Summary: A letter from Artemicion calls the Heroes of Light for help! Little do they know that they will inadventenly become trapped in the Magitek Facility. The OOC Post for detailed explanations can be found here.

[Ib allows herself to pulled away from the door. Honestly, she doesn't want to get any closer to that thing anyway. Being outside the room now, she doesn't notice their Scholar moving toward it. She looks up at Genesis.]

Um, the people we're trying to find aren't here. Maybe we should look somewhere else?

[ As Baralai moves toward the crystal, he will feel instinctively attracted to it, nearly as if the black crystal compelled him to grab it. But before he can do so, a voice will ring in his head, strong and alarmed: ]

Don't take it!

[ The voice soon fades. He may recognize it as the same voice that told him to Wake Up when he first arrived in Aqures Ixen. If other characters approach the Crystal, they will not hear the voice.

Warning: If Baralai or another character grabs the black crystal, there will be grievous consequences for them. ]

That voice...

[He freezes in place and as much as he's trying to fight off the urge to take the black crystal, he's caught between finding a result and doing exactly what the voice is telling him to do. It's much like his study of Vegnagun. The closer he is to finding a solution, no matter the risks, the more drawn he is to know more.

He has questions. Lots of them and they all needed answers. He finds it hard to hold back but he hasn't moved either while he struggles with all the what-ifs and could-haves if he does or doesn't do something.]

What? Why?

[Good or evil, Baralai believes that he can do so much to help his team and the world by becoming a catalyst if he must.]

[Having not heard the voice, Link simply looks to his new companion with a worried stare. He himself had long held inner dialogue with the spirit of the Master Sword, but not knowing what it was that Baralai was speaking of left the Skyloftian curious and worried.

Taking a few steps towards the other gentleman, Link's grip on his sword loosens as he points the tip of the blade towards the ground.]

Something wrong? A voice, you said?

As someone who has had some encounters with a voice no one else hears save yourself, I think you should not do anything and come away from there at once.

[ granted, it was not Genesis himself who had a voice calling him from an unknown source, but he had seen the results of such a thing. he watched as a man that he held in high regard - yes, he was irritated and sore about some things, but Sephiroth was still a man to admire - fell into the ravings of a madman before starting a path of genocide. that he didn't get far wasn't the point; Genesis did not trust voices inside the head or sudden urges. ]

We should look at the other doors, as Ib has suggested.

[Baralai knows they're both right and he can't deny that there's a sense of intricate design behind the physical. He's keen on the fact that some things are just better left alone but in this case, he needs to know and the pull is even stronger now to test those boundaries.

He retracts his hand for a moment, but his eyes are still on the black crystal.]

Just a moment. I'll catch up to you in a little while.

[He opens his book to see if there are any texts written about it, even if the pages don't tell a literal translation. He can extrapolate the meaning through another way of thinking and that's through reading between the lines as if there is some hidden code that is waiting to be deciphered.]

B- but we're looking for some people right? What if they're in trouble?

[In truth that's only half the reason she wants to move on. That glowy crystal is creeping her out. And head voices are never a good thing.]

We should hurry up and find them. We can study things later, right?

[She hopes....]

[Link nods to Baralai as he finally makes his way out of the room, looking left and right to find his bearings. Traversing this warehouse seemed almost impossible without a compass or a map.]

Not sure if we'll have time to do that. Stay safe, Baralai. Don't do anything if it seems risky. We'll continue ahead and see if we can't find the others.

Stay close everyone. Let's keep moving.

[Baralai knows that he's the weakest link in the chain with fighters. If he can offer information even if it cost him physically, at least it's an answer they can use. He nods toward Link and looks to Ib.]

I'll be alright. I promise. You stay with them and be safe. I don't know how long I'll be, but I'll catch up.

[He offers his best smile with warm thoughts to keep her from worrying. If something were to happen to him, he didn't want anyone to see it.]

[Snow is uncomfortable with this, to say the very least. Even if that crystal didn't look evil as all hell, he still wouldn't have been okay with leaving a single person of their group alone in a place like this. Wasn't that how Jessie went missing in the first place?

