Evening 15th | Barracks [Open to other Militia]

[He hadn't even been asleep for very long, having got off duty only a couple of hours prior , before Sephiroth was awoken by the thickening smoke in the bedroom he shares with another of his comrades. With a cough, he'd felt the extra heat, then seen the glow under the closed door. An alarmed shout had both his colleague and Spencer awake (out of his nearby drawer-bed) and less than a minute later Sephiroth was equipped and making an exit out of their barracks through what had been a window.

But it was not enough for him to only save himself. Sephiroth went from room to room in the barracks as the fire spread looking for others that needed to be alerted or might have become trapped as the inferno engulfed where many might have been already sleeping for hours. His elbow up and bent around his face to prevent him inhaling too much of the smoke directly; but by the end it was of no use. He had no magic to use that might help to put out the fire and even those he managed to smother were quickly lit again under the ensuing attack.

At Spencer's final insistence, though Sephiroth had bid him flee on several occasions, it was clear that they could not tackle this blaze alone between the two of them. Sephiroth paused at the exit to the area and looked back, wheezing slightly with his breaths, and tried not to think of how many might have still been trapped inside. It made no sense but with the chaos soon erupting all around it was all that Sephiroth could do to continue to fight for the sake of those dozens who may well have just been burned alive.]

[Jade was not having an easy time. Although his Watera spell was effective against the fire, there was only so much one man could do, and his magic did little to protect him from the smoke. Nevertheless, he strove to rescue as many as he could; too many losses and they would lose the unexpected battle before it even began.

He managed to clear a path to an exit and waved other survivors through when he spotted his fellow Hero.]

Glad to see you made it. Is anyone still trapped in your side of the building?

[The taste of soot, ash and cooked flesh hung heavily in the back of Sephiroth's throat as he took a wheezy breath in and then erupted in a short chain of coughing as Jade came into his vicinity.

The building before him, what had been his barracks that he had come to call his home in recent months was already well ablaze and with a loud crack the main beam to the roof finally splintered - collapsing the whole structure in on itself. Spencer clung in to the back of one of Sephiroth's boots and hid his face away. A moment later and Sephiroth recomposed himself and looked to Jade.]

I couldn't- [The fact that he couldn't just made it all the more bitter.]- I didn't find very many others.

[The fire had irritated his eyes some, but he blinked their wetness away and tried to ignore it.]

There wasn't any warning.

[Jade nodded grimly as he watched the building collapse. He had feared as much. Two weeks hadn't been enough for him to get attached to the place, but he suspected the same couldn't be said of his comrade. It was no business of his to pry into, however.]

You did all you could, I'm sure. [The words weren't much of a comfort, he knew, but they had more important things to worry about right now. This was no work of random vandalism.]

Unfortunately, we have no time to grieve yet. I doubt whoever attacked the barracks will leave it at that.

[It would never have replaced the highly-coveted environment Sephiroth had been in back home, but he had started to adjust to the living situation in Esdham over the last few months. He wasn't close to any particular one of the other soldiers but more than a few of them were at least on the level of acquaintances.

He's not one to seek the comfort either. It was a bitter pill to swallow but hardly one Sephiroth hadn't had to take before. As Jade has finished speaking, Sephiroth seems to have finished recomposing himself. Already his sharp tactical intellect working to connect the dots, fired by the adrenaline sparked.]

Of course not. This can only be a beginning.

[There is only one reason the barracks might be attacked first, and that is to lessen the numbers of troops that might be able to hold back an attack. Sure enough, even as Sephiroth's thought train crossed that logical line he spotted what could only have been the forces that had dealt such a devastating blow.]

There. [He nods his head in the direction of the first advancing groups of Warriors/Mages and pulls the faceplate to his dragoon like helmet firmly down over his head, taking a moment to secure it and feed his long silver hair up and through the back where it rested like a decadent plume down his back. Masamune sung as it was pulled down and across from it's cross-back sheath at Sephiroth's left side.]

Are you ready?

[Jade followed his gaze to the advancing enemies and calmly adjusted his glasses. In spite of his Black Mage robes, he had the mobility of a Dragoon to call upon as well -- if any of their opponents were to rush him expecting a slow and vulnerable target, they would quickly find themselves skewered. These silly costumes could hold surprising advantages.]

Naturally.

[Here they come. Spear at ready, Jade prepared to cast.]

Go ahead and take the fun part. I'll cover you.

[Jade didn't have to tell him twice.

No sooner had the words left his mouth when Sephiroth took only a few steps forward and then executed Leap to bridge the gap, and plunged himself and his sword right into the middle of the front line, right off the bat. Swinging around and cutting down many in that first sweep (Crescent Moon) before retreating back a few so that he wouldn't get swamped. There were a handful of other Esdham troopers already in the fray who seemed more than happy for the addition to their fight.

Quickly a blue hue tingled around him as Spirit Surge was next, before Sephiroth even started to use the various Break-skills of the Warrior to thin the crowd swarming all around and even passed him.]

[Jade, meanwhile, had his eye on an enemy mage, who was currently too preoccupied with Sephiroth's advance to pay much mind to anything else. The distraction would cost him; Jade promptly cast a Fira spell, causing the mage to fall shrieking and flailing on the ground. Nothing distracted people quite like setting them on fire.

He had time for one more Fira before enemy troops were swarming past Sephiroth and coming at him, intent on getting rid of the nuisance. Jade allowed them to cross the distance. Only when it was too late for them to notice he wasn't wielding a staff did he act; the unfortunate warriors practically ran into the Crescent Moon, dropping dead as Jade jumped over them, his mage hat falling off, to strike down the next wave.

As fun as the action was, however, Sephiroth and the Esdham soldiers were dealing with the front-line fighting just fine. Jade had his role to play; as soon as he had some breathing space, he resumed his casting. A Fira here, a Thundara there, any enemies trying to flank them met a sudden and painful end.]
