[A. Heran Stand - July 27th, and onward]
[Johnny stands with a Heran phone in his hand, his face frozen in awe and wonder.]

Oh my god. Oh my god. Youse guys made phones. Actual phones! There's hope for this planet yet!

[When not marveling over this new technological advancement, he'll be playing lots of video games. He'll be there every day actually, trying new ones or attempting to beat his previous high scores on others.]

[Monster Arena - July 29th]
[Thinking about entering the competition? Johnny is too, looking over the posters displaying the creatures up for fighting.]

Do ya really think the raptor's wearin' a top hat? Like... why?

[C. Culinary Stands - August 1st]
[Free food? That's the best news Johnny's heard in ages. He's walking around with a pile of food in his arms, enjoying everything he's got. Normally he eats like a famished horse, so he plans to take full advantage of this buffet.]

Have you tried this? I... don't actually know what it is, I think it might come from Aerlion? But it's great.

[Saori looked over at what Johnny was referring to. If there's one way to examine a region or a culture in her opinion, it had to be through its food. When she wasn't busy as a cop, or training as an Assassin, she was pouring over this world's culinary delights.]

Oh yeah, that's definitely from Aerlion, alright! I've yet to find something here I didn't like!

Same. But I'll eat just about whatever if it's free, I ain't gonna be picky. Can they really afford to feed us all for free, though? Seems like a lot.

It sure does but all the more reason to not to waste anything. I'm just hope they were paid good gil in return.

And actually I was thinking as a way to thank them, I might go in and lend a hand in the kitchen. I'm sure they'd love to explore the rest of the festival.

[With the Calamity closing in, it would only be inevitable that resource shortages will start. Part of her felt like this was some of the civilians way to thank them and show their support despite the hazy future ahead of them.]

[Johnny actually considers that, mulling it over. He'd been getting a lot more into cooking lately, mostly stemming from living by himself so much. And now there was someone else in the house to cook for again.]

That's not a half bad idea. I ain't much of a cook, but I might be able to help, too. Um, once I'm done eatin' all of this first.

[Saori laughs and smiles.]

Of course! I was actually thinking the same thing. I haven't had some of these food in a long time and there's still some I haven't tried yet. After that, I'll see if I can convince them to let us help.

[ Ales might weep. So many displays of technology. So many designs that cater to his steampunk aesthetic. Telephones. Automations. Video games!

Well, video games are a silly time waster, but his point still stands. ]

To think we were meant to hate the Herans...

[ His tiny, tearful voice comes from below Johnny. ]

[Johnny clutches the phone, and looks down at Ales with such joy that no one on Crystallis has ever seen.]

Right? How goddamn stupid are we? Look at this! I don't even know how a phone would work on this planet, but I don't care. This is great!

Step one of our plan to modernize Crystallis is complete! All we need is to finalize the design and set up a network and then...!

[He spreads his arms out as wide as he can, and his grin attempts to match it.]

We'll change the woooorld!

[Johnny laughs, hoping that Ales is right.]

Then we can work on gettin' TV and movies... One step a time, I guess. Maybe we can get cameras on these phones? I mean, I guess cameras would be step one, right?

Cameras are around the same level of phones, combining those two without the aid of computers might be a bit much. But if we use radio waves to make these wireless..

[He rubs his hands together as his thinks, leaving the stand attendant very concerned. So many Heroes were ecstatic about this particular invention for some reason.He jabs at finger at the poor worker.] I can send more of my funds towards this worldshaking project!

[The phones alone were a shock. Cloud knows he won't get enough service to text Kunsel back on Gaia, but the thought crosses his mind briefly before realizing that he doesn't have enough gil to get one.

But he does have some money to blow on the little arcade that has been set up.

Floating from machine to machine he winds up trying to peer over Johnny's shoulder to watch him play. He does his best not to be too distracting but he eventually speaks up.]

[Johnny adresses Cloud without turning his eyes from the game.]

Huh? Oh, it's a motorcycle racing game, called Outrace. I think it's kinda like this old game where I'm from called Outrun. I remember playin' it in an arcade on a boardwalk in Jersey at some point.

[The console is the type with handlebars and everything, too.]

It's kinda weird how some of these games are similar to ones I've played back home.