He takes a few steps forward, wary of getting too close to the thing, but unwilling to back down. The previous comparison he made between the crystal and Chaos is still fresh in his mind.]

Yeah, you guys go on ahead. I'll stay behind with Baralai.

[ There is, of course, nothing in Baralai's book regarding the black crystal. ]

[The praetor inhaled deeply and slammed his book closed. He couldn't find anything and with his lips pursed, he looks to Snow and nods. If he's a witness, at the very least he can tell the story of what happens next.]

Right.

[He sets the book aside for now and steadies his nerves with his eyes closed.]

Please, stand back. I don't want the same thing to happen to you.

[If anything, he was ready to face the consequences of his actions for the sake of knowledge and he was willing to do so even if it cost him.]

Just...act as a witness.

[Sometimes to learn a thing is to be involved with a thing. It's just like Vegnagun all over again.]

[Snow takes a half a step back, but more out of shock than anything else.]

The same thing?

[He really doesn't like the sound of that. It sounds too similar to something he would've said, himself, not all that long ago. Something really bad is about to happen in this room... isn't it?]

Wait a minute. What do you think's going to happen to you here?

I don't really know.

[He kept his eyes on the crystal for several seconds while he thought it over. He turned to look at Snow from over his shoulder before he turned around fully to face him. Honor was a thing he knew very well and the answer isn't so simple.]

Worst case; I die. Best case, I survive and possibly lose my memory, or perhaps face insanity or physical injury. In either case, if it means a way out of this forsaken place, the risk was worth the sacrifice.

[As young as he is, he seems ready to take that chance.]

[There's a brief moment of panic on Snow's end, where the world stops and he forgets how to breathe. It hurts too much -- hits too close to home -- and he was in absolutely no mental condition to get blindsided with something like this.]

Goddamn it, no it's not!

[His voice is raised, sounding more like a scolding father than he probably means it to. He steps between Baralai and the crystal, trying to use as much of his massive physique as possible as a barrier.]

I'm not letting you do this. I don't care what the reason is. There are better ways than this.

Take it from someone who knows. You're not doing anyone any favors, here.

[And that's all he's going to say about that.]

[Baralai's own temper flares without realizing the consequences. He's resolute in his own mindset that he can't do anything more than just this.]

I CAN'T DO ANYTHING ELSE!

[He wasn't able to fight to protect anyone in his current job and that hurts him more than just simply throwing his life away. He has no family or friends here that would give a rat's ass about his life other than Yuna but she's in love with someone that's not him.]

If you have another suggestion, then let's hear it.

[Snow's voice and hackles are still raised. He doesn't even stop to think about how personal this might be for Baralai, or even consider the implications behind his words.]

How about knowing what the hell you're getting into before you do anything? You're supposed to be a Scholar, aren't you? What kind of Scholar throws himself to possible death without even knowing what will happen if he does?

[Hope. That's the obvious answer in Snow's head: Hope is that kind of scholar, that kind of researcher. He can't go through losing someone like that again. Even if Baralai's still practically a stranger and is nowhere near as close to him as Hope is, it's no different in Snow's eyes.

He lowers his voice, speaking slowly and evenly now in order to make sure that he's understood.] Your life is worth more than this.

[Snow is right but he can't give an answer he doesn't have. He takes in a deep breath to respond calmly which only makes him just that much more impatient.]

I tried to research it. I've looked at every possible option. I have thought of every scenario and the only thing I can go on is an assumption. There are no written accounts on this crystal. Logically, that suggests that it's either a hidden relic that is still undergoing research or it's a part of something else.

[He opens his eyes and recalls the voice. He can't stay upset when there are important matters to deal with.]

I heard a voice in my head telling me that it shouldn't be touched. If my hunch is correct, then it holds the key to something more. It's knowing how to access that knowledge is where our hands are tied. Now, you know as much as I do.

[He deliberately skips the part about how his life is important. To him, it's irrelevant to keep on that subjective point of view.]

[Nope. Sorry, Baralai, that's not good enough. Snow knows recklessness when he sees it. He can smell his own.]

You ever stop to think that maybe it was locked away in this room for a reason? Hell, look around you. This whole place is like a wasteland, and whatever did this is still here. That's how Jessie got taken in the first place.

