Johnny decided the best thing he could do was keep his hands shoved in his pockets and not touch anything. Just looking, nothing else.
"Green magicky ball. Got it. And I'll look where I'm walkin' too, I guess..."
Some of these cabinets had to be safe, though, right? Not every one of them could be trapped. After a moment of hesitation, Johnny tried to open one with a finger.
no subject
Well, maybe some glowing could at least indicate... something. Someone else could touch it first if they felt like being brave (or stupid). Unless no one did; then he might get irked enough to stomp over there and do it himself.
A soft sigh slipped out when Reno had to out with his personal relationships. But he couldn't do anything about that. It was Reno's choice and if he felt comfortable enough to give them a summary, fine. He kept his own opinions to himself.
"A marble?" he droned, looking around the crammed room with all its odds and ends. "Well that shouldn't be too hard to find." Wry sarcasm there.
"Man, just yank it open and duck."
no subject
She glanced over at Reno with interest. A large green marble…? "Green- that means growth magic, or something like it, doesn't it? Does it have another name?"
She straightened up from the flasks for a moment, turning more fully. "There's something shining over here- I'm going to go after it." This way, they'd know that something might happen, and she turned back to move the flasks aside to get at whatever was shining back there.
no subject
He shook his head and moved on. "Growth magic? I mean... I guess with enough use, it grew stronger? But on Gaia, our green materia was elemental magic. This one's for Thunder, just the basic spell." After enough time on Crystallis, he was sure all the Heroes knew the basic spells the Black Mages could cast. "I didn't really get to use it."
At her mention of going after something, he looked over his shoulder. "Just be careful." He shouldn't have worried -- about K'pandalu, at least. Behind the flasks, she'll find fifty Amat, easily exchanged into an equal amount of Gil!
Johnny, on the other hand... talk about bad luck. Even with one finger, he happened to pull right on the trigger of a string of small firecrackers. They popped and cracked, spitting light and sparks and in general provided a large distraction from the heavy shotput ball dropping from the top cabinet shelf right onto Johnny's foot.
"Shit!" Reno jumped at the noise.
no subject
"Sonofabitch! Fuck, that's what I get for even tryin' to look... Goddamnit it, is there at least something in that cabinet worth trappin' it like that for!?"

Hitting them with events or spells that forced them to do what they wanted or die via suffocation. Arriving to make announcements of "praise" or "good will" and vanishing the moment someone with the guts tried to attack. Yeah. "Cheating" was a light word to use there.
He glanced over to K'pandalu when she mentioned going after something. "Uh, be careful," Kyo added with a frown. He half expected a boom soon.
But when Reno addressed him, he paused long enough to think back. "Just once, twice maybe." He caught the way Reno cut off the words, but it was too late. He already knew what he was referring to. Look, he cleaned the room... a few times. And cats were curious, even if he controlled it most of the time. But yeah... it was more or less an abandoned room and a painful memory. So he was quick to push it aside and move on.
POW! Kyo jerked upright, practically hitting the ceiling with a yelp of surprise and alarm. Dammit! He instantly regretted egging Johnny on! "Watch it! What exploded?!" And grunted when the other guy more or less backed right into him. Check that- Stumbled.
Kyo caught Johnny by the shoulder, bracing one foot to keep them both from going over. And yeah, he'd agree with that string of cusses. "Who knows?" he muttered, giving the guy a small push to right him again. "You wanna check again?"

While she did believe that all people should have the freedom to pursue their lives as they wished, the situation here in this world had her feeling quite the prude by comparison. Then again, it seemed like 'choice' was a fundamental thing missing here as it was. And listening to the way Reno stumbled over his words in the presence of the orange haired young man she didn't exactly feel like her words were chosen incorrectly, even if they were a bit rude. She'd apologize to him later.
She pondered using the device that she'd found in Captain Harkness' world, reaching into her pocket just as Johnny set off the trap or prank, whatever it was. The pirate whirled, instinct calling to her to draw a gun and instead pulled out the penlike device, the tip glowing green and emitting a whirring noise. She held tense before looking around, happy to see nobody was bleeding from a gunshot wound. "Johnny, are you alright?" She flicked the sonic screwdriver off a few seconds later once she realized she activated it.

K'pandolu huffed at Kyo's words, shaking her head. "Gods," she muttered, because it certainly seemed as though nothing good came of any that chose to manifest themselves.
She took the coin in hand with a grin- which then dropped as the firecrackers went off and the shotput ball dropped. "What was that!?" she demanded, stepping closer to see.
no subject
He gives Kyo a nod in thanks for catching him, and hobbles over towards the cabinet. Now that the trap had been tripped, he figured he might as well take a look at what's inside. Whatever it is better be worth it.

"Geeze, firecrackers would've been enough to deter most people." She was starting to wonder if somehow there was a hidden pendulum blade waiting for them.
Honestly if she had her own goddess powers back, she'd love to give these gods a piece of her mind or fist, which ever came first. Her own world's gods could sometimes get her mad but she didn't think it was possible for them to get even worse.

Reno caught his breath and looked to Saori gratefully. At least she was prepared. He had nothing but his weapons and the crystal he'd stolen from Palitutu's WEAPON. He couldn't even use any job abilities from Crystallis like this. "Thanks... shit, I'm glad it ain't broken..."
As if to add insult to injury, inside the cabinet is a box of adhesive bandages. They have a heart pattern. But, besides the bandages and the test tube rack, Johnny does find a lead. A collection of notebooks, unlike the scientific and occult texts on the bookshelves. They would appear to be Marisa's personal notes on her experiments. The last entries are about the materia.

