[Mutually taking each others' seemingly crazy statements seriously. That's it - that's the CR.]

That makes sense. So we probably can't change what's supposed to happen here, but we may be able to affect the small things.

Jack snaps his fingers and points at Chiaki. "Exactly. Man, if only every Time Agency training session went this easily." He shakes his head. "We're outsiders, here, but we are a part of the timeline. It might not be possible to paradox ourselves out of reality, but we can certainly have other large, unintended effects. The way we interact with this world is already weird enough. I don't wanna accidentally blow a hole in time, too."

Do you think winning a Triple Triad tournament set 28 years in the past would have any dangerous effects on the timeline?

[Because yeah, she already heard about that.]

At least one person here still has her priorities straight, and Jack breaks into a grin. "Absolutely not. Go kick their butts, show 'em who's best, you deserve it. After this week? Show them how the game is played."

It might not be as easy a win as last time. Triple Triad strategies may have changed over time. It's possible the players here could employ gambits I've never seen before and haven't had time to devise appropriate counters for. But that's what makes it exciting.

"Oh, I can understand that. We're not too far off-timed, but the most popular games, they're the ones where strategies have to change the quickest, right? And Triple Triad is definitely the most popular game in town. Still, you're too smart for them. I have confidence in you."

Yeah. The metagame changes really quickly for things like that. That's why it's important to constantly practice and retool your deck. The strategy I used to win the tournament in Hera has probably been thoroughly examined and countered by now. But I'm going to do my best here.

"But you're using strategies from the future, stuff that hasn't even been thought of yet. That means you've got an advantage, too. Your opponents won't have a clue what to expect out of you."

That's true. It might work out to an even match.

Jack frowns a little. "Before you run off, you were there, in the Research Facility, with the Crystal of Earth, right? I can't remember." He's got a question, but he needs to ask someone who was there.

No, I wasn't. All I did back then was win the Imperial Triple Triad tournament. I wasn't with either of the other groups.

"Crap. Good job on that, though, by the way." Jack scratches the back of his head. "Whatever Kalki's plan was, to get back here, she had to use the Crystal of Fire for it. Question still lingering is why couldn't she have just done this with the crystal she had? I've got ideas, but it'd be easier if I talked to someone who saw it happen."

Who's to say she couldn't? She might have just been waiting until now to show us all of this.

[personal profile] theendiswherewestartfrom 2015-08-06 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Jack snorts, and his voice tilts with sarcasm. "Oh, yeah, forgot about that. She's trying to show us something, some big lesson that needs to get passed down to us through all this, and then we magically see everything her way. Could she be more pretentious?"
line_piece: (investigate)

[personal profile] line_piece 2015-08-06 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
More information isn't necessarily a bad thing. She's condescending to us like she always does, but she's also giving us an opportunity to learn more and maybe change things. I'm sure she doesn't think we can, but that's all the more reason to try.

"I've seen a ploy like this before. Throw somebody through time, show them the future to send them into despair. Usually when the Doctor does it, it's to show you something wonderful, the other possibilities out there in the universe. Kalki? She's trying to get us to lose hope. Show us something horrible, the end of the world. Beat our heads against a wall with something she doesn't think we can change."
line_piece: (investigate)

[personal profile] line_piece 2015-08-07 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I think so too. Kalki's actions have always seemed like they're motivated by despair, or at least a desire to drive us into it.