[In the end, though, Snow knows he probably can't out-logic Baralai. Even with 500 years of politicking under his belt, it's still not his strongest suit, but that doesn't mean he won't try.]

If this thing was an experiment? It probably failed.

[His brow creases in thought. He's thinking about that very carefully and with the thought that some documentation must be around to explain it. He relents, for now, to Snow's assessment.]

We'll find Jesse first. She's our priority. Perhaps she can shed some light to this crystal. Along the way, I'll see if I can find some documents to further aid us in understanding what has happened here.

I'll note that the crystal is a variant of an unknown force and should we leave this place, we'll leave together. I would like to learn more of its origins and I certainly can't do that if I'm dead or if my memories are wiped.

[At least he's willing to try another alternative. He bends down to pick up his book and steps toward the door to exit the warehouse. To Baralai, the emotional impact isn't in admission but rather just something to consider.]

[Snow lets out a sigh in palpable relief. He hadn't expected that to work. Maybe he'd been projecting too much of himself from the get-go, but honestly, it didn't matter to him so long as Baralai was still alive and breathing. He follows after him, but only so far as the doorway.]

Sounds good. Let's tell the others to keep an eye out for things, too. Five people looking are more likely to find something than just one, right?

[Against his better judgement, he glances over his shoulder back at the crystal. He understands where Baralai was coming from, to an extent. The curiosity is already eating at him. There's something... magnetic about the crystal, and he can't help but wonder what the hell it is, either, or what would happen if one of them touched it. Fortunately, he's just stubborn enough to pull himself away from that kind of a trap, at least for now.]

[The pull is still tugging at him to go back to the crystal but the fact that he's needed alive for now is more important. He'll focus on the immediate needs first and information is a need he must have. He looks back toward Snow and creases his brow.]

Snow, thank you.

[The gratitude is a sincere one and he hopes it's enough to pull Snow out of what's pulling him back. He falls in step with Snow to leave the area.]

One set of eyes is fine but five are better, true.

[It's a lot like the Crimson Squad Selection Exercise in the Den of Woe. Something was in there that pulled people into killing each other and Baralai had enough sense to fight the force that nearly possessed him to kill his best friends. This is no different than back then.]

I suppose I lost myself a little. But I must ask, you said that you had experience in what just happened. Can you tell me what that was or is it none of my business?

[It seems that the crystal has opened the door for him to at least try to learn about the man that saved his sanity.]

[The honest display of gratitude is what pulls him out of his trance, more than anything else. Snow isn't used to being thanked, especially for something as small as this. At least, he thinks it's something small. Talking someone down from a potentially dangerous situation isn't exactly heroic in his book. It's what any normal person would've done in that situation. Isn't it?

Snow offers Baralai a sad smile. He wants to tell him -- really, he does. He's wanted to talk about it for a while now, but every time he tries, he just... can't. Whenever he tries, it's like the part of his brain that connects his thoughts to his voice doesn't work anymore, and he can't utter a single word about it.

Instead, he merely places his hand on his shoulder, as a friendly (and possibly even comforting) gesture.]

Maybe one day, buddy. Maybe one day.

[To Baralai, it was big. While he never discovers what the crystal really is, at the very least he's alive to say that he heard the voice. What that voice was and who spoke to him may never come to pass either, other than it sounds familiar and it acts as a warning.

The small gesture of comfort seems almost superficial but he can't claim that without knowing the man more. His eyes look toward the hand of the larger man with a watered down smile. He didn't want to be rude, it wasn't in his nature.]

I look forward to it.

[He nods and walks toward the door.]

We will find them. [another nod at Ib with a soft smile - Genesis found the idea of him being someone to look up a little odd but that was how it goes when the other two were not around - and followed after Link. ] Don't worry; they will be fine.

[ of course, that was if they did not trigger something with poking around something they did not understand. Genesis tucked away his apple-shaped crystal and fell into step, keeping an eye on Ib while they worked their way along the hall. even without Mako-enhanced senses, he was still a SOLDIER, and that meant being prepared. so when he heard footsteps behind them, he half turned, his Rapier drawn and pointing at Baralai. ]