Glancing down, Kyo wondered if the other guy's foot was broken. "Who puts a damn shot put for a trap?" he asked, bending down to pick up the iron ball once Johnny was standing again. He gave the other a nod at the silent gratitude, then tossed the ball up and down a few times. Heavy thing too... For lack of anything better to do and for the chance of using it as a weapon, he held onto the thing.
"Or make them even more curious." Still, what else were they going to do? They had to press on if this thing really was in here. Firecrackers and traps included. While Saori went about helping Johnny, Kyo headed for the desk. If this woman was a witch of sorts, then something magical would probably be where she could study it. His guess.
Unfortunately that means he missed the collection of notebooks. Oh well.
no subject
"So what's inside? Surely it's interesting, if she put that thing there to protect it." She leaned over to try and see herself, curious.
no subject
At least his pain for them a clue. He took out the notebooks and quickly flipped through a couple before tossing one to Reno.
"Bingo. Looks like we found her work. If she was experimentin' with what you're looking for, maybe she wrote about it in here."
no subject
But seeing the attention swinging towards the notebooks--a verbal "Bingo" being the best hint--Kyo abandoned the desk he'd been scanning (and the shot put) and headed over to the other pair. Glad to see Johnny was at least recovering.
"She didn't write any of this in code did she?"
no subject
"Looks like this is the most recent one. Dates go down t' around when she disappeared, otherwise there'd be more here. And I think we're in luck." He held it up for the others to see. While most of the page was covered with numbers and equations, with a few symbols thrown in, the little text there was in bullet-points was easy to read.
"Whether she didn't bother, or Atia's translatin' it anyway, it's all right here." He didn't recognize all the symbols, but most were involved in the equations, so he wrote it off as "smart people" science shit. Not necessary for him to know. The notes, though vague, spoke more to him about what was actually going on.
"These ones, these dates -- they're sorta describing what we're lookin' for, yo. Size measurements, color, weight an' opacity... She's definitely got the idea that it's magic, since I got it from a goddess." He tapped the page, then looked over toward the desk. "Looks like you had the right idea, Kyo. She might have it in 'er desk, or at least somethin' else useful. It was the last project she was workin' on."
no subject
"So we know it's definitely here, at least," K'pandolu put in, and nodded. "Let's focus on the desk for now, then." She turned around to go back to the desk, and look for any compartments where the materia might be hidden.
no subject
An orange brow arched when he got singled out, but grinned afterwards and gave a casual (cocky) shrug. "Hey someone had to get it right." They all couldn't be looking in the wrong spot. Though remembering what happened to Johnny, Kyo looked at the desk with a slight apprehension.
"So... uh... who wants to start opening drawers?" he asked, kind of trying to insinuate to K'pandolu that it might be dangerous to just start poking around it willy nilly.
no subject
Johnny was a tough guy, but the face full of fireworks was really unpleasant, even more so than the shotput.
no subject
Glancing at the desk she stepped forward. "I'll have a look. I think I'm well equipped for this." She had her ninja and thief skills on hand, so a bit of breaking and entering were in her wheelhouse at the moment. She glanced at her sonic screwdriver, turning it over in her hand. Jack said it wouldn't work on wood, but a lock or traps perhaps? And she didn't have a lockpick or tools with her, and her hidden blade might be a tad too rough for this.
Kneeling in front of the drawer she raised the device and pressed the button, the green light and whirring beginning again as she focused it on the lock. "So then...Let's see how this works..."
APHROS TRIGGERED
However... something else was released as well. With a soft hiss, a light pink gas began pouring from the keyhole. Further examination of the inside of the drawer would reveal a series of tubes and wires connecting vials of liquid up to the inside of the lock. It would appear that the correct key inserted into the lock would have blocked the circuit, but releasing the lock alone triggered the true trap.
Reno had been in the process of reaching triumphantly for the materia when he noticed. "Oh shit..."
no subject
"Oh shit is right. What was that? Poison 'r something?" And Mary was right there when it went off. That's not good.
"Kidd, you okay?"
no subject
But when Mary went for the desk, Kyo quickly slipped to the side, putting a bit of distance between himself and the furniture. Just in case it exploded or something. "Be my guest," he murmured, wondering what "equipped" meant. And that strange device again... He frowned as Mary knelt before the drawer. "Hey, maybe something in front of your face?" Too late; she was already working on it and his curiosity went to the tool in her hand.
Click.
Kyo tensed a bit at the sound, but when the drawer opened and nothing seemed to happen for a second, his hackles went down--Gas! "Get back!" he yelled, retreating from the desk, one hand coming up to cover his face. The scent of the gas was already touching his senses and he cussed.
"Don't breathe, Kidd!" That was her name, right? "Just grab the the marble and bolt!"

The materia had been left behind in her haste, but that was far from the chiefest of her concerns. She waited a moment to feel the telltale burn or pain of poison but instead she felt...warm. She could feel a heat and a tingling building up inside her. And then it began to spread and...
Her eyes went wide as she felt it begin to take effect, shooting an accusing glance at Reno. "You can't be serious..."
