. Casting Ultima on a door is no way to sneak in.]
has_been_faking: (hat tip)

[personal profile] has_been_faking 2016-10-03 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
[Barkeep is thinking what Ed is, actually. He'll fill them in as Maris leads them back onto the streets and further into Chinatown. Clothes both regualr and magic? She knows someone.]

You guys might be our aces in the hole. Your skills work different than magic here. So they can't prepare against what you can do. That place looks like a normal house, but it's practically a fortress. When magic experiments go wrong, they can stay contained.

[And it conveniently gets him out of having to do much magic fakery. Good.

Salieri is still trailing after them, and he gives Santa a shrug.]

You must not know much about my kind. That's okay~ I do plan to see the world someday, but for now, this city has plenty going on to keep you busy. Like this little adventure! Of course, the guild has ways of keeping Shadows out, but if there are holes in their defenses...

[To demonstrate his point, Salieri dissipates while still walking, turning into that ethereal form he arrived in. It's dark, misty and just barely person-shaped. His eyes, now larger and elongated, faintly glow the same blue they are when he's in human form. Several normal people milling about who see him do this give the group a wide berth. Ed grumbles at him.]

Yes, Salieri, they're all very impressed. Can you please go back to human so you stop getting us attention?

[Salieri does as told, looking smug as he does so. Because he really does want to impress the new people and he feels like it's working, whether it is or not.]

[Maris leads the group to a busy, congested tailoring shop, where many people were working at machines, running supplies around, and packing shipments. She has the group wait outside while she steps off to talk to someone. After a few minutes she comes back out and flags them to follow her inside to dodge the workers and lead them through to the back. She looks uneasy, but that's due to the size of the group. It looks suspicious no matter what.

In the back of the factory they're lead to a small room with a few works and some boxes, which are being opened for display for the group. Maris waves an arm towards it all.]

Regular clothes, and not so regular clothes. You'll have to ask about each piece and what it does, but you might be able to find what you're lookin' for here. Let me guess, Doc - this is going on the tab?

[Ed grins sheepishly and nods, and then tugs on Ash's shirt sleeve. He tries to speak quietly to him.]

Do you have any cash on you?

[The group is free to take a look at the merchandise! It's low to medium quality stuff, and consisted of mostly men's fashion in the "regular" section. The enchanted stuff looks normal, but comes in an array of styles and accessories.]
21stcenturyguy: (Suit)

[personal profile] 21stcenturyguy 2016-10-03 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[Dude, Santa's totally impressed with Salieri, way more so than with Ed calling him an 'Ace'.]

So, like, are your clothes made out of shadow-stuff, or do you magic 'em when you do that? [Because, yeah, priorities. And speaking of...

Santa picks himself out a suit with a fancy waistcoat and pinstripes. He's tempted to go black, but remembering D9/8s uster's teasing about the lack of color in his wardrobe, he picks a deep blue instead. And he's totally getting that fancy hat that doesn't mess up his hair. He motions to Ed after he tries it on.]

So, like, are we gonna make a paradox, leaving the other you with a tab he never racked up?
unyieldingspirit: (how do I put this)

[personal profile] unyieldingspirit 2016-10-04 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[K'pandolu turns to stare at Salieri directly, barely blinking for a few moments. He's seemed harmless so far- beyond being the talkative sort, but that trick of turning into shadow sets her on edge. It makes her think a little too much of Ascians. Hopefully as long as one or another of them has their eye on him, it won't be a problem…

She nods to Maris, hands tucked behind her back.]

Thank you very much.

[She goes to look for a hat as well- something that'll fit over her ears comfortably, for preference, and the better if they'll be hidden. Something that'd hide her tail would be good as well, though she glances at the other people around for a guide as to tops that would look in place.]
