For all his information gathering, and hiding in the background, Kaji's cowardice has gained him absolutely no advantage here. He is concerned for Ib, and holds a copy of the letter sent out to all the heroes clenched in one fist.

"...I don't know." Words that Kaji does not like saying. "Get a letter from a dead man saying that there's a cure. I don't like any of this."

He drops to a knee to get closer to Ib's level, and looks her over. "How you doing, kiddo?" She'll stay. And if there's a fight, she'll fight. At least Kaji has figured that out by now.

[She gives him a faint smile.]

I'm okay. The medicine they gave me is helping a lot.

[She holds up the mostly finished megalixer. Of course she knows that won't last. What she says next comes out hesitantly.]

We'll.... be okay, right? There's enough of us....

[...left. But she can't say that. Saying it acknowledges that people died.]

...here. We can figure this out.... right?

[Honestly she just wants reassurance. This is a little girl looking for an adult to tell her that things will be okay.]

Kaji nods very slowly and seriously. This really doesn't look good, and any note claiming a quick fix to all their problems is almost certainly a trap. At least, that's the way that Kaji's world works. Could this be different?

He holds up the crumpled note. "Someone said they found a solution. But even if they don't have it quite right, we can figure it out. Lots of smart people here, one or two might even be smarter than me." A brief cocky smile.

"Whatever we need to do, we'll do it, right?" A little better than a blind hope, which rings false to Kaji. He is still acknowledging that there might be a price to pay here, but the obstacle can be overcome.

Yeah...

[She smiles at him gratefully. It may be a bit of baseless hope, but it still makes her feel better. And, because he looks like he needs a little reassurance too, she hugs him tightly.]

It'll be okay. We're all heroes. We still have to save the world after this.

[The heroes never lose in the middle of the story. And certainly never like this.]

Luckily, Kaji doesn't even hesitate to hug Ib back. He might be internally flailing a little, but he can recognize when a kid needs some extra reassurance. The weight of what they're doing out here really hits him in that moment. Even if this whole thing is a trap, a cure is worth it. And if there is no cure, if these people have gotten up the hopes of a little girl, only to crush them-

Kaji isn't sure what he would do, then. Even the thought makes him quietly angry, but he doesn't get like this. It all rings too familiar of the way Shinji and Asuka were being manipulated. Damn it. Of all the people here, why does the kid have to depend on him?

"Afraid I'm not used to this sort of thing. But if I have to start being a better man to fight this. Then okay." He releases the hug, but puts his hands on Ib's shoulders, looks her in the eye. "Be careful. Your magic is powerful, more than I can manage, but keep close to people who are strong physically, too, okay?"
