There was a heavy feeling in the air, which was thick with pyreflies as it was. Something crackled in the emptiness of the cavern, someone at unrest... Yuna knew about the story of Lady Ginnem's fate, but had never pushed her guardian for details. A fallen summoner wasn't something people usually talked about, perhaps out of both respect and fear. But as they reached the depths of the cave, Yuna gasped, taking a step back from the pit in front of them, which housed the statue containing the stolen fayth.

"T-the rumours were true!"

Hearing the gasp, Ace instinctively reached out his hand to prevent the summoner from falling down, but withdrew it as soon as the danger had passed. Up until now, questions had felt largely unnecessary. The presence of the pyreflies floating above their heads explained the place's history more than words ever could; it seemed almost disrespectful to fill the silence with idle talk.

However, they'd come here for a reason, and it sounded like Yuna was ready to reveal it. The cadet spoke out quietly.

"What rumours...?"

Yuna eased herself to her knees, fixated on the statue in front of them that now began to softly sing. "There were stories, when I was growing up. About bands of the excommunicated," all signs pointed to the Al Bhed, but that wasn't important here anyway, was it? "They grouped together, raided the temples... and stole the statues that housed the fayth."

And with the last bit, her voice dwindled down to a whisper. "Hiding them away..."

Ace followed suit, listening to what his own instinct advised. He had been informed of the significance of the song before, by the girl who bore the same name as the summoner by his side... and it had etched into his memory quite deeply, for he was able to recognise the melody immediately. So hauntingly beautiful.

For that reason, he found himself hesitant to raise his voice, as it meant interrupting the melody of the prayer. A thoughtful pause followed Yuna's explanation, the cadet's eyes wandering between the statue and the pyreflies above, which presence was even stronger in this part of the cave.

"In fear of their power?" He eventually asked, matching the volume of his voice to hers. The Empire had always sought to fracture Rubrum's link with the Eidolons, and all magic, for that matter - for no other reason.

"After all these years... do you believe your call can still be answered?"

"Not exactly, they... wanted change, I suppose. With no fayth to pray to, the summoners— wouldn't be able to complete their pilgrimages... And without a pilgrimage a summoner could never complete their training. They would never be able to call the Final Aeon..."

They'd be saved.

But to Ace's second question, Yuna could only answer honestly, with a hoarse, whispered "I don't know..." Would the fayth still trust her? Recognize that she was a summoner of Spira, even though she'd been gone for years now? "But. I need to try."

"It sounds disrespectful, to those who have willingly chosen to walk that path. We all make our sacrifices." Maybe he was being too harsh of a judge in a situation he didn't wholly understand, but years of rigorous training had left Ace with a rather pragmatic approach. "Putting our lives on the line, so that others do not have to... it's a conscious choice."

A choice that nobody had the right to deprive you of making. He breathed a soft sigh, noting the doubt pouring from the summoner's words.

"... Would you rather be left alone, Yuna?"

The tale sparked his curiosity and made him wish to see it with his own eyes, but he wasn't going to intrude on her privacy, especially when the task was something of such importance.

Disrespectful... although she couldn't agree entirely, she understood how Ace might think along those lines. The Al Bhed, if they had truly been responsible, had made their own sacrifices as well, branded as traitors, exiled, hated, even her own mother... all because they didn't want to see death fought with death. The never-ending spiral... Spira...

"No," Yuna's voice was soft as she answered. "I'd... feel safer if you were here with me," it seemed to come out like a confession. Guardians traditionally waited for their summoners outside of the chamber but, well... there was no such partition in the cavern.

Not to mention, this was the path less travelled... this aeon... she had no idea what to expect. "Please. I only... need a moment."