Motorcycle game huh? I think I heard the Gold Saucer back home had one, but that one they just called Crazy Motorcycle.

[Clearly Gaia loses the creative name contest this time.

Cloud stands by, watching Johnny play for a bit.]

Maybe, but I guess some concepts are simple enough. There's weirder things this world has in common with others.....can I get next?

Yeah, maybe these sorts of things are universal? Who knew.

<[It's not long after that that Johnny crashes and burns. Game over. He gives the handlebars a frustrated slap, and the arcade workers eye him nervously. Johnny does a lot of yelling at video games.]

You're up, man. I got the high score, though. Think you can take it?

[Not to mention the sight of a man with his build taking his frustration out on the machines.

As Johnny steps aside Cloud smirks as he settles into the motorcycle's seat. He takes a moment to get a feel for the game's equipment before starting it up.]

I think I can. Just don't go blaming the equipment when I do it.

[Cloud puts his gil into the machine and starts it up. He rocks back and forth on the bike a few times as the race begins, learning just how much pressure he needs to put on it to make the turns. Soon he's weaving through the obstacles and AI racers, racking up bonus points for the near misses. A strong start but he still has a ways to go.]

B-Monster Arena

[Lydia really isn't fond of fighting the monsters--she feels kind of bad about them being captive like this. It's one thing out in the field where it can be self-defense for them or her. Doesn't help that she's used to the 'monsters' being friendly, thanks to the Neitherworld.

SHE is however scouting around with her camera, and Johnny is distinctive. The edges of her crush have faded, but she still thinks he's very cool and she likes his music. So she'll come stand by him, camera hanging around her neck and look up at the poster too.]

If it is, I don't think it's very happy about it. But it might be, depending on how they fasten the hat on.

[Raptor heads aren't exactly designed for top-hat wearing after all.]

Probably not. Maybe somehow this is to draw in more people. Or celebrate the festival. I dunno.

[He's still thinking of competing anyway.]

Like... they better not make us wear goofy hates if we join in, is all.

[Johnny notices the camera around Lydia's neck, and lights up with surprise.]

Whoa, where'd you get that?

[Lydia blinked, as she hadn't seen him light up like that before. Still cute, even if her crush has faded.]

I've had my camera awhile, it was one of my first regains. I recently went and got more film for it though.

[And had to fight a nasty dog. She still thinks maybe they could've tried harder to be friends with it. She'll hold it up anyways though, proud and happy to let him examine it.]

I wanna get pictures of all the Heroes of Light.

That's pretty cool. I can't even remember the last time I've seen one like that. Feels like a hundred years ago. Maybe you can help get real photography to this place. Crystallis needs to get caught up in a lot of things when it comes to technology.

[A idea hits him, but he looks disappointed in it after a moment.]

Man, makes me wish I had, like, some books on technology back home. Stuff on, I dunno, steam engines or electricity. Regain 'em, and give them to all the Scholars here and get things movin'. I did donate my solar-powered amp to Cid for research, but without knowin' how it works, I dunno if they were ever able to reverse engineer it or anythin'.

I know some of the basics, as we studied it in school.

[Back home, not here.]

I could try and regain them, but I'd rather use it on my film.

[The way she says the last word indicates how much she loves her hobby. If she has to, she'll sacrifice--but being able to photograph again? She's so thrilled.]

The execution isn't bad, but the spices could use a bit of tweaking.

( edna just had a way of sounding unimpressed with everything, it seemed like. her eyes were closed as she spoke plainly. ) Probably a total of eighty-two points out of a hundred, if only because the presentation was colourful.

[Johnny looks at Edna while chewing on something on a skewer, eyebrow raised. He looks down at his plate, trying to figure out what was good about the so-called presentation, then back at her.]

Yer critiquing the food they're givin' us for free?

Of course. ( so matter-of-fact. ) Taking pride in your work doesn't cost anything either.

If you're looking for something that's above average though, I'd suggest trying the cream puffs. They're at least a 94, not that they're hard to screw up. ( and a sly look— ) If you know what you're doing, at least.

I ain't picky. Especially when it's free. I guess I can afford to be more picky once I can afford to be that way.

[Once you go from being really rich to homeless, you get a new appreciation for free food.]

Got it. Though I haven't gotten to dessert yet. Hopefully I'll still have room when I'm done all this.
