Fireworks
...Well, okay, slightly, but only in the sense that it prompts Ven to glance over curiously. Once there's a lapse in the noise, he calls over.]
Heh! What's that mean?
no subject
It's just something you say when the fireworks are really good! ...I think there's some sort of history to it, but I don't really know, hehheh.
[He pauses and turns back to the sky as another set of fireworks goes off. Manami shouts,]
Tamaya~! [Then to the boy he adds,] You can say 'tamaya', too.
no subject
[He considers that. When the next set of fireworks goes off a moment later, huge and impressive, Ven grins and gives it a try.]
Tamayaaa!
[And then, once it fades--]
Like that?
no subject
[It might be hard to tell in the dark, but Manami's expression falls a bit although he continues in the same relaxed voice,]
I enjoy summer fireworks. The mountains behind, reflecting the sound back- it's really powerful!
no subject
I'm used to the mountains being pretty quiet, actually. [When thunderstorms passed through the valleys, though? That was scary loud sometimes.] But you're right, it's nice -- it kinda sounds like the world itself is cheering, y'know?
[Or maybe those are just the cheesy kinds of thoughts you have when you're raised to believe that worlds are sort of sentient. Sort of.]
Is this how you watch fireworks in Japan? [This guy's homeworld, presumably??] Near the mountains like this?
no subject
Oh, we see them all over! By the ocean, on the river, in the mountains- everywhere is good! But I like the mountains the best! Everything about them is great!
[He turns to the other boy and smiles widely-] My name is Manami Sangaku. Sangaku means 'mountain peak'!
no subject
Heh, that's pretty fitting, then! I'm Ventus -- just Ven for short. It comes from a word for "wind." [Which he only knows because Aqua mentioned it to him once. It's one of the few things he manages to recall from early on in his recovery.
Outside of that, he's blind to Latin... and most languages, actually.] Nice to meet you, Manami!
no subject
[Manami scrambles closer to Ventus to come get a better look at him, his smile excited.]
Can you feel it all too? The wind, I mean? Heh- it doesn't quite sound so strange to say here, where people can use wind magic, does it. But you know, I can pay attention to the wind and know when it's coming. But no one else here seems to know how to do it.
no subject
Hm... I never thought of it that way, but -- sort of? Wind's my most advanced element when it comes to casting. That's... outside of this world, though. I can't use wind here with any of my jobs -- I can't really feel it, either. Not like normal. [He frowns a bit at the reminder.]
Normally, though... I can sense it when I control it -- my master did say I have a natural affinity for it. [Which is good, he's always figured, but he never really stopped to think about it -- the fact that he's better at wind spells than his fellow (more experienced) students, or how awkward it's been readjusting without that element, specifically.]
Somethin' like that, you mean?
no subject
There's no magic in my world, but if you work at something, you can get good at it, right? I got good at sensing the environment around me using all five of my senses.
[He looks at Ventus intently. Maybe he could learn how to sense the wind again, even though this world has taken his sense somehow.]
no subject
[That last bit is interesting, though. No magic... Funny, Ven never really thought of his senses as being tied into his magic ability before now -- he never thought too hard about it, basically -- but all things considered...]
Oh -- so -- you mean you taught yourself? How'd you do that without learning elemental magic?
no subject
You should try it! If you were good with wind once, I'm sure you can be again even without the magic.
[Manami flops out on the grassy hillside, looking up at the incredible starry sky that is still occasionally being lit up by fireworks. His voice becomes more calm and thoughtful than before.]
I can sense it all... All five of your senses can find it- heh, even taste. You can hear or see it coming through the trees and the grass of course, but even before that, there's more hints. The moisture in the air, the press of a rising wind, the cold and the heat. All you have to do is listen for a while; take it in for a while.
[ (No one ever said he's a good teacher...) ]
no subject
Then he also lies back, arms folded under his head like he's done a million times before, except that this time he's concentrating, trying to focus on the things Manami mentioned. He's still adjusting in some ways to having all of his senses so muted -- gaining them back during that whole memory fiasco, even just temporarily, really threw him off afterwards -- but either because of the clarity of the atmosphere, or the fact that he's slipped into Student Mode again, or that he has something familiar to focus on, or whatever else, the difference doesn't seem so bad now, or at least not as glaringly obvious.
So he meditates in silence for a time.]
...Heh. I guess I kind of took the little things for granted. Never thought I'd have to learn it over again like this.
no subject
He chuckles wryly at Ven's statement.]
Adults always say 'you'll appreciate it more if you have to work hard for it'. [Mmm. Well, maybe they're right. He supposes he appreciates being able to do this more now that he's met someone who was naturally always able to do it but lost it.]
Say, what jobs do you have that you aren't using wind magic?
no subject
Uh... Red Mage and Dragoon are my main ones. I have a couple others, but I haven't tried 'em yet -- Pirate, and those other two we got right before the fighting started. Engineer and something.
I haven't looked into getting anymore yet, though. I've just been getting the hang of the ones I have. [So some Jobs out there might have wind magic attached, huh...
...He has a bit of a one-track mind, if that's not obvious.]
no subject
New. Best. Friend.]I'm a Dragoon too! That and Illusionist. [Weird combo, right? haha.]
I feel the same though- I just want to be really good at what I have. It's like being only a climber instead of an all-rounder, you know? [ (He probably doesn't but Manami keeps on going anyway.) ]
Red Mage though? Don't they have wind magic? One of those magic jobs does, anyway. I had someone make a wind for me once. But you know, being able to know when the wind is coming is really good for Dragoon! Heh heh... I can get a bit of a burst from the wind when I 'jump'!
no subject
Oh, yeah? I haven't met many others with that Job so far! [Only... one other comes to mind, in fact, and that's only been mentioned in passing.
He shakes his head.] That's kinda the weird thing. Red Mage has three of the main elements -- fire, ice, and thunder. But it also has water, and that's... unusual? [Water and ice are treated as the same where he's from -- and with the exception of the Water spell, the rest match up to spells he already knew before now. W e i r d.] One of the more advanced mages might get more of 'em, though.
[And in that case... He probably should look into the Black Mage, maybe. Once the current fiasco is dealt with.
But that aside, he tilts his head curiously.]
Y'know... I never thought of trying to use wind like that! That'd be pretty handy. [And then he grins.] Well, hey -- if one of us learns some wind spells here, we should definitely work together! And I'd like to see what another Dragoon can do, besides!
[WE SHOULD BE TRAINING BUDDIES, NEW FRIEND]
no subject
it's saferfighting practice is more exciting that biking practice. The Dragoons need a society or something...)]
Right? Right? It'd be so convenient to have a wind whenever you needed it. [Wow, someone on the same wavelength as him!] I've been practicing with Kupandoru-san, but it would be fun to spar against another Dragoon! It's easier to show you what I mean than to talk about it anyway.
no subject
CLUBGUILD]Heh, all right! Whenever we get things straightened out and get back to the city, we'll start training!
[Normally he'd jump on it sooner than that, but. Recovering from a gunshot and all. (That falls under getting things straightened out, ok)]
It's a promise! Right?
[So let's survive until then also??]
no subject
[Manami grins and holds out his hand for a handshake.]
Right! Promise!
[He doesn't let himself think about the future too much, but at least that far, for sure they'll be all right. (Right?)]
